  • My thoughts are that's it's a heavily stripped down version of Mario Power Tennis on the Gamecube. Really disappointed.
  • i feel that its a glossed up but feature stripped version of mario tennis 64. no power ups (Sans Mushroom) and no tournament..... its got great control and its fun, but not for more than an hour or two.
  • I had a buddy over and we just had a blast! I am a huge fan. I didn't try the mega game that just looks dumb. I played simple style online and it worked great. they when he came over we played 8 matches of standard with the chance shots. Gotta say I think that is just awesome we had a blast!

There is not a lot you can do with a tennis game, it is tennis. I would've been happy with just hd Mario tennis but the chance shots and jump smash adds a lot. I will be playing this online now all day if anyone wants to team up

Mario Power Tennis broke the boundrary of being a mere "tennis" game.

It had a funny cooky story with Wario, Waluigi, and Bowser. There were different courts that were actually different and had new mechanics that affected the way you played. Each character had their own identity with their awesome Power Shot techniques.....in this game's it's a merely a copy/paste with different weight values. There were tons of Tennis minigames that were legitimately fun like the paint and chain-chomp one. If I wanted a play a regular tennis game I'd go play Wii Sports. The only edge this new game has is better graphics and online play.

I feel like Nintendo isn't even trying anymore with their spinoffs, and with this game it felt like they rushed Camelot for a Holiday release.

Agree with everything you said. They've been half-assing almost everything lately, because they're putting 90% of their resources into NX development. It's a shame because no matter what kind of game they make they're almost always quality. But this year saw a lot of really watered down games like Mario party 10, Mario Tennis: Ultra Smash, Animal Crossing: Amiibo Festival, Chibi-Robo! Zip Lash, and Animal Crossing: Happy Home Designer. I think this is the first year in a very long time, if ever, where i noticed a significant dip in quality in titles from Nintendo. The NX better be awesome because they're seriously sacrificing everything they've got with the Wii U for it. At the very least, they better put out a stellar Zelda on Wii U to close it off on a good note.

ok just stopped playing this game after 5.5 hours.  Love it!   havent lost yet online in about 12 matches.  they reward you for beating harder players by giving you more points.

Full disclosure i never played mario power tennis that sounds pretty cool but i never went into this looking for something new.  I went into this looking for a fun ass mario tennis game for wii u with hd graphics and online play.  I never really played mario tennis for 64 single player, this game is meant to be played with friends and online imo.  when my friend was over earlier we had a blast playing the new standard mode with chance shots and jump slams.  Lots of ohhhhhhh ahhhh and hitting each other and swearing.

Couple of notes after a 5 hours of play

: hard as hell to get a service ace.  I used to ace people all the time in mario 64 and i have 1 ace all day.

:  it is much easier now playing a local friend when you are on the top of the screen.  Mario 64 it was such an advantage to be on the bottom side

: Wish there were more characters to unlock

:  This is the first game i have actually enjoyed the use of amiibo

    Mike,

I hear ya on mario party 10 being a little rushed and weak.  The animal crossing games and chobi robi dobi whatever the hell that game is i  have no interest in so ill take your word for it.  However i think it is a stretch to say they are working on nx all day every day.  Zelda is for sure getting a wii u release, star fox looks awesome to me and who knows what else next year.  I thought the last year nintendo has been knocking it out of the park with games but i do agree mario party 10 needs updates!

  • Good to hear that it's really fun, in an arcade-style tennis sort of way. That's the type of tennis game I want.
  • I'm gonna wait for this one to drop in price or buy it used. No rush to play it, especially with picking up a new PS4. I'm just really disappointed it wasn't Mario Golf. I really want an HD Mario Golf game and they have always been fun.
  • Oh man 8 hours later......gotta take a break love it. If you beat someone in a close match and they are ranked lower than you u drop.....kinda weird but it appears the more you win by the more you move up and if you beat a higher ranked player you move up a lot

Simple game but fun as all hell!

Also lots of cool new courts sand, ice, a bounce court that has arrrows and whichever arrow it hits it shoots the ball a different direction. Taunting server increases shot speed on return but you have to get the taunt in before the serve
  • I read that you cant team up with a partner friend or face a friend online. Its random chance online play. If so that absolutely blows, and is a total disaster imo.

This game has no real 1 player modes. No tournaments. No good mini games, the same basic gameplay of mario tennis 3DS with nothing new really added except a smash shot. The court is changed but the stadium is the same. The cutscene mega mushroom would be annoying and take you out of the game. To actually have fun, Id have to go to simple tennis mode but then there isnt anything to do. So bare bones. So dissapointed. Waiting for this used or a buy 1 get 1 type deal. Ive bought a ton of games new and loved them. This one is the real first let down to me.

Yep it is true dammer. Still great game imo wouldve been much better. Holding out hope for update but not likely. Played online doubles with a friend still pretty cool. I dont get it though.....im not a computer guy but how much more work would it be to make this happen???? Wtf seems like not much

splatoon didnt have it at first, and was later updated.

  • Good point. Hope so. Simple play actually is really good for a while then sucks . Some characters i.e. Toddette are too damn fast to do anything against if they know what they are doing. The standard play is all i have been playing. Need smash shots and chance shots to make playable

In terms of worth it was def worth it for me. I put 10 hours in today. Having more friends comeover tomorrrow to play all day. I had more time and fun in this game in one weekend then some other games in a lifetime. Ill easily have 25-30 hours of gameplay plus only 50 bucks instead of 60

Not saying the game isn't fun. I'm sure it is. If it were $20 or $30 I might even pick it up.its just a shame that, visuals aside, the game is a step down from the others. Mario Power Tennis is really great, offers fun minigames, tournament mode and whatnot. I played the crap out of Power Tennis back then. If Ultra Smash is not fun in single player mode that's a bad thing for me as that's all I play. I've heard the AI is terrible. Again I'm sure it is fun, I've heard the core mechanics of it are great, but the game is very lacking in features and modes. But it should've been priced accordingly. They marketed Captain Toad as a budget game and marked it at $40 but that's a game I would've gladly paid $60 for since it never felt cheap or that they held back when making it. Glad you're enjoying it though!

  • ...dlc joke...no? :/
  • Ha got it! Well the only game wii u has dlc for money is mk8 and that was well worth it and a bargain at that those tracks were amazing and the original game was worth 60 bones all day.

I guess they charged for some dumb shit in smash like costumes and ryu but i didnt bite. If they do an update my money is on free like splatoon and mario maker etc
  • I agree with u fasho! Love my Wii U an constantly stick up for it! Definitely an advocate, play it more than Xbone or PS4 thought PS4 is a close second this generation, specially wif Fallout 4!

Xenoblade x is my most anticipated game righ meow.. wI'll pick up tennis shortly...
  • Tried it, it felt like the most lacklustre delivery from Nintendo since that god-awful Mario Basketball game on the DS.
