Did you get the axe in the locked case?  I still am using it, and I'm in the mid-30s.. I think I got it around level 15 or so.. tried and true, baby.

Yep, 2 comics and the axe. I haven't tried it yet, I don't use melee weapons often enough, they look like they'd be great against ghouls.

Also I ran into an elite super mutant earlier, that laser gun from the Brotherhood sure tears them apart.

I didn't melee attack one enemy until I got the axe, then I got hooked.  There's also a Grognak chest piece somewhere that I found shortly after the axe, and I wore it for 10 levels or so.. paired well with the axe as it increased melee damage and strength.

You talking the laser gun given by Danse after the first mission where you clear the zone with him?  If so, I used that for a good 10 levels or so as well; BoS is very legit in my book.

Yeah that gun, it's great. I picked up that armor too, but I use the 15/15/15 one from one of the Brotherhood quests.
  • FYI for those of you who missed the Pip Boy Edition: They were available at Best Buy (for the PS4 anyways). VERY limited but if you want one, this will probably be your last chance to buy it at retail price.
  • What weapons are people rolling with the most? I think i already said I've been using alot of pistols. Upgraded the perk for it I think 4 times now so I deal an extra 80% damage with em I think. Found a great Snub Nosed .44 revolver with a scope I've been using alot. Does a crazy amount of damage with my perks and is super accurate with the scope! Only problem is that ammo is a little harder to come by but I just rotate it out for one of my other 3 pistols I like. Also have a great Rifle I use alot and a really nice powerful auto shotgun. Sorta my main arsenal Ive been rollin with for a bit now. Crazy thing is, I'm over 30 hours now and I still havnt been to Diamond City. Don't know why I havnt ventured over there yet. Sort of went everywhere around it. I should probably go pay it a visit tomorrow hear you guys got some good armor there.
  • I'm only a level 12 but I've roamed a lot of the map. I've been to Diamond City and use Nick Valentine as my main companion. I also have Piper (female reporter) and some big super mutant I rescued from Trinity Tower as other options for a companion.

I slowly followed the radio guy I rescued from Trinity Tower back to the radio station. I found a hot woman at the station who I sent to Sanctuary to make them happy and bigger. I've built up pretty good fortifications around Sanctuary but I need to get more scrap to build better items. The same goes with weapon upgrades...I've only done it a few times because I'm usually missing some of the upgrade components.

I usually use the laser rifle if I have ammo for it, otherwise the minigun and some stronger, upgraded pistols have come in handy. I even found a pretty efficient baseball bat and machete.

Am I the only one who thinks they took a little bit of inspiration from Bioshock? Everytime I run around with my Pip Boy playing music, I feel like I'm right back in Rapture from the Bioshock series.

I'm really taking my time with this game since I know how big it is plus SW Battlefront and COD BO3 have taken some time away. FO4 and The Witcher III are my single player, current gen games of the year so far. There's so much to do in these games it's almost overwhelming compared to what we had in the 80s and 90s.

*Edit - Does anyone know where to find ammo for the Cryolator which is in Vault 111 that you have the dog retrieve? I have it and it looks powerful but I've never been able to use it because it takes a specific kind of ammo.

Got a really nice combat shotty, an explosive pistol, the Brotherhood laser gun, and a hardened sniper rifle.

30 hours in and no Diamond City yet, damn dude. There's so much to do, it's easy to get sidetracked.
  • I've wanted to finish the game off but I keep putting off the ending because I heard you have to side with a faction... so some other quests would deactivate at that time. Without spoiling too much, some of the more interesting side quests I've done:

Museum of Witchcraft... kind of a creepy / horror movie feel. Warning, if you do it, come equipped for a legit boss.

Covenant... the whole town was way too friendly. You can tell there is a hidden purpose in the town.

Castle / Mirelurk Queen, but we've already talked about that one.

I mostly roll with a powered up shotty and sniper rifle, and some upgraded pipe rifle that uses .45 ammo. The pipe rifle is my normal for raiders / feral ghouls, and I use the sniper rifle when entering new areas from a distance. The shotty is the go to in buildings, especially those with Super Mutants.

Edit: Oh and the Grognak Battle Ax was good for a bit, but you get a better (and less heavy) melee weapon when you defeat the Swan boss.  You can go explore the lake around the Freedom Trail if you want to check him out...
  • Really looking forward to getting home next week and playing about 200 hours of this.
  • So one of my asshole settlers in Sanctuary took a power suit and is wearing it around. How do I take it back? I think I left a few cores in it too.....
  • I'm right around 40 hours at the moment... still have yet to really work on a town/ home beyond placing enough beds for everyone, and doing some small stuff here and there in Sanctuary; I can't stop questing around as I just want to get more perks from leveling up.

DQ- I switch it up between my shotty, auto laser rifle, sniper, combat rifle, and axe; all are "legendary"/ the star as they were all found from legendary enemies (except the axe). I just recently started invest into Gun Nut, so I have three points into that, and one into Science, so my guns are getting real pimp now.

Mad- thank you.. you reminded me to get my ass to Vault 111 and get that gun; I completely forgot about it.

Jone- .. Swan boss.. must.. get.. new.. melee.. weapon. Thanks!

Empire- I didn't even know that could happen... haha. You don't see the "transfer" option on any of them?

Pick pocket the core from the suit so it powers down. always take cores out when leaving them so this doesnt happen.

Just took out the Swan! Wasnt too tough. I just used a powerful sniper rifle from a far and when he got close I kept a fence between him and me and used the auto shotgun to finish him off! The weapon you get is pretty cool!

Finally made my way to Diamond city! Did a few missions then returned to the Brotherhood missions! Just found the Junk Jet which is fun! also, I finished the missions for the robots on the boat! That was really fun and recommend it to people if they havnt done it yet! Was not expecting the conclusion!
  • Beat it with the Minutemen quest on Friday and then the Brotherhood quest yesterday. Ending is basically the same, but missions vary. Without giving any spoilers, I'll say that the Minutemen final quests seemed to be more rewarding, while the Brotherhood final quests seemed to be more of fetch this, talk to so and so, repeat again and again, etc. Both contained some good plot elements, worth playing each.

Going to do the institute side too, but no interest in the Railroad. Very solid game, I'd give it a 9 or 9.5 out of 10 for sure.
  • Sssoooooo, anyone collecting anything in their travels? Sorta find myself keeping Teddy Bears and pool balls. At first I was just trying to get enough balls to fill a rack and have a set, then I realized you can't fit a whole set in a rack so I I just kept picking em up and they kept piling up! And when I found out my dog likes bears I started saving em an putting em in his little room.

I'm 50 hours deep now and have been adding alot of perks to science, gun nut, town leader and different things so now I can make pretty sweet weapons and have stores in my towns! Also, a tip for getting parts to add mods to guns. Just grab alot of the junk you see laying around. Aluminum cans, desk fans, toy cars, ect. Alot of the parts are needed for mods like screws & springs and things. You can go to your weapon mod table to check to see what you need for each mod and inspect junk you pick up to see what it breaks down to in parts.

Here's a couple of my favorite creations I've been using!

  • Updated the title of the post and put a spoiler tag on there. Between work and sharing the game with my wife, I think I'm only at 25 hours/level 25 but I have a 4 day weekend coming. This game has definitely lived up to the hype for me.

    image
  • Another good thing to know for those using .44 revolvers, shotguns or .50 cal sniper rifles alot and are having trouble finding ammo, there's a lady named Eleanor that lives just a ways south from Diamond city. Her location isn't on the map. She lives in a little camper and sells alot of ammo. Every time I go she has about 140 .44 rounds and about 100 .50 & Shotgun Shells. Those 3 are usually a little harder to come by. Wish I would of knew about this a little earlier so I thought I'd share.

So just south of Diamond City, past the Boston Police Rationing Site and a little north of Fairline Hills Estates if that helps!

The Marker and Arrow on the map here is where it's at.

  • How do you remove power cores from suits? I see the core listed in the suit, but when I hit A(Xbox), I just climb into the suit.

EDIT: Oh wait, do I just use Transfer? If so, then I'm a dunce.

I got a Wounding 10mm pistol really early on in the game, and it's my main gun. I frankensteined parts onto it from other guns, so even without having the proper perks to craft the mods, my gun has awesome parts. Adding a Suppressor and using Sneak Attacks makes this thing absolutely brutal. Wounding weapons are OP as hell.

Yep, you just transfer and remove them. Never leave them in, as I found out. I tried to pickpocket it out so a woman would leave the suit, but everyone started shooting me. So I waited until she wandered out of town and shot her. Sadly I lost the frame, but I recovered the parts.
  • Yikes, I need to remove some cores then. I've got 4 power suits on display at my Castle, and all these farmers working right next to them, lol.

FARMERS ARE HARD WORKING PEOPLE. HOW DARE YOU ASSUME THEY WOULD STEAL POWER ARMOR!

    Yup, Quantums and Nuka Trucks:

    image

I knew from prior Bethesda games this display would self-destruct upon a load eventually (and did),  so I stuck them in a tub by the weapon stand:

    image

I really wanted one of those keychains for display, but there's no way to drop keys when picked up, and they can't be carried through doors to the Commonwealth. Well, I found one outside in the SE part of the map, and carried it for 10 minutes back to Sanctuary for display:

    image

If and when I find a Quantum keychain in the same fashion, I'll do the very same with it.

  • Hahhaha!! ^^^That's Awesome^^^ the bathtub full of quantums looks great! I'll havnt drank an of mine, just been storing em so maybe I'll have to bust em out and display em somewhere!

Also I've sorta been stockpiling toy aliens and rocketships and have done anything with those either yet.
  • Level 73 right now, here's my favorite gear:

    image

Rank 5 in Gunslinger, this is deadly with rank 3 Concentrated Fire. Good for 16 hits with V.A.T.S.

    image

Rank 5 Rifleman, a real gem. .308 seems rare, so I've been hoarding all I can. May have to drop to .45 for 180 damage at some point.

    image

Great with sneak attacks on full health enemies at a distance.

    image

Up close and personal, absolutely devastating damage over time melee. Rank 4 Big Leagues, will get Rank 5 once it actually applies double damage and doesn't glitch to base damage with that perk. +80% for now.

    image

Rifleman rank 5, for laying the hurt in a real hurry.

Damn dude... here I was thinking I was the highlest level on NA so far, but nope... you defiantly just added around 30 levels to my character.  That gear is sick... also, awesome Nuka-tub.
  • ^^Damn!!! Yeah, I'm only level 35 or so, lol, i think i've spent too much time tinkering with shit and not enough time in the field! Just checked on my lunch and I'm 53 1/2 hours deep.
  • God damn Nesmaster, savage weaponry man. I've only cracked level 25, need to do more story missions and less exploring and fucking around.

Lol, I think I had like 1 main quest completed well into the 40s. ALL the fucking around.

Ran into a Legendary Deathclaw a while ago. 1 hit kill (belly shot of course) on Survival difficulty with that Gauss Rifle. Damn thing dropped before it could even mutate. It was a great moment.

If you guys haven't been here, I encourage you to give the basement a look. I promise it's worth it and should make you smile. Far east Downtown, east of Swan/Goodneighbour:

    I'll check it out tonight.

What difficulty did you begin at, and when did you increase (unless you started survival), etc.?

I began normal but right around level 10 or 15 I bumped up to hard as I wanted more legendary gear.. I'm real curious about how many legendary creeps spawn on very hard/ survival and the gear increase I could get.

  • Started on Very Easy, to beeline for the INT bobblehead. Played on Normal briefly, bumped to Survival shortly after. Dropped it here and there as needed. Probably at 20 - 25 or so when some better gear starts spawning, left it on Survival 99%. My thinking is that you might as well play for those rare drops as frequent as you can get them to appear. Lots of lower end garbage drops, but then you get things like I posted here (well, the last 2) sprinkled in to make it worth it. I'm guessing here, but in 5ish days playtime, probably 200 legendary enemies? I'll look for sure next load. Sometimes you can play for 2 hours and get none, or 3 or more in 5 minutes.

    Edit: 189 Legendary kills in 4D 17H 30M

Right on... I was going to say I bet I have around 100 so I knew it'd be much more.

How often do you wear the power armor around?
