When did SMB launch?

You'd think a seminal game like SMB for the NES would be fully recorded and archived but, as it seems, it's actual US release date is a bit of a mystery.

Neat read:

  • I've always been fascinated by this - personally, I've been a supporter of the October 18, 1985 release date that Frank Cifaldi champions because that's my birthday and it makes me feel...special and unique.
  • That article was great. Thanks for sharing!
  • I had a deluxe set early on and i dont remember SMB being available at launch, i think it was released shortly after which could have been the national launch but not the early release in NY and LA
  • Wow, very interesting read!

I always assumed it was October 18th, 1985.

In 1985, they didn't think the game would explode the way it did. NoA was also a much smaller operation back then.

  • Wasn't there employees that literally went around store to store trying to sell Nintendo products at the time? I wasn't around at the time but I would think that the distribution would have been a lot slower at the time but the game may have been ready for the NES release? Perhaps certain areas got it before others? Just some food for thought I really have no idea.
