I've Finally Beaten Zelda II!
So, last night, right before I had to head out, I completed Zelda II! I've been playing this game since 1996, and I've never buckled down and beaten it completely. That all changed earlier this month when a thread on here caught my eye, and got me interested in giving it a shot.
Needless to say, I personally found the most trying section to be the path to the Grand Palace. It's a gauntlet of classic NES proportions. If they didn't start you off at the Grand Palace when you game over, IDK if the outcome would have been the same.
Also, Thunderbird was hilariously easy for me; I just used Thunder, Reflect, and Shield, and kicked his ass. I made a quick username tag, as I wasn't prepared to complete it when I did, and the lighting in my office is horrible:

Congrats! It's on my list as well to complete.
Thank you! It was definitely an adrenaline rush. I just kept going down and right in the Grand Palace, and unknowlingly reached Thunder Bird, lol. I highly suggest hanging in there and completing this gem if anyone hasn't already! Knock if off the list and feel awesome for conquering this cult classic!
Did you duck in the corner and hide from shadow link like a little girl, or face him head on like a man?
... cause last time I played it I didn't know about the duck in the corner stuff so he kicked my ass.
sooooo...

This was my first thought after reading OP's accomplishment as well. Curious minds need to know!

Attempted him head on and lost a life in the process, and then said "screw this", and refused to risk the last life and did the age old trick. Getting that far was enough of a challenge for me, lol.
I didn't collect a single extra life at all during the entire game, either.
Now that this one's complete, I'm going back to complete Ninja Gaiden.
What really sucked is I got this game early like Dec 1988 before the rom chip shortage. So I was literally the only person I knew who had it so I had no help from anyone on how to beat it. I still have that same cart to this day.
I think the game lets you play new game + with all your levels making it super easy.

I had Zelda II as a kid and I didn't finally beat it until last year, so I know the feeling. Congratulations!
I did Zelda 1 last year again for the first time in years and intended on moving onto Zelda II.... then my basement flooded. It is the first game I want to get back into when I get my game room set back up.

I found Thunderbird to be ridiculously difficult. It took me about seven hours of continuous gameplay at the Final Palace(since I didn't want to go through the gauntlet again) to finally defeat him.
Congratulations!

That's nuts, dude! Did you cast Reflect and Shield? He hit me once, and I kicked his ass, lol.
So, what boss would you say is the hardest, besides shadow link. I've always thought the boss of the 5th palace, boss Gomma or whoever (Spikes on his back) was the hardest boss. Thunderbird and the dragon are next.
I won't lie; none of the bosses stood out to me. I read after that everyone has trouble with the chain-mace bully (5th Palace I think?), but all I did was use Jump to clear his swings, and hit him on the way down. I think he hit me twice.
The Dragon wasn't hard, just tedious in regards to trying not to fall into the lava. He didn't hit me a single time.
Thunderbird was a joke for me. He hit me once, but I used Reflect and Shield and kicked his ass on my very first shot. Same with Dark Link, who killed me once (because I tried to legit fight him), then said screw it and just did the duck+attack trick because I didn't feel like starting over, lol.

I used Shield, but didn't think to use Reflect for some reason.

This is something I've noticed about the series overall. In the modern/3D games, many bosses are awesome, but other parts are tedious. The earlier games rarely really wow me with boss battles, but they feel more cohesive to me. Fewer standout parts in overall better games.

I'd pretty much agree, with one exception:
Then after him, you fight...
A blue\green pig bunny.
<insert purple ganon joke here>

I'm in the same boat that none of the bosses from Zelda II felt very interesting or satisfying to fight. Even most boss battles from the original LoZ weren't overly interesting or challenging, save the hydras.
Link to the Past had a couple of neat boss battles, like the one where you need to crack the helmet with the hammer or the Fire/Ice hydra.
But my favorite boss battle from any Zelda game (the one's that I've played)? The final battle from Link's Awakening! Just played all the way through that game for the first time ever recently and that fight immediately stood out as one of the absolute highlights of the Zelda franchise for me. Seriously...the whole franchise! It was the right combination of challenging and creative.

I should point out, THIS IS YOUR FAULT!
If you didn't notice, that tileset was level 1. Yes, I beat level 1 with a level 4 attack, primed to bump it to level 5, I was mostly messing around with the route, was going to try to beat death mountian before getting the candle, but there's no way. I did pick up the life spell though. Then got spanked killing bubbles.
This is all I'm going to play this run though, was mostly testing out the new toy, it's a christmas present for my brother-in-law. It's going to be a very used one once I'm done configuring it and "testing" it.
