Why didn't the Genesis get a Gradius game?

Wouldn't that be cool if the Genesis had a Gradius game? The SNES and Genesis both had Contra, Castlevania, TMNT, Sunset Riders, Sparkster, Zombies Ate My Neighbors. Sega didn't get a Gradius game though. It's strange that this was pretty much the only main konami series not on Genesis. Gradius 3 probably would have ran better on Genesis without the unbearable slowdown of the snes version.

  • I don't know, for those of us with sub-par gaming skills, especially when taking shmups into account, the slowdown makes Gradius III palatable. Also, I think that the Genesis library has quite a few very good shmups even without Gradius making an appearance:

    Air Elemental Blast

    Gaiares

    Hellfire

    Truxton

    Whip Rush

    Just to name a few.

But I do wonder too why it didn't show up on there given the history of the other franchises making their respective appearances, both in ports and new games too.

Great point. Even if Gradius III was on the Genesis, it would be overshadowed by the plethora of other (better) shooters.

  • Gradius 1 and 2 were available on the Sega Saturn in Japan as part of the Gradius Deluxe Pack. The Salamander games also had a pack. Not the Genesis, but they did make their way onto a Sega console. They were also available for Windows and the Playstation.
  • Its okay it has Thunder Force........

Edit - Thunder Force III and IV are some of the best shumps I have ever played.

You need to get out there more
    Kidding, those are great games!

I think it's nice the SNES has a few of its own shmups the Genesis didn't get. The system has like 80+, let the SNES have a few.to call it's own!

Oh totally......Thunder Force are easily the best though... way better than Gradius anyway.

Yeah definitely. I'm not huge on Side Scrolling Shooters. Prefer Vertical
  • Although it's a good series, I honestly never cared a whole lot for the Gradius games compared to the much more light-hearted (but still challenging) Parodius offshoots. I am more shocked, given how every console at the time had it, that a port of the very first Parodius did not exist for the MegaDrive. Saturn had them, but I still would've liked to have been able to see it running on the MD nonetheless.
  • Gradius Gaiden and Gradius V are better than any shump on the Genesis, by far.
  • I also always thought Thunder Force, any of them, were overrated. Technical achievement for the fourth, but regardless were not my cup of tea. Gaiares I agree is a good one though. One of the earliest Genesis games I owned.

Correct! Thunder Force IV, aka "Lightening (lol) Force" is my personal fave shmup on the Genesis. The OST is amazing.

You know, I love Parodius AND the Genesis but I suppose it kinda makes sense that there was never a MD Parodius. Parodius was by and large made just for the Japanese market, and since the Mega Drive was a distant distant second to the Super Famicom over there, they probably just didn't want to take the time or money. At least with other Konami games they could sell it to both Japan and the States and do pretty well, but I don't think Parodius would have ever made it here, at least not in those days.

This does remind me that I need to get around to playing the ones on Saturn, though...

  • Air Buster, Gaiares and the Thunderforce series were all excellent games in my book.
