I've Finally Beaten Zelda II!

So, last night, right before I had to head out, I completed Zelda II! I've been playing this game since 1996, and I've never buckled down and beaten it completely. That all changed earlier this month when a thread on here caught my eye, and got me interested in giving it a shot.

Needless to say, I personally found the most trying section to be the path to the Grand Palace. It's a gauntlet of classic NES proportions. If they didn't start you off at the Grand Palace when you game over, IDK if the outcome would have been the same.

Also, Thunderbird was hilariously easy for me; I just used Thunder, Reflect, and Shield, and kicked his ass. I made a quick username tag, as I wasn't prepared to complete it when I did, and the lighting in my office is horrible:

Thank you! It was definitely an adrenaline rush. I just kept going down and right in the Grand Palace, and unknowlingly reached Thunder Bird, lol. I highly suggest hanging in there and completing this gem if anyone hasn't already! Knock if off the list and feel awesome for conquering this cult classic!
  • Congratulations. It's one of the games I beat back when it came out, but who knows now if I could still do it. I think one of the challenges of NES games is as you get older is can you muster up the drive to complete something challenging from when you were younger. Of course time to do it is a factor. Glad to see after nineteen years you persevered. Im the same, every time I see a thread about completing a game, I want to go and and give it a try.
  • This is a good game and really misappreciated. people seem to give a flack for not being a top-down overhead style like the other Zeldas, but at the time it was released, its not like that was a trend. I don't think it's any more obtuse than the original Zelda as far as where you need to go next, and it's tough but it's definitely beatable. Congrats.
  • sooooo...

Did you duck in the corner and hide from shadow link like a little girl, or face him head on like a man?

... cause last time I played it I didn't know about the duck in the corner stuff so he kicked my ass.
  • Congrats on beating it. I just played through this again for the first time in over a decade and my appreciation for it has skyrocketed. It really is a great title.
  • Well done. Always great to conquer something you've been working hard on.

This was my first thought after reading OP's accomplishment as well. Curious minds need to know!

  • Grats. one of my favorite Zelda games ever. Beat it a few times as a kid. Never as an adult. Hrmm. Might need to do that now.......
  • I ended up beating this in the early 90's at some point -- it's definitely a very hard game. By the end Link has a very diverse move-set and the combat was outstanding. The songs still get stuck in my head from time to time.

Attempted him head on and lost a life in the process, and then said "screw this", and refused to risk the last life and did the age old trick. Getting that far was enough of a challenge for me, lol.

I didn't collect a single extra life at all during the entire game, either.

Now that this one's complete, I'm going back to complete Ninja Gaiden.
  • I'll never forget the day I beat this game. Its satisfying to finish because the last palace is an ORDEAL.
  • Congrats, man! I felt a similarly heightened sense of closure when I finally powered through. Quite an excellent game, if a bit frustrating in places.
  • Way to go! Reminds me that I need to get back to that one myself
  • Congrats I remember beating this game as a kid and the hardest part was getting past Death Mountain and after that I was good.

What really sucked is I got this game early like Dec 1988 before the rom chip shortage. So I was literally the only person I knew who had it so I had no help from anyone on how to beat it. I still have that same cart to this day.

I think the game lets you play new game + with all your levels making it super easy.
  • This is the next game on my list of things the beat. Have owned it for decades, and never made much headway. Time to change all of that.

I had Zelda II as a kid and I didn't finally beat it until last year, so I know the feeling. Congratulations!

  • Sweet! Congrats dude! I've gotta put in the work to finish this game sometime in this lifetime lol
  • Nice goin' bud... I have to go back to this one sometime soon.
  • So, what boss would you say is the hardest, besides shadow link. I've always thought the boss of the 5th palace, boss Gomma or whoever (Spikes on his back) was the hardest boss. Thunderbird and the dragon are next.
  • Congratulations! This was one of the first games I remember beating on the NES. It was a tough but very rewarding experience.
  • Congrats! Despite the hate this game gets I love it.

I did Zelda 1 last year again for the first time in years and intended on moving onto Zelda II.... then my basement flooded. It is the first game I want to get back into when I get my game room set back up.

I found Thunderbird to be ridiculously difficult. It took me about seven hours of continuous gameplay at the Final Palace(since I didn't want to go through the gauntlet again) to finally defeat him.

    Congratulations!

That's nuts, dude! Did you cast Reflect and Shield? He hit me once, and I kicked his ass, lol.

I won't lie; none of the bosses stood out to me. I read after that everyone has trouble with the chain-mace bully (5th Palace I think?), but all I did was use Jump to clear his swings, and hit him on the way down. I think he hit me twice.

The Dragon wasn't hard, just tedious in regards to trying not to fall into the lava. He didn't hit me a single time.

Thunderbird was a joke for me. He hit me once, but I used Reflect and Shield and kicked his ass on my very first shot. Same with Dark Link, who killed me once (because I tried to legit fight him), then said screw it and just did the duck+attack trick because I didn't feel like starting over, lol.

I used Shield, but didn't think to use Reflect for some reason.

This is something I've noticed about the series overall. In the modern/3D games, many bosses are awesome, but other parts are tedious. The earlier games rarely really wow me with boss battles, but they feel more cohesive to me. Fewer standout parts in overall better games.

I'd pretty much agree, with one exception:

    Then after him, you fight...

    A blue\green pig bunny.

    <insert purple ganon joke here>

I'm in the same boat that none of the bosses from Zelda II felt very interesting or satisfying to fight. Even most boss battles from the original LoZ weren't overly interesting or challenging, save the hydras.

Link to the Past had a couple of neat boss battles, like the one where you need to crack the helmet with the hammer or the Fire/Ice hydra.

But my favorite boss battle from any Zelda game (the one's that I've played)? The final battle from Link's Awakening! Just played all the way through that game for the first time ever recently and that fight immediately stood out as one of the absolute highlights of the Zelda franchise for me. Seriously...the whole franchise! It was the right combination of challenging and creative.
  • Well, I do like the boss battles. They just don't stand head and shoulders above much of the rest of the game like they did later on. Maybe they are a little less exciting, but I'm saying the rest is very good, which I find disputable for most later entries. In a line graph showing fun, I would draw 3D Zeldas with peaks at the boss battles, and 2D Zeldas as a mostly straight line consistently near the height of those peaks.

I should point out, THIS IS YOUR FAULT!

If you didn't notice, that tileset was level 1.  Yes, I beat level 1 with a level 4 attack, primed to bump it to level 5,  I was mostly messing around with the route, was going to try to beat death mountian before getting the candle, but there's no way.  I did pick up the life spell though.  Then got spanked killing bubbles.

This is all I'm going to play this run though, was mostly testing out the new toy, it's a christmas present for my brother-in-law.  It's going to be a very used one once I'm done configuring it and "testing" it.
