Just beat Metroid

Weird that I never beat this game before, since it's one of my favorites. I beat it as a kid with the Justin Bailey code but never legit. So I sat down a couple days ago and committed to beating this from beginning to end at long last. The hardest part is definitely the mapping & finding the secrets. I still had to give up a couple times and look at an online map, such as to get the suit and the wave beam. First boss is pretty easy. Second boss is a little harder but I just unleashed all my missiles on him and he went down. Last level is fairly easy, but I had to pull far back in my memory on how to do it; but they are generous in remembering which brain-gate thingies you destroyed so you don't have to destroy them again. So it's just a matter of collecting more missiles once you run out.

Overall, a great game, I would give it 9/10. Especially considering it was one of the first releases after the black-box launch titles. My only complaint is that some of the secrets you must get are a bit *too* cryptic, pretty much requiring you to get Nintendo Power or whatever. But that was the standard back then with games like this and Zelda.

  • EPIC congrats; this game is NO JOKE on your first time through.

I think I've only beaten it MAYBE once legit. It's definitely one I need to solidify from my "must beat" list. Congrats!

    What's next?
  • I had Metriod as a kid, but I never beat it from start to finish until a few years ago. Great job!
  • I beat it with the Player's Guide map, but I kinda wish I had gone in completely blank. It was definitely one of my favorites.
  • I applaude thee

Yeah I always got lost as a kid and either gave up or just used the code to go to the end LOL

Next are either the SNES games in my sig which I didn't fully beat yet, or else maybe TMNT on NES which I never beat either.

  • Congrats man!

I am ashamed to admit that I've never beaten the game either. I seem to be terrible at finishing games because Super Metroid has also alluded me.

One of these days I keep telling myself, one of these days...
  • I still need to do that. I've also only done it the Justin Bailey way as well. Maybe that'll be my first task on the AVS?

Damned glad for that too.  When I beat it this year I forgot all about that, and also forgot the best place to farm missles and energy back up is by killing metroids; they're actually easy to kill and drop a ton of life\missles.

How'd you like the slowdown in the motherbrain area?  That part always fucks me over so bad, it's the closest thing to being frustrated in a game that I get.  I end up saying fuck it, I'm just gonna mash fire and jump around like a jack ass till one of us dies.

Side note, since you get 150 missels from killing the two bosses, the bulk of the stuff can be bypassed in the game. And the paths to the bosses is generally "Follow the right side of the map to the bottom".

Yeah, killing the metroids gives you plenty of life, but they are more generous with the life than the missiles, and since it takes missiles to kill them, I ran out a couple of times. On my last run, where I only needed to kill 1 gate and the mother brain, I farmed up to 36 missiles up top, then went in and got up to 96 missiles from killing and then stopped killing them after that because I didn't want less. Probably way more than I needed.

Slowdown doesn't really bother me in NES games. I find it makes things easier. But I had done the mother brain part before and the old instincts kicked in so that part wasn't a problem. I stand where the destroyed gate was in front of the brain and shoot missiles, and drop down to the right when the bullets come.

Yeah, after I killed the bosses, I didn't pick anything else up (except the ice beam - I remembered I would need that to freeze the metroids), although I know there are missiles and energy packs that I didn't find. I had 5 max energy and something like 260 max missiles going into the end. Like you said, life isn't really a problem because you can get it fast from killing the metroids.

  • Never beat it either. It is maddeningly confusing. No landmarks. Very frustrating.

    Damn, Super Metroid.

I owned the SFC version a year ago(or something like that) saved right before the final corridor

to Motherbrain, forgot about it and sold it a few months later
  • I actually beat Zero Mission in August. Does that count?

After playing and beating Zero Mission, I am not sure I could go back to the original, but I may force myself in the next few years. As a sidenote, I played Zero Mission on my GameBoy Player for GameCube and loved the fact that I could play the game on the big screen!
