Just beat TMNT for the first time

I never made it past level 3 when I was young and really never tried that hard to get further.

But this week I decided to give it another shot. I knew it wasn't really as hard as it seemed and some people say. But you can't play it casually; you have to know what to do and be very careful.

Well, I got through the first 3 levels and stupidly died and had to use a continue. Then I put my NES on pause for 3 days because I had other things to do.

Then on level 4 I ended up screwing up again and burned another continue.

At this point I was on level 5 (with the technodrome) and had all my turtles but no scrolls or items.

But I figured out an important key to this game; the easiest and best place to get scrolls is the top left building of level 5- I found the trick to get around the spiders and build up scrolls, and I used the pizzas in the center building to refill my life.

So now I was set, I had about 80 scrolls for every turtle and full life.

The technodrome was pretty easy using scrolls (actually every boss in this game was pretty easy).

So then the final level. I very carefully went through, spamming scrolls whenever I needed to.

Luckily, Shredder was also a joke like the other bosses and went down in like 4 hits.

So now I feel like I could beat this game again pretty quickly; definitely not easy, but far from the hardest NES game either. (as long as you have a map)

  • Congrats. Its not as tough as people say, but determination is the key.

Yiur right . You cant casually play tmnt 1
  • It seems like a bunch of adults made this for themselves; it definitely caters to the strategic-minded gamer.

That's probably why a lot of people don't like it - kids just want to casually play a game for fun, not strategize about how to save up scrolls for the final level.
  • Still on my list of things to do. Congrats
  • It's so great to see more and more people conquering these challenging classics. I've yet to complete it myself, so thank you for reminding me that it's on my list. Congrats, OP!

Ditto - I gave it a real shot a year or so ago when I was checking a lot of classics off the list. This is one of few I did not beat - a huge accomplishment. Nicely done.

  • Legitimate congratulations. I haven't gotten much past the dam level.
  • I beet 1-3 over the summer. Was no easy task. Congrats man.
  • Congrats, I feel like playing this one today actually...nice little Sunday morning TMNT.

    Congrats!

Now do it without the scrolls.
  • One of my childhood favorites! Congrats on the win! I used to be able to get to the technodrome as a kid, but could never pass it. I didn't first beat it until probably 2006 or so on emulator, and then a few years ago on the real hardware. The more you play it, the easier it gets, though some parts will always be somewhat tricky.
  • I also have a soft soft for this one. I know the majority favor the beat'em up style of gameplay when it comes to the turtles, but I like the platforming and exploration elements as well. It's a shame that a follow up was never made that improved upon this formula.

Some of the GB/GBA games come close as far as the platforming involved and combat style, but they don't have the overworld map to explore. To me, that makes the original on NES much better. It makes you feel like you're actually IN the TMNT universe.

Congrats OP! Now go relax and watch the original motion picture! (Actually, Secret of the Ooze was always my favorite )
  • It's threads like this that make me excited to play my NES games. I've never fully completed the first TMNT on the NES; it was "legendarily hard" in my childhood. I'm stoked to finally make it to the Technodrome!
