Is Final Fantasy VI really better than Final Fantasy VII?

*All our my opinion and my opinion only.

WARNING: Has spoilers... you have been warned.

FF6 and FF7 are very similar in many ways. Both extremly steam-punky, and has this dark over looming feel to both of them. But the main argument between them is which is better. Many people state that even though FF7 is much more popular, and sold the most units out of any Final Fantasy game, people think of FF6 as the better, hidden gem, of the 16-bit era. But which is really better? Lets put our Chocobos, our materia, Kefka themed watches together, and recite One Winged Angel to decide which is better*. FF6 is a great game. Exellent actually. Best villain of all of Final Fantasy. So lets bring it up. Gameplay; I love the gameplay for that game. But is it really original? FF5 and FF4's gameplay is basically the same with FF6. So originalility for gameplay? Maybe not. Character devolopment is very good, but has a lot of characters that are hard to keep track of their story, devolpment, and characteristics. Villian? HELL YES! Kefka destroyed the world!!! How can you beat that?! The story of FF6 is a great one, with a controllive destructive government, and a great deal. My favorite character is Shadow... I love the option to save him from his death or not later in the game. Music.. exellent, but some pieces are lack to originality. But what about FF7? Personally FF7 is my favorite Final Fantasy game of all time so I might be a bit bias. Gameplay. I love the materia system and the new line of new addition to the franchise are all for good. Story, holy crap this game I think has the best story. Like FF6, FF7 has a terrible government, and a terrible villian named Sephiroth. Not as badass as Kefka, but it will do. Characters are minimal but great and in depth just like FF6. I love it when Cloud and Tifa travel into Cloud's conciousness near the end of the game, so unreveling, it's just beautiful. Music... I LOVE THIS MUSIC!!! Original, great, and dark, all 3 factors I love to have in a Video Game OST. And who can forget Aerith's death? So which is better.. for me it's FF7, but whats better? FF7 or FF6? Leave answers, questions, comments in the section below.

  • Yes Final Fantasy VI is better. More to follow later tonight ...
  • I've only ever played a handful of the Final Fantasy games, but the only one I ever thoroughly enjoyed was VII.
  • VI is my favorite mainly because it was the first game that really turned me on to RPGS when I was younger. But also because of all the greatness it has. I also don't think it's really a "Hidden Gem". Everyone knows about Final Fantasy III on snes. I could see maybe Illusion of Gaia, Soul Blazer or Tecmo Secret of the Stars being considered hidden gems but not Final Fantasy III. I love VII as well and I think i actually like Sephiroth more than Kefka. Xenogears is still my favorite RPG though!
  • Short answer: yes, FFVI is better, but it's by a very thin margin.
  • Clon guys your forgetting about the 7th saga, not the best by any means, but an extremely underrated RPG, and a personal favorite

But yes ff6 takes the cake!

Who could forget that pile of meh?
  • They both have to much drag in it, unlike my fave final fantasy, FFV.

Oh wait, but farris.. aww crap.

I like Final Fantasy ^ more than 7 by a little bit, because 6 allows better combots in combat. 7 actually removed some of the versility. But then again 6 lost some off of 5, hence 5 is the best. So says the statmonger.
  • I like 7 better than 6. I liked certain aspects of 6 more than 7, but I wish the main cast of characters was smaller, the story jumped around between the main characters too much for my liking, and the World of Ruin sucked.

I wouldn't consider either to be close to the "best of all time," though, just the "most popular of all time."

    Your a 9 fan huh?
  • V has a terribly boring story and completely forgettable characters. And the final boss is an evil tree? Just terrible. Gameplay wise yes it is pretty good, but in that case I'd rather just play FF Tactics.
  • VII makes me cry therefore it is better.
  • I enjoyed 7 more and I think it did more to further the genre and video games as a whole. Otherwise they're both really well-made games and just about equal in quality across the board. I'm not heavily invested in either game beyond that, I think there are other jrpgs that deserve more praise.
  • Mortal Kombat on Sega Genesis is the best video game ever!

I don't play RPGs for storylines much anymore;  I read books for storylines.  After all, how diffrent are all FF storys anyways?  The first 6 were getting into a hell of a rutt, it's kill off everyone when they least expect it (So you expect it all the time).  At least 7 didn't kill off anyone major, and 8 didn't pretend to kill of the lead or anything silly like that.

    ...

besides, to me, best RPG storyline is the diablo series, and hell, most people don't even know it has a story since the bulk of it's in the manual.  The bulk of J RPGs are too predictiable to me, it's like watching an m. night shamalamadingdong movie.  (*Of fucking course he's DEAD, he was SHOT at the beginging of the movie, and no one talked about it! you don't just show a guy being shot and not come back to it later! and no one talked to him except the kid! Ever!*)

Edit: Waaait, you bashed the boss being a TREE?

THERE IS A NAKED BLUE MAN EAR-FUCKING A LION!  Three more near nakend men all around a midget in a swim suit!  This isn't final fantasy, this of Cho Anki shit here.
  • I love both of them, but VI edges out VII to me.

    Shadow & Interceptor 4Lyfe

Lol! Naah, 7 is my favorite in the main series. 9 is alright, but it has too many annoying characters for my taste. Although, I think Hope in 13 is the most annoying character they've created to date.

  • True Story: I like 8 more than 6
  • Most definitely. VI is at or near the top of my list of my favorite games of all time. VII is a good game, but it just doesn't hold up well to me.

    Outo f the FF games I've played(I've played but not beaten 1, 2, 13) I'd go:

VI, IV, V, IX, VII, VIII, III, I, II, XIII, X.

I don't like XIII and X is awful. The placement of IV, V, and IX kinda fluctuate because I loved those three quite a bit. V was probably the most fun to play, despite a weaker story.

Got to be the first time I've ever heard it described as a hidden gem.

Lol, that's what I was sayin!
Must've been on that new fangled MetalJesusHiddenGemathon.com site or somethin.
  • VI is better. I'm sure I'll take flack, but I don't think VII has aged well.

Heh. I see what your saying. Maybe I caught myself too much in the FF7 Fab. But, most of my top picks are ACTUAL hidden gems (8 for example)

  • VI > Tactics > V > IV = VII

Even if Tactics is really a re-named Tactics Ogre game

I think VI's graphics have aged better, the music is better, the cast is better, the villian is better, the combat is much better paced and balanced (not counting the vanish glitch).   I mean who wants to sit and grind materia for hours so that they can cast Knights of the Round five million times?

The One Who Bares Fangs At God is one of the best freakin' songs i've every heard

  • I was very hyped when I played both of them and really enjoyed them, but as it stands now I've replayed FF6 a number of times and FF7 I don't think I've ever replayed it at all, maybe just once and I'm not really sure.

FF7 was beautiful graphically and some of the FMVs were jaw-dropping, and the materia system was fun, my major complaint is the story, I don't remember it making much sense, too many loose ends and overly complicated explanations unlike FF6 where the story is fairly simple but cool nonetheless, also character development in FF7 wasn't as good as in FF6, Cloud doesn't talk much if I remember correctly, it almost feels like he has no personality at all.

I played me the shit out of some FFT; it's the console game that has the closest feel to the goldbox games I love so much.  But with final fantasy in place of the D&D.

I generally use 2-3 knights, dual swords, with teleport.  Teleport is great because you can attack foes from behind with ease, and speed break is so under rated (And so fucking broken).  3 knights, dual swords, that's 6 tries to drop someones speed 2 points each, so max of 12.  Few monsters have 12 speed, so it's like a perm stop spell that no boss is immune to.

I always play telling myself I wont make a damned calculator, but I always break down cause it's just so much fun when you can nuke everything.
  • I am the very definition of a "casual" FF fan. Personally, FFVI is far and away my favorite, but as I've only played 4 total FF games in my life (1, 4, 6 and 7), maybe that invalidates my opinion.

Still, I've never been able to get into FFVII but I'll play FFIV or FFVI any day and prefer the latter for reasons too lengthy to go into at the moment.

Edit: Oh, and I do own Tactics and want to play it but am told I really need to set aside the proper amount of time and attention for it and that hasn't quite happened yet. It's in my queue, though.

    Cheers!

I'd say most of the game is broken after the first x number of hours.  Still tons of fun, even if you lay waste to everything with all your super powered knights
