Just ordered the first game to relive some great times and wanted to know if there was a widely preferred one out of all of them? I'm pretty biased as I played the first one way more out of any of them.
The first is always the most nostalgic for me with the second coming close. I think the Underground games were very well received and much larger than the first few.
1 and 2 for me, I was never able to get into Underground or American Wasteland. I picked up Project 8 a few days ago at the thrift shop and I am very interested in giving it a shot.

P8 was okay, I feel like since AW came out before it that it went...backward I guess in graphic options, it's still okay, a fun game forsure!
I love all up through THUG2, would probably prefer 3 or 4 though. 1 can't be the best though as it has the worst level by far in the entire series....Minneapolis!

Come on, bruh. Which game besides sports games and the Rampage series ever had a MN level? The secret tape on the roof was at least cool...

I know, as a total homer it kills me to say it, but that level is horrible.
I started on thps 4 so that one is the most nostalgic. I like that they got rid of the time limit in the levels. I played through thug 1 and 2 and thaw but going back I still like 4 the best.
Although ea skate destroyed Tony hawk, liked those better for sure.
I'll be the one to say it just to say it, sure by the time it came out we'd all played the damn games so many times that the novelty was gone, but in my opinion Tony Hawk Pro Skater 2x, the Xbox exclusive, was the best Tony Hawk. I got that game on Christmas 2001 and in my opinion it was the definitive Tony Hawk game. For me, THPS2 was heartbreaking, for whatever reason my Dreamcast would never read that game no matter how many copies (probably 7-10 at this point) I've tried.

I agree with 2X for the original xbox. It's even better with a PS2 controller adapter since the xbox controllers weren't that good.
2 is my fav, and 2X on the original X-Box is an awesome remake. I bought it and played it about a month ago, the graphics aren't bad at all considering I was playing on a 360. It's 1 and 2 plus some extra levels.

I hated the undergound games. Just bored me to death.
Ride, Shred, and Motion were utter crap.
I haven't played 5 yet, but it looks more like underground than the pro skater series, so I'm not too excited for it.
My favorite was actually American Wasteland
EDIT: I should give my reasoning. I like the openworld almost sandbox type of gameplay and also the addition of the BMX in the open world as well!
THPS 1-3 were awesome. It's hard to pick one of them over the others. I liked the style and the number of objectives to complete in a time frame.

What didn't you care for in Underground?
Pro Skater 4 for the PS1 has the most nostalgia for me so that would be my vote.
You must mean PS2, right? I never played 4 so I would go with THPS3. I also liked Project 8 but I'm not sure if anyone else did or not.

Holy crap; I thought the series stopped at 2 on PS1. My bad!

Skateboarding is one genre of video game that was improved by the leap to 3D. Old 2D skateboarding games seem archaic.
After 4, which was really just more of 3 but not as groundbreaking, the formula went off the rails.
Although, the Underground games were not bad. They just had a lot of unnecessary fluff and were a classic case of style over substance.
All the other games have pretty much sucked balls. Exept Project 8, which was actually pretty decent.
4 perfected the formula. Or at least got rid of the damn timer, while still having some inspired levels (something that went downhill real fast)
