Just Breed:

I just started playing this for the first time, and wow, I am really impressed. The graphics are of course great (due to the MMC5 and creative layering of sprites), and the battle system is dead on as well. I enjoy how the characters attack in real-time, as opposed to switching to cut scenes like in the Fire Emblem or Shining Force series. It makes the whole system feel more fluid, and things play out much faster. The music is catchy too! The narrative is perhaps a bit weak, but for the era it does pretty well. Has anybody else played this? What were your thoughts? It does not seem that this one gets talked about too much, for whatever reason.

  • Yeah, it's really solid. I really liked the lack of cutscenes as well; it made battles go by a lot faster. If you enjoyed it and you're looking for other good SRPGs with translations for the Famicom, check out Famicom Wars, Dai-2-Ji Super Robot Taisen, and Fire Emblem Gaiden.

I'm currently playing through Kouryuu Densetsu Villgust Gaiden and it's pretty solid. The story is pretty much non-existant, but the Zelda 2 style battle system is a lot of fun. I also appreciate how linear it is for a Famicom/NES RPG. I just wish I could get weapons and armor for all my characters, and that when a character joined my party they didn't get destroyed in one shot by pretty much any enemy.
  • I've played Fire Emblem Gaiden some, but how were the stories in the others you mentioned? I'm playing FFVI at the moment as well, and it's leaving me wanting more from games in terms of narrative depth.
  • The gameplay is what drives Famicom Wars, but there isn't a whole heck of a lot of story. Super Robot Taisen has more story, most of which it feeds you in the intro using scrolling text, but it plays out in the traditional SRPG way - feeding you bit by bit at the end of each stage, but it's minimal. You won't get much more than you got with most old Fire Emblem games.

From what I've played, the SRPG that has the most story is Fire Emblem Awakening.
