How do you feel to beat super hard video games?

So last night, I played Castlevania 1 to win the game, and I beat it, I didn't feel too satisfied with the ending but it still felt nice to say "I beat Castlevania 1", the adrenaline going into the fight against Dracula is one I haven't felt with any video game in a long time since Mega Man 1

I beat Mega Man 1 after so much difficulty, and it felt awesome.

How do you feel to complete those near-impossible games like Mega Man, Castlevania, Battletoads, Super Mario Bros. 2, Ghost N' Goblins, etc?

Comments

  • Beat Ninja Gaiden a last weekend. Had that game since I was a kid so beating it felt surreal and kinda bittersweet.
  • Super Mario Bros 2? I didn't find that one to be extremely difficult. A little time consuming, but nothing crazy hard

Also, congratulations! Now beat the other Castlevania games!
  • In recent years, I've cleared Ninja Gaiden on the 3DS VC (thank you save states!) and both Castlevania and Mike Tyson's Punch-Out!! on the NES. Now those are feats I'm not about to repeat.
  • Congrats!

Can you do second quest? And after that, leather whip challenge?
  • Castlevania felt good to beat, so did battletoads I was jumping around like a fucking maniac haha.

Beat ninja gaiden last month and it felt great, immediately popped in number 2 and beat it in about an hour, don't know if the games easier than than the first or if I just played the shit out of one so two was much much easier.
  • Right there with you, Castlevania felt amazing to beat! Doesn't hurt that it's one of the best games ever to boot.

So a joyful, yet hard, playthrough.

I believe that Ninja Gaiden 2 is widely known for being the easiest of the three NES Ninja Gaiden titles.  Regardless though, it's a feat I don't think I've ever accomplished!  So congrats to you!

  • It feels awesome to beat a game that you find to be particularly difficult or one that's felt like a weight on your shoulders for many years. Admittedly I've never beaten Castlevania 1-4 yet I still enjoy them. I just find 1 & 3 to be too hard, 2 is just a mess though it is easier than 1 & 3, and 4 isn't too bad but I've made to Dracula but for whatever reason I cannot beat him.

I remember all the NES Mega Man games being my achille's heel but about 7 or 8 years ago I started with the original and worked my way up through Mega Man 5, still have no beaten 6, 7 or 8, not because I find them too hard but I just didn't dedicate enough time to them. But beating the original Mega Man was probably the hardest game I've beaten especially since I felt it was near impossible for years. I haven't replayed it since I beat it but I'm no longer intimidated by it.
  • I'll get back to you whenever I beat Holy Diver on Famicom.

I've beaten all of the games listed in the OP more than once.

That's a good way to describe the feeling.

On one hand, you feel pretty triumphant beating a game you've regarded as difficult for so long.

On the other hand, once you figure out the mechanics and what it takes to win, it sort of strips away the mystery and challenge in a way that can be unsatisfying.

(though I wouldn't regard Castlevania, Mega Man, or Mario 2, especially, as being anything close to "near impossible")
  • Castlevania's not that hard IMO. Sure there are frustrating parts but as long as you have holy water it's not too hard. It's all about the subweapons. I used to play it badly and get my ass kicked until I learned how to use those.
  • It's one of the best feelings ever! Dracula's Curse was really the one that got me super stoked when I finally completed it.

These games take so much freakin' patience, that when you finally beat them...

I'm on the last portion of Ninja Gaiden (keep getting caught in 6-1 loop/dying at boss), Battletoads (currently working through the Terra Tubes), and the last section of Silver Surfer. I plan on completing those bastards soon enough! The feeling after beating those is going to be incredible
  • I usually yell out a profanity and then throw the controller softly in excitement....take the cartridge out, look at it, put it back on the shelf and then look for a few more seconds and acknowledge what I had just done and nod respectfully.
  • I was pretty stoked first time I beat Castlevaina 1, now my excitement raises from attempting no death runs may try no damage eventually.
  • Im usually sweating, and shaking when I'm about to beat something really difficult from all the adrenaline lol. When I beat GnG, Ninja Gaiden, TMNT and Silver Surfer I think I was just SO elated I couldn't even yell or anything. I think it's exactly how when James beats Batman on Mike & James Monday, that sort of of silent, disbelieving, excitement. The one thing I do find is that I'm totally incapable of turning the game off hahaha. I usually just leave that End screen up on the TV for a while until I calm down enough to put that chapter of my gaming life away...like I don't want it to end

Kick Jaquio's ass dude!! I can't stand that jerk lol. I just finished going through that gauntlet a couple months ago. Definitely learn to do the quick slash techinque on the controller, it helps tremendously with the first and third forms of the final boss. I also feel you on Silver Surfer, just finished that one a couple weeks ago and it's definitely top 5 pain in the ass on the NES. I'm about to start in on Battletoads soon. I swear these games are taking years off my life lol

  • I beat ninja gaiden and double

Dragon for the first time. Felt awesome! I screamed lol

I was just telling Toxie how after you play Battletoads for a while and get decently far, games like Ninja Gaiden, Zelda II, and Silver Surfer seem much, much easier. Zelda II almost feels like a bit of a joke to me; I've made it to the 6th Palace in under a week's time, lol.

Ninja Gaiden is on deck after I beat Zelda II, then it's another crack at Silver Surfer. I see myself finally completing Battletoads in early 2016.

Congrats on Silver Surfer, dude! How long did that take you total (if you even kept track), if you don't mind me asking? What was the hardest part towards the end for you?

Thanks man The hardest part for me was the first section of the Magik Domain. The checkpoints are setup in places where  it's just impossible to get your powerups back if you die. I watched a few playthroughs on Youtube to help me come up with the best routes to not get killed, but it's still a huge pain. It took me about 3 n a half days to beat the game (I think I game overed like 15-20 times before I finally beat it). Obviously the biggest key is to keep full powerups. My strat was to start with the Lizard level, since that's the easiest and you can come out of there fully powered up. Then I immediately went to the Mephisto level cuz I think that's the hardest of the 5 base stages. I figured since Im more likely to die there than anywhere else, Id rather not spend all my time running the easier stages before possibly getting owned on that stage. Also I found this to be another stage where powerups are hard to recoup if you die at certain checkpoints (unlike in any of the other worlds) so it was a big time saver doing it this way.

Hahaha 2016 seems so close yet so far! I'm getting started on learning that game this weekend. Any pointers you can give me on Battletoads? Do you use any of the warps, or do you just play through without em? I've been studying Bootsy's strats on Youtube, but any other tips you could throw my way would be awesome

Thanks for the tips with Silver Sufer; I like the the order you did the stages in.
    • As for Battletoads, the first thing you need to do is make sure you have a very responsive controlller!
    • The secret to mastering the Turbo Tunnel is TO NOT PUSH ANY BUTTONS WHEN HITTING THE RAMPS! Literally, take your thumbs off ALL the buttons.
    • I only use warps when I'm stuck on a particular level, and I want to spend time working on it.
    • The game starts to get incredibly fulfilling once you overcome difficult portions, and start playing straight through all the levels.
    • Use the 5 Toad Code (hold DOWN+A+B then push START at menu screen) to get in more practice.
    • I'm at Terra Tubes now, where I'm stuck lol.
  • I felt like sobbing in joy after beating Double Dragon III. ^^

NostalgicMachine: Battletoads is so tough you can use warps or 5 Toad Code and not be called a cheater.

Oh there's going to be a goddamn celebration when I finish Battletoads, sir lol. The BT thread will be blowing up with pics, and I'll probably make a separate thread where I rant for several paragraphs about the experience

Let me know when you get started!
  • Congrats on finishing Castlevania! Took me a really long time, too. I have to admit, I didn't beat the original CV until after I played the multiplayer Harmony of Despair, and played the DLC stage of CV 1. That was when Dracula's pattern "clicked" with me. So I went back and made my way through the NES game finally.

Just completing it is only the beginning. You haven't truly beat it until you do it without getting a game over.

Then you can try beating it without dying, beating it without using any magic and beating it "pacificist" where you don't use any items and only kill the bosses.

I like the Lost Levels version SO MUCH BETTER than the USA version.

Really? I never liked the Holy Water that much, the Stopwatch however is my true friend in the game.

While the stopwatch has its moments, nothing comes close to a III Holy Water in the later stages, especially against bosses, who are mostly immune to the stopwatch. The fact that it stops enemies is a lifesaver. Plus using it near a fire-spitting statue can make you get a lot of points if you hit the fireballs, which could be useful for extra lives (Every 30000 points). Points/Extra Lives are underrated IMO.
