Hardest NES game you can beat?

  • These are some of the hardest NES games I've beaten:

Burai Figher (on highest difficulty level which is Ultimate)

Double Dragon 1 + 3 (most people will say the third part is the hardest but I'd more trouble with the original)

    Mike Tyson's Punch-Out!!

    Ninja Gaiden 3

    Snake Rattle 'N Roll

    TMNT

Track & Field II (with a standard controller)

I've also beaten the Castlevania, Contra, Mega Man and Zelda games but don't find these as hard as the games that I've mentioned above.

Actually I guess if the Mega Man games are in there, I'll throw in Mega Man 1-6, though I think 1 was the hardest. MM2 feels really easy now even on the difficult setting, but that's probably because I've played it a billion times. Same for Mega Man 3. It was probably really hard at one point but I can still breeze through it nowadays.

Today, when I try to play TMNT2, it seems ridiculously hard for a few reasons. One being that the hit detection on the enemies seems to have large "post-hit" windows. Basically, if I stand toe-to-toe with a foot soldier, I can count on every second attack missing. Of course, during this invincibility window, the enemy can retaliate and get in a free hit on you. So, to compensate, I find that you have to "hit, retreat, hit, retreat". This works most of the time but it feels so clunky and not very beat-'em-up like. Mashing the special attack can give some relief to this but it does get exhausting after a while.

The second issue is that, once you lose your lives, you go back to the start of the stage. This makes single player a real problem, especially combined with those hit detection issues that can sometimes cheaply tear down your life bar.

For whatever reason, I don't recall having that much of a problem with this game as a kid, though maybe that was because a) rose-tinted glasses and b) we probably played 2-player most of the time.

I find that TMNT3 feels like a proper evolution of the franchise in all the best ways. The graphics are excellent and the game play has been tightened up in every way. I think it's my favorite beat-'em-up on the NES, actually.

TMNT3 is the better game but IMO a lot more challenging too. I've yet to beat it.

  • Just finished Legend of Zelda (first quest) and feeling good! Level 9 itself was a real slog for me but I was rather surprised how relatively quickly Ganon went down. Still felt good to watch him reduced to red ash, though. I'm going to take a bit of a break and work on some other games before I go back for the second quest, but I definitely will be. Really enjoyed my time with that game and seeing the upper levels that I'd never seen until now.

Moving on to Zelda II! I'm excited to be returning to it, as I used to own it as a kid but haven't played it since then.

Congrats, bro! LoZ is a true masterpiece of gaming

I'm playing through Zelda II for the first time in over a decade (I don't recall ever actually beating it), and it's a LOT easier than I remember/most people make it out to be. I've been playing for about a week now, and I'm on the 6th Palace. Level 7 everything, and I didn't even use all the Crystals yet either!

Keep me posted on your progress! We got a Zelda II thread going
  • The hardest NES games I did beat back in the day are TMNT and Ninja Gaiden 1. I can still whoop up on Ninja Gaiden whenever I want, I don't think I play anything as well as I do that. TMNT tries my patience and I haven't beaten it for 10ish years. Ghosts and Goblins is one of the hard classics I feel I MUST beat to be a legit NES playing fan. That's just my own personal thing. Also, I never use save states ever(or emulators for that matter,) never ever never, that's not beating the game IMO.
  • Well after some persistence late last night I was able to beat ghosts and goblins, both loops in about an hour and 15 minutes. I find the more I have been playing it the more I like it. On loop 1 I was able to get to level 5 before having to continue. Of course level 6 on both loops was the hardest part of the game. I was in so much shock that I almost forgot to take a photo of the end screen.

Unlike the OP I don't feel burned out by the game and would like to play more to see if I can get through the 6th level easier.

Now that I have that tough game under my belt, I'll be trying another one.

SERIOUS AND EPIC CONGRATS ON THIS, SIR!

I'm on the final section of Zelda II, myself. Hoping to finish it this week!

Well, holy sh*t! You have my respect, bro! Congrats! I'll be getting back around to another serious attempt at that game later. I do feel proud that every play session gets me a little further but I still have to prepare myself the bad mood that game puts on me.
  • I finally beat "Ninja Gaiden II" without having to continue the other day. I'm still better at the first game.

"Ninja Gaiden III" is coming in the mail.
  • Good luck on NG III. I found 2 was easier than 1 but still haven't beaten the third yet.
  • One thing that makes "Ninja Gaiden II" a bit harder for me is the final boss run. It's not that bad, but I have trouble beating them without weapons, especially the second form. I have to die and go back with a weapon. Whereas I've practiced the first game enough so that I can beat the final bosses with just my sword.
  • Ninja Gaiden II is the hardest of the series, make no mistake. I'm not counting the credit feeders grinding away for hours with hundreds of deaths until they "beat" the game with a score thats been reset dozens of times.
  • Off the top of my head I'd say either Ninja Gaiden 1 (I've beaten the other 2 as well) and 3D Worldrunner.

It's amusing how generous NGII is with points. By the end of my run I had over 900,000 and I wasn't exactly aiming for a high score. My typical NG run is a third of that.
  • I played NG II right after I beat the first one. Maybe my reflexes were heightened but I found the second one easier. Especially when you have the power up for the shadow ninja. Still tough but easier than 1&3 in my opinion.

It's a mixed bag in terms of difficulty compared to the first game. It's harder in some ways such as the ice and water making it harder to control. But it's more forgiving in other ways.

That's a good way to put it.. Agree
  • Well now that I've beaten Ghosts n' Goblins I am working to see how good I can get at the game. Today I spent some time trying to get as far as I possibly could before I got my 1st game over. I beat the first loop and made it all the way to the end of level 5. Satan took me out and that lead to my first game over screen. I am going to try again and hope to beat it on one credit. This time I played I struggled with the 5th level. After playing 6 over and over I have a good strategy going into it and I've played that level probably the most and now can go through it with little difficulty. Heck tonight I only needed one play at level 6 on the first loop and made it through. One key point for me is knowing where the armor upgrades are hidden in each level that way if you need it you can grab it before facing the boss.
  • Hardest game I've ever beaten on the NES had to be Friday the 13th. A lot of folks have told me that so long as you stick to a sequence of events the game becomes much easier to play. My only gripe was fighting Jason. Trying to dodge him felt like a crapshoot and even with the knife he still managed to almost wipe out poor George. Outside of that the game took about half an hour to beat. I'm glad I gave this one another try.
  • Hardest game i can beat.....Mario's early years fun with numbers probably
  • Hardest NES game that I can beat? Taboo: The Sixth Sense ofcourse. That game is hard as hell. I can't even plug it into the NES without wondering if I can make it through this time around.

But in all seriousness, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles. Beat it only once with all Turtles alive. Some pretty hard stuffs.
  • Unlicensed, but Dudes with Attitude is the hardest NES game I've beaten. I don't think I could beat it again. Or at least, I don't want to try.
  • As of last evening, Zelda II!

  • Lolo 2 so far, my list of nes accomplishments isn't great
  • I know earlier in the conversation some people were saying if you didn't complete the game without seeing game over it wasn't officially 'beaten' so I wanted to challenge myself on that and try to beat GnG both loops on 1 credit. I was able to do it today.

Still the one level I struggle with is the randomness of level 5, especially loop 2. I'm talking mostly in the beginning with those ghosts and little blue demons. I was able to beat level 6 both times no damage on the first try. I had only 1 death on the first loop and it was in the shifting platforms in level 4... being impatient. On loop 2 I died a few times at level 5 but I had earned over 200,000 points so I earned a few extra guys during the adventure.

I still find the GNG game fun and still pretty challenging.... not enough to pull my hair out but a good challenge.

What should be the next tough game I try to beat for the 1st time?

    Ninja Gaiden III

    Castlevania III

    Super GNG

    Metroid

Or if you guys have any other reccomendations?... If I have it I will give it a go.

You should try to 1cc "Batman". I consider this one of the tougher games to beat without a game over because you _have_ to do it with three lives. No extra lives ever. And it's a tough game to begin with. I've only ever beaten it by abusing continues.

Now that's what I'm talking about.  Welcome to the 1cc club!

I agree that would be a major challenge. I'm going to have to give it a try this weekend. I really enjoy the Batman game and I've beaten it twice.

Castlevania 3, dude! Congrats on your persistence.

Still on Act 6 of Ninja Gaiden, myself.
  • Ninja Gaiden stage 6 is tricky... takes some real persistence to make it through with little to no damage

I did just play castlevania 3 again for a little but didn't get very far. That's definitely on my list to beat
