I never played Metroid Prime

I'm still new to the franchise since I only played Super Metroid and Other M for the past years. I really enjoyed both games especially Super Metroid, but I never played Metroid Prime before, and I had the chance to buy it back in the day when it came out. I heard that it was fantastic and the best 3D metroid game. Am I missing out on this game?

  • I personally like it a lot, but the only other Metroid game I've played is the first one. It's definitely one of the best games on the system, imo.

    Dude... play Super Metroid!!

to the OP... yes, play Prime... it's awesome.  Echoes is quite good as well.  The first Metroid game I ever played was Prime and it defiantly turned me onto the series big time.

  • It is definitely the best 3D Metroid game and is the best out of the 3 Prime games. With the game being cheap there is no reason not to play it.
  • I don't have to play the other Prime games to get the "full experience and story" right? I just don't want to do that.
  • Nah, you'd be fine playing the first and if you like it enough then check out the others.

I know man, it's been on my list of games I need to try out, but I keep getting sidetracked. Zero Mission is on there as well.

Oh, I've also played Metroid Prime Pinball. Does that count?

To the OP: starting with Prime is fine.
  • Play Metroid Prime. It's fantastic. My favorite of the entire series after Super Metroid.
  • I enjoy it a lot! Play it!

Exactly what I was going to say. If you like the first you will want to play the others.

  • I've only had played Metroid NES and Super Metroid, being this last one on my top 3 favorite games in general.

I didn't play videogames much after that for like 20 years.

2 years ago I turned my attention back to videogames and started my collection, I didn't know anything about N64, Gamecube etc.

I found out there were more Metroid games so I investigated. My brother recommended me the Metroid Prime Wii version instead of Gamecube because of the controls, so, as a collector I obviously got myself Metroid Prime Trilogy.

I played Metroid Prime and it was great, IT IS like Super Metroid but in First Person. Now I don't know which one is my favorite between Super Metroid and Metroid Prime, to think there's still Echoes, Corruption, Other M, Zero and Fusion, wooaaahh, but I decided to leave it at Prime for now as I wanted to play Zelda LTTP, I've never played a Zelda game before.

Metroid Prime is awesome, I even turned off the "hints" and the "Auto aim" just to make it SNES hard, I didn't want the CPU telling me where to go, I wanted to get lost and figure it out myself. I beat Prime months ago and actually want to play it again because I want to find some other stuff I missed.

After playing without Auto Aim I don't recommend turning it off, is like tediously unnecessary and not and interesting challenge to Aim Manually
  • Metroid Zero Mission is a really good remake of the original but at the same time it feels a lot like Super Metroid. It is my 2nd favorite in the series behind Super. I highly recommend you play it. Fusion was a really good follow up to Super but it felt linear as you could only explore certain areas at a time and they tell you where to go. As for Other M.....well umm..... it's ok......it's not bad by any means but it could have been a lot better.
  • I've actually never played a Metroid period, so don't feel bad! I hear plenty of great things about the SNES one though, really need to try it out one of these days.
  • Please try it.

I only played it because I'm collecting for GameCube, and a friend recommended it. Amazing game. Haven't tried echoes though...
  • Lots of good advice here! Give it a play and get back to us!
  • The first Metroid Prime game is definitely worth playing. I remember playing through to completion, and being quite satisfied. I couldn't get into the sequels, though. Super Metroid is my go-to entry, though.
  • I loved the first Metroid Prime, one of my favorite games actually. I think it's really a must-play. Metroid Prime and Fusion are actually the two games that got me into the series. It's definitely way better than Other M, so if you liked that you should love Prime. (I too think Other M is better than most people give it credit for though) So yeah I think you are missing out by not playing the first Metroid Prime. The sequel, Metroid Prime 2: Echoes, I found to be more annoying to navigate, less memorable, and just overall less enjoyable, but is still a good game. Metroid Prime 3: Corruption is also good but I never had the motivation to get far. I'm one of those "I hate anything with motion controls" people. One day I plan to go back to it and give it another shot.
  • I thought the original Metroid Prime was just "OK".

It's a decent cave exploration experience, but the combat is pretty dissatisfying, and in terms of atmosphere/music, I felt like there were too many parts that felt like the fever/nightmare sequence in the movie Jacob's Ladder.

    Just didn't connect.

And the stick-based aiming has been done so much better in other games (like 007 Nightfire) that it was glaringly bad, in my recollection.

On the other hand, I thought Metroid Prime 3 on the Wii was done extremely well, and the point-and-shoot (or point-and-manipulate) mechanic with the Wii Remote was PERFECTLY executed.

So if you were going to play one, just play Prime 3 and get "the full experience" of what the game CAN be.

Exactly, it made Metroid (1) "good"

Oh yeah can't recommend Zero Mission enough. Fantastic game and the poster child of what a great remake is.
  • I'm one of the few that prefers Fusion over Zero mission, mainly because it was a follow up to the series and not just a remake.

Fusion was fun, but I thought the level of hand-holding/linear nature of the game was kind of disatisfying for a Metroid title.

  • They're certainly good, a bit overrated I'd say, but very atmospheric.

The scanning gimmick gets old quickly for me.
  • Metroid Prime is in my "Top 5" favorite Metroid games and I would definitely recommend playing it if you like any other Metroid game. My main concern before playing it initially was "does it feel like a Metroid game?". The answer is "Yes". It's very immersive and feels just like a Metroid game but in first-person. And the music is great, especially that X-Files-esque title music (which is sadly missing from Metroid Prime Trilogy). I would put Metroid Prime on par with Super Metroid.

As for Other M, I lost interest in it part-way through. The first-person "hunt the pixel" portions brought the game play to a screeching halt. I liked the idea of switching views but I didn't like losing the ability to move Samus. I loved the 3rd-person action parts. They had a 2.5D vibe that I think should be expanded on in future games (if there are any in the works). I also did not like the cut-scenes and wasn't fond of the story or characterization of Samus.
  • I played Metroid Prime on my GameCube way back when and absolutely loved it. I never got the second one or the third one, however. This summer, I played through and beat Zero Mission on the GameBoy Player for GC (by the way, loved playing that game on the big screen), and got me wanting to "follow" the storyline, so I went ahead and purchased the Metroid Prime Trilogy on Wii U. The Prime Trilogy takes place between Metroid 1 and Metroid 2, correct? I have yet to start playing the trilogy on Wii U yet, but I plan to start very soon!
  • I liked the wii controls better than the original. It made looking around a lot more intuitive and natural feeling. The original GC controls felt constrictive to me. Awesome game either way though.
