Kids and gaming
My daughter is almost two years old now and I am starting to think about when she might be able to play some games. I know many of you have younger kids so I am wondering how old your kids were when you got them started and what games? I have a pico with a bunch of games and thinking about starting with that, but don't know if there would be something better.

He likes War of Monsters and Hulk Ultimate Destruction for the PS2.
My 4 year old likes to play Destroy All Humans, Tony Hawk, and Harry Potter Quidditch Cup for the PS2
My 8 year old mostly just plays Minecraft and Roblox.
They both also play Pinball Arcade on PS4. The 2 year old doesn't quite have the grasp of launching the ball, but he does well with the Goin Nuts table since it auto_launches.
I bought a Pico this summer off of eBay for her with the thought to give it to her for Xmas. My wife, however, thinks we should wait unitil she turns 3 next summer. Either way, once they start getting a bit older, they are going to have to put some time in on the Atari 2600 and the NES before they are allowed to play 16 bit on their own. Gotta learn about the origins! I may even torture them with my Atari Pong unit...
Today, they're both pretty decent at games, especially racing games, which are our favorite kind to play together. One is certainly more of an addict than the other and I have to stay on top of him to make sure he understands what is expected of him to earn the privelage to play. I've found it effective to give him a set time-limit each day.
Ever read that? Pretty interesting.
My daughter has been watching me play for all of her four years. She likes to watch me play more than she likes to play herself. Getting really sick of playing Little Nemo...
Could be worse. She could prefer the Barbie games, or Athena

If they can't read on their own when you cut them loose on the 2600, at least read them the instructions and keep a few games away from them at first. Like that damned Indiana jones game.

Perhaps start with Space Invaders and Circus Atari?

Space Invaders? You're mean.
I'd probably start them off with Combat and Air Sea Battle.

Him beating spelunky raises more of an eyebrow to me. Considering his dad's job and lack of videos showing him playing, seems like a PR stunt to me. Or the standard parent bragging about how great their kid is when they're streaching the hell out of what really happened.

The article said he beat Zelda alone (totally do-able) but the phrase "we finished..." suggests that the kid and dad worked on contra together.

Tagging along and doing nothing while someone else beats the game solo shouldn't count. I beat turtles in time with my wife because she did good wasn't just me crushing.

Count for what? It's not a tournement. Just a dude writing about gaming with his kid on his personal blog.

Yeah, that's what I was thinking. Shouldn't really be a discussion of what "counts". Haha, the article was more just an interesting take on the introduction of video games chonologically to a child. Interesting concept, regardless.
Sure, it wouldn't be cool if he was blatantly lying about it all, but this is the internet and maybe he's trolling us all. If you want to believe that, go ahead.
I thought it was a pretty cool concept. I told my friends with kids I could help them out by supplying some systems, haha.
