Stumped?
A few weeks ago, there was a thread about favourite games that you haven't beaten (yet).
Somewhere, here: http://nintendoage.com/forum/messageview.cfm?catid=31&threadid=154604.
The game I had been struggling with was R-Type III, specifically the very last segment of the final boss. My previous attempt, some months ago really, had ended in terrible frustration and defeat, but thinking about it again made we want to play and I was resolved to finish it this time. Tonight I got down the cart and played through the game, and after a few passes against the boss I finally found that sweet vulnerable moment. Last time, I had gotten stuck in the last stretch, where if you don't act quickly you can't act at all. After landing that single blow, my ship escaped and the game wrapped up, then launching into the more difficult second round. Even the small enemies shoot at you then! You can imagine my triumph and relief, and now I have more to look forward to the next time I feel like playing this great game.
Have you been stuck before, when it seems like there's absolutely nothing you can do to proceed? How did you get through it, and was it simpler or more complicated than first imagined?

A boy and his blob left me scratching my head as a kid, and it looks like I wasnt alone.

Yep. When the original Resident Evil came out, I played it obsessively. When I finally got to the last boss, I was woefully underequipped with not nearly enough ammo to beat the boss. This wouldn't be such a kick in the ass if it weren't for the fact that my last save state in the game restarted me in this scenario time and time again, with nowhere to backtrack and collect ammo from. I eventually just had to admit defeat, and never went back to it. It still stings to this day, 20 years later.
The solution: I was supposed to trigger dialog with one of the NPCs (who I had already spoken to and seemed to offer me nothing) 3 more times before she would finally trigger the event that advances the story and opens up the rest of the level.
I hate that kind of B.S.
I was stumped by the third act in "Ninja Gaiden III". Now that I finally have the cartridge and playing it on real hardware, I can make it to the final act with 9 lives via the extra lives trick at the act of act 6. You'll need at least nine lives for act 7. This stage is so hard. There is this one jump that I'm struggling with where you have to jump onto a moving platform while avoiding these electrical things, kill a flying robotic insect, and land on a narrow platform with an enemy on it. The game rewards you with a 1UP at that part, but I often screw up without getting it, and then die. It's so aggravating.
I've never made much progress in "R-Type III" but I'm terrible at shmups and I've only ever played it in emulation.

If you can hold onto the fire wheel powerup you get at the beginning of 7-1 the last stage is a breeze.
The second loop is a lot harder than the first.

I also beat R-Type III this year. The final boss was definitely super frustrating until you have those eureka moments and figure out how to trivialize him
Super Ghouls n Ghosts - it took me all night and the next morning to clear the second run of level 7. Damn those bosses! Thank god you can 1-shot the Red Arramer with your bracelet if he's about 1 pixel away.
Shin Megami Tensei Devil Survivor Overclocked - it took me at least a week to beat Metatron (had to get the right alignment of skills). Spam him with Holy Dance, while some ultra resilient party commands all the attention of the spawns
Shin Megami Tensei IV - it took me at least a month to beat Beezelbub (had to get the right alignment of skills). I don't recall exactly what finally worked, but I think it was some sort of mass heal and cure (which took some online help and a shit-ton of grinding to acquire) + shit-tons of gun attacks. And luck.
Advance Wars - the final missions against Sturm and Eagle took me at least a dozen tries each to perfect the strategy
Total Annihilation Core Contingency - it took at least a dozen tries (lasting up to an hour each) to take down Krogoth Encounter. I tried to do it again last year and failed. I basically had to abuse saves in order to successfully get up all the defenses against air, land, artillery, nukes, and Krogoth. I will maintain that this is the craziest mission in RTS history. The intensity if two of those bastards attack back-to-back, the first one's detonation blowing away a chunk of defense, and the 2nd one trying to make a bee-line through the destruction.... unrivaled

Sounds like it's time for another playthrough, this is one I've been meaning to play too. The second loop on Super Ghouls and Ghosts was another frustrating moment for me, the stupid ring is the worst weapon! Also, the colour-swapped version of the stage four boss from your video frightened me off, pegboy.

I used to be able to breeze through both runs using the crossbow. Can't do it now. Taking on the last area with the ring weapon is the hardest part for sure.
Keep in mind I rented this game, I didn't own it.
I didn't even know it was a "hammer" that I needed, I just knew I couldn't progress and the enemies seemed too tough.
I had to get a magazine (Nintendo Power or something) that finally told me that indeed I needed the hammer and it was in that cave.
After a lot of perseverance, I finally got that stupid hammer. Then it took me a few more rentals before I beat the game.
It seems ridiculous now that I couldn't get the hammer yet I could beat all the rest of the game without much trouble (until I got to the Firebird), but it's victories like that that made the NES fun.
