I Have a 360, Do I Need an OG Xbox?

For some reason, I'm finding a lot of Xbox stuff lately, especially wireless Logitech controllers. Obviously 360 is backwards compatible, and runs games @ 720p via HDMI. I guess the only reason I see owning an Xbox is to softmod it and run emulators. Are there any other reasons to have a Xbox when you have a 360?

  • not all games are backwards compatible. thats why i keep my original
  • I would get an OG Xbox for the reason stated above: not everything is BC. One of my fav compilations from Tecmo does not work on the 360, unfortunately, so things like that and some other games keeps me from getting rid of the original XBox.
  • I only have an Xbox 360 and, up until now, every OG Xbox game I have has worked with the 360. I recently picked up TimeSplitters 2, popped it in and got a non-compatible message. I'm pretty bummed about it... If you're going to be playing a lot of OG Xbox games, you're probably going to need an OG Xbox. I really wish that Microsoft had gone the extra mile and made all Xbox games backwards compatible with the 360, but that's just not the case. You can stick with the 360 if you only have a handful of BC titles you want to play.
  • One of my favorites on original xbox NFS Underground is not backwards compatible and NFSU2 struggles to run on the 360. So I guess it's up to what games you're wanting to play. OG xboxes are cheap enough so there's not a lot of harm in having one.
  • XBox 360 BC emulation leaves a lot to be desired. Unfixed bugs, frame rate drops, etc. Even Halo 1 has unresolved console crashing bugs and that's the MS flagship franchise. IMO original XBoxes are cheap enough that if you have more than a passing interest in XBox games, grab a console.
  • And Xbox sucks as an emu box. Much better setups with better guis
  • Lots of people think that the 360 is fully compatible right out the box which isn't true. The main requirement is that you HAVE to a XBOX 360 HDD of any size. It can be any type for their respectable models, but it can not be the internal 4 GB, not an external thumbdrive or memory card, but the actual HDD for the 360s.

As jacob mentioned above, not all games are 100% compatible either. Here's two links to help anyone if they're in search on playing some original XB games on the 360. The Microsoft Xbox link is mostly good for mobile devices, and the wikipedia link is good on info about region and compatibility issues.

  • Lots of B/C games on the 360 don't look or feel right, and a lot of the library still isn't compatible (and won't ever be). That said, it's well worth having an OG XBOX--even more so if you soft mod it.
  • I am a huge fan of softmodding the OG Xbox. It's one of my most played systems in my house. Even if you don't softmod, there are several amazing games for the OG that aren't BC on 360, namely X-Men Legends 2 and Timesplitters Future Perfect being 2 big ones. Some games are wonky on 360, even if they are compatible. Star Wars KoTOR 2 has weird audio glitches all over the place.
  • I have an unmodded OG XBox along with an X360 Elite. There are many games I own that don't work on the 360.

Just from the top of my head, Toe Jam and Earl 3 doesn't work, Taito Legends doesn't work, Psychonauts has weird miscolorings, and if you own Ninja Gaiden Black, the main game works. However Ninja Gaiden Trilogy is included and that won't play except on an OG.
  • Can anybody link an easy to follow guide on how to softmod the XBox?
  • There's literally thousands but the softmodding holy grail used to be loading a hacked savegame on a splinter cell or 007: agent under fire copy - I believe the easiest way was using an installer by krayzee or something called ndure. Other than the exploitable game, you will also need a memory cart that either plugs into your controller, or you can buy an adapter that plugs into any controller port (which is simply usb) that'll allow you to use any fatx formatted memory stick (for which you need software that iirc only runs on win XP). Of course you can also cut up the controller cable and a usb extension cable, or you can solder a usb port directly onto the xbox motherboard/controller port itself.

But personally I always prefered flashing the bios on

I obviously haven't done it yet, but this tutorial looks promising.

  • Thanks guys
  • Yeah I need to mod mine too. Also from what I remember even games that are "supported" by the backwards compatibility there are a ton with glitches. Backwards compatibility was like a shitty afterthought they never invested much time of effort into. Plus the 360 dashboard is a fucking nightmare now. I love the simplicity of the original Xbox, and the systems are so cheap there's no reason not to get one. I do recommend getting a nice wireless controller though. I'm using a Pelican brand that's surprisingly good quality.
  • Some of the best XBox games like Chronicles of Riddick and Psi Ops aren't backwards-compatible, which is tragic.

The entire Chronicles of Riddick Escape from Butcher Bay game can be played on 360 and PS3 anyway. They included the entire game--HD-updated even--with Chronicles of Riddick: Assault on Dark Athena.

Really? How did this escape me? I never bought Dark Athena after several folks I trust said it was a huge disappointment. But Hell, I'd buy it if it meant I could play Butcher Bay again.

    Still no Psi Ops, though.

Most people don't seem to know this. It's even hard to find info about it, but here ya go -- http://www.gamefaqs.com/ps3/939613-the-chronicles-of-riddick-assault-on-dark-athena/answers/138345-remade-version-of-butcher-bay

  • TimeSplitters 2 and Future Perfect aren't 360 compatible either, all the more reason to get an original Xbox.

I bought a Logitech wireless controller and receiver for $4 at a thrift store, but it was full of battery corrosion. I've cleaned it all out but don't have a system to test it on. My local pawn has had a system for a month with another wireless Logitech for $40 (I could get it for $30). I figure thats a good price. I would just have to get the softmod equipment and should be good to go.

Anything on that list is playable on a 360. If you have any games not listed, you'll need an original Xbox to play them.
  • When the Xbox 360 first launched (I got mine on launch day after preordering nearly a year previously) we were promised that the 360 would eventually be fully backwards compatible. I sold my Xbox within the week. Long story short, I haven't played Crazy Taxi 3 in 10 years.
  • another reason to get the original is some of the old games only feel right with the original xbox controller. i remember in fable using the black and white buttons was crucial imo. when they remastered and rereleased it on 360 casting spells never felt right again. they destroyed the mage path in that game for me which was always my go to choice.

also if your a big mammoth american man the duke is a very comfortable controller.

and you can listen to modern music while revisiting vice city and san andreas. as far as i know that was never put in any other versions.

    and rollercoaster tycoon....
  • The OG Xbox just felt a lot more durable and rugged. I've striped down and modded mine lots of times, and I don't worry too much about hurting anything. My first OG Xbox(a launch-day box at that) had seen some crazy disasters and worked solid up until I traded it for a 360. It survived several years in an apartment populated with hard-partying bachelors(messes, spillages, and worse) and never slowed down.

The 360 just feels so fragile. I know it's all just circuits in a plastic box either way, but after all of the horror stories of RRoD, and having a 360 die on me already, I'm actually scared to try modding it. That, and 360's are still kind of pricey, since they're still a supported system. If I screw something up on a OG box, I can replace it quick and easy.

I forgot about the custom soundtrack support. That was a cool feature.

There is a sequel on 360 with better graphics.
