The Oregon Trail

So as some of you know, I am working on a little project inspired by The Oregon Trail. It is different in many ways, but it clearly pays homage to the classic of yesteryear. The original means many things to many people, so let's hear it. What did/do you like about it? What do/did you dislike about it? What memories or stories do you have that are associated with it? What has to stay in a new interpretation of the core idea? Which versions did you play, and what stood out to you about them? Any and all thoughts are welcome, you never know what might be useful .

  • As long as you can die from dysentery, I'm in!
  • I love Oregon Trail. The game is just a classic but I look forward to this revamp
  • Oh, I always named half my characters the names of my best friends, like Jaxson, and the other half something incendiary to my 4th grade mind like "buttface." Without fail, Jaxson would drown in a river crossing or die from dysentery, and buttface would make it to Oregon. Every. Freaking. Time.
  • Who could forget the rapid-fire muzzle loaders, and spending all your bullets on a hunting outing that could feed a city, yet you could only take 600 lbs of it with you on the wagon!
  • I liked having to shoot my own food.

600?!?  It was always 100lbs in the version I played.
  • I played this a lot in elementary school computer classes, as I'm sure a lot of people my age did. Then in college, I would bring my laptop to classes I didn't have to pay attention to and play there. I'd name the family after my friends and send screenshots to people, either of the family or when they died. Usually good for a laugh just due to everyone's fond memories of the game.

The elements of the game I think of right away are the graphics (which I believe loaded from top to bottom), entering names of your crew, selecting your loadout with a limited supply of cash (depending on your difficulty), crossing the river, and HUNTING.

The hunting was just so fun haha. I don't know why!
  • I can't think of anything that I would prefer be left out. Buying supplies, crossing rivers, hunting, weather, people/animals dying, gravestones, choosing your rations and pace...

    I played this version

I haven't played the game since 5th grade, so my memory of the specific weights is not to be trusted

  • I played the original as well as Oregon Trail Deluxe, Oregon Trail II, Oregon Trail 3rd and 4th editions. I probably played Deluxe, II, and 3rd edition the most. It's fun to pick who you're going to start as...banker, blacksmith, doctor, etc... and then see which variables throw you for a loop along the way.

I picked up a used Wii version of Oregon Trail and it's actually just as good as the rest. It has nice enhanced visuals but the same basic concept. Is there a little redundancy? Sure but it's still a good time killer!
  • I grabbed this game in the computer lab in school when ever I could since everyone grabbed it first (That, and Carmen Santiago)

Favorite thing was just putting all your friends or favorite cartoon characters names on there and set off to an adventure. However, it was kinda sad when one of your friends die. haha
  • The best part to me was hunting and seeing how much meat I *couldn't* take back with me.
  • I love everything about that game. A true classic.

    Here is my memory:

I hacked the game, I just really wanted to be right!

  • Can't remember many details as I only played it when i was a kid, but I loved the game. We had a computer in one of our classes, and if you behaved and did certain things you could earn time using it. All my time was spent on the Oregon Trail, and I was always on my best behavior when it was an award. I eventually got it for our home PC, and stayed up late many times playing it.
  • haha, found this when looking for images.  You should probably add zombies

  • I never really played it. We never had it in school.

I did play a hacked Great Giana Systers in school though, to make them more Mario-like

There is an oregon trail spin off called Organ Trail.  I have it on steam and it is basically an updated oregon trail but with zombies and instead of a covered wagon you are traveling in a station wagon.  It's alot of fun.
  • Playing this game years later, it's not really as hard as I remembered. has anyone ever actually waited for the Indian guide?
  • I thought this was the original NA Oregon Trail thread....then I saw how many posts this thread has.

Here's to ya Beau! Hope yours gets done a little sooner than "That other guys"

I contacted those folks at one point to ask if they'd be interested in a NES port, but didn't get a response. Sadly, no zombies, but there will be an arcade mini-game instead. Something to fill the place of the hunting, so if anyone has any suggestions for a classic styled arcade game that would be a good distraction while traveling west, let me know.

This time it'll be your kids, spouse, and dog, still not sure how that is going to go over...

  • I used to play it in school on those old ass Apple IIs. Never made any headway in the game, just went hunting and killed everything I could lol.
  • Gotta be like the original, nobody makes it out alive
  • Did anyone else ever play (or even know about) the earlier version of this?  I played the same version in school that everyone always talks about, but also owned this earlier version at one point when we had an Apple II machine at home.  I rarely see anyone talk about this version, and info about it on the Internet is very slim compared to the later version.

The travel screen was just your wagon blinking along a line drawn on a map.  The hunting screen just had animals run across the screen (with 2 frames of animation, I believe), and you pressed a button to shoot at it.  Your bullet moved from the bottom center of the screen, and you just timed it so the animal and bullet would meet in the center.
