Wii U - Best Local Co-op Games

Hey there,

I've got a bunch of kids, and the oldest boys (6 and 4) tend to torture each other 24/7, so I'm hoping I can inspire some comradery by getting a few great local multiplayer games for the Wii U that force them to work together. At first, I was thinking about games like Smash and Mario Kart, but i realized those are both head to head competitive games, and I'm sure they will inspire more than a few brotherly beatdowns.

When we were kids, me and my friends played tons of great co-op games that forced us to work together, including Contra, Battle Toads, Bubble Bobble, Chip n' Dale's Rescue Rangers TMNT II, just to name a few.

Is there anything like that nowadays?

  • Hyrule Warriors has a co-op mode. No split screen, one person on the TV and one on the gamepad.
  • That's another thing - the gamepad. They are going to kill each other over that. I'm thinking about getting two pro controllers and just putting the gamepad away.

I'm probably over-playing how much of a hard time they give each other, I just really want to create a cool experience for them that will bring them closer together.

    Thanks for the suggestion!
  • The New Super Mario Bros U is excellent for play with kids, 3D World is great but it's a bit much since it's 3D, Wooly World is fun, Contra Rebirth from the Wii eshop is awesome, Rayman Legends is cool but a bit frantic. The Marios and Rayman are at least 4 player so the whole family can join. This comes from first hand kid tested ages 4-8.

Nice. Thanks, I'll check them out.

I kinda figured the retro re-issues on the e-shup will be the way to go.

  • Pikmin 3 has some good co-op missions, though the main game is single person.  We also enjoyed the co-op mode of the Zelda game in Nintendo Land.
  • Rayman Legends has an asynchronous co-op mode. One player controls Rayman while the other helps with the gamepad to move platforms, etc. Affordable Space Adventures is an eshop game where up to three players control different parts of the same ship (engines, navigation, & weapons IIRC).
  • A hidden gem that my boys love (ages 5 and 8) is Tank Tank Tank!!!

They can take funny pictures of their faces and put it above the tanks and play co-op or vs.

It is also a fun party game.
  • Kirby and the rainbow curse and Yoshi woolly world I think were the best imo as far as co op goes
  • Zak and wiki is a good one for co op
  • Going to throw in a second recommendation for Yoshi's Wooly World and, if we're going for the Wii, Kirby's Return to Dream Land
