I finally beat "Jackal"

I've been playing it for a few weeks off and on trying to beat it. The last level/boss is really hard. I made it to the tank boss with like three lives and only grenades and took him down. What an adrenaline rush. I did use a continue on the last stage but since this game has limited continues it's okay.

  • I just beat this last month too, I didn't find it too difficult I had like seven or eight lives on the last level, that game was a blast to play, congratulations.

It was mainly the last stage that was giving me a hard time. That damn helicopter is a cheap shot artist and difficult to avoid especially when you're trying to release POWs. This time I just blasted through the stage ignoring POWs.

  • I wasn't even aware I was on the last level, I had forced myself to beat castlevania ninja gaiden and battletoads a few months ago just to feel awesome and in the midst of a rage quit I popped this in for fun and randomly beat it, I remember the boss almost feeling like a shmup level lol.
  • Congrats, man! Jackal is one of the top games on the NES for me and I've yet to beat it myself. I may have to give it some more time in the near future.
  • Congrats, I love Jackal, my dad and I used to play it together all the time growing up.
  • Jackal is an outstanding game, that doesn't get enough recognition. There are some great speed run videos on YouTube if you ever get some free time.
  • awesome! its a tough game!
  • My friends and I used to get through this whole game no problems. We had everything memorized and could move through the hazards in perfect syncrhinocity. I played it again recently and only got to the beginning of stage 5 and got a game over. I was like ... this is tougher than I remember! But it's all about dropping off all eight POWs at the helipad if you can.
  • Nice I was actually just playing this one the other day.... pretty damn good cheap game possibly one of the best for the price it has on its head.
  • Congratulations! Jackal is one of the more underrated games on the system IMO.
  • Hey, I just got a copy of this from an NA member. I feel like the first four stages are pretty easy and then the difficulty suddenly spikes, though most of the bosses are easy. Haven't beaten it yet but I did get to the last level.

It's pretty classic Konami and very arcade-y.
  • Man, I have ALWAYS wanted to play Jackal. I had some ancient issue of Game Players that had this and Metal Gear right next to each other and I used to get them confused all the time. I really need to get on this.

I find that the first boss is more difficult than some of the later ones. I usually lose a life on the first boss.
  • I can get to the final boss without dying.

But if the last boss kills me, I'm screwed without my good weapons.

But in all seriousness, everyone needs to play and beat this game.  It's best played with 2 players!
  • One of my all time favorites for sure!
  • I played Jackal for the first time for the NA weekly contests a couple of years ago and it was a blast.

It took me 3-4 attempts to beat it so I didn't find it to be all that difficult except for the last stage and final boss. In particular the final boss was really memorable and I had no shot the first time I made it that far.

It shouldn't be much of a surprise that the game is good since it's a Konami game after all.

Yeah, there is a BIG leap in difficulty with the last level, and the memorization of where the sniper-helicopters come from is crucial.

We played it last year for the high score contest and a few of us managed to one-life the game, but it involved A LOT of repeats through that last stretch to get the pattern down.

  • Beat this game once, and I'll probably never willingly do it again, lol.

    Congrats, OP!
  • BTW, it might be a glitch, but those two lasers before the final tank boss can't hit you when you're between them and it isn't necessary to destroy them. Knowing that makes that part so much easier.

    But they're worth POINTS!

Yeah, this game has a lot of risk versus reward noments where you can play for points or play it safe. There are some parts of the game where I would rather play it safe.

  • Mmmmm Jackal. A personal favorite of mine since childhood. I immediately get the first level music stuck in my head.
