RCA to Component

Hey!

I just bought a new TV and it only has hdmi and component inputs. The question is what is the best way to connect my NES / SNES to my new TV? As far as I know RCA won't work in component? I tried yellow in green, white in blue and red in red, but nothing happens. I know nothing about that stuff, I'm trying to find something on Google, but I don't have the solution yet.

I'm pretty sure a fellow NAer could help me out with this?

Thank you!

  • Here's an excellent series of videos on the subject:

  • What brand tv? If there's no composite ("RCA" is the plug type) then normally you use the green in component section for video in.
  • ^^ You might also have to change a setting so the TV looks for composite video over the Luma (Y/green) line.

With more info on the Make/Model we can try to goggle-fu it

Yeah sorry about that, I should have included the brand..

    It's a Sony w800c 50" official specs here : http://www.sony.com/electronics/televisions/w850c-w800c-series/specifications

It says 1 x composite in, but I can't see anything like it. This is the back of my TV : http://i.rtings.com/images/reviews/w800c/w800c-inputs-back-large.jpg

Video should go in green I guess, but it's not working like I said in my first post..

Thanks for these, I watched the first one, very interesting.

  • There's a mode you should be able to pick on the component channel to select Composite. At least I think that's what fixed it for some other NA'er last week.

The green is the video input, you may need to change options in the menu
  • Is it on the side or the front? My parents have a Sony and it has composite on the left hand side.
  • It's working, it was an option indeed. BUT the image is all twisted, you can see waves in it and the sound worked for 10 seconds and then stopped.

What the hell is going on?!
  • This is what you see (and the waves move top to bottom, it's quite annoying) :

Are the audio cables plugged into the right spot? Do you have anything else plugged into the components red and blue jacks?

  • From the op it looks like hes got the audio hooked up to the pb and pr jacks. Im suprised you got any audio at all since youre sending it through the video input. The white and red audio plugs need to go in the white and red (furthest left on your picture) jacks. The blue and red for the video should be blank and thr yellow plugs into the green.

I plugged the video in the green and I plugged the white and red in Audio L and Audio R. At first they were in pb and pr jacks, but right now everything is plugged in the right spot. It was the same setup when I took the picture last night.

I'll do some more test tonight with the SNES and N64, I'm pretty sure it's not the TV, might be the wires or something.. I hope!

  • Honestly dude, i NEVER could get systems to look even decent on a flatscreen, especially with RCA. And some systems wouldn't even display correctly at all, just like you have above. Wavy images and severely blurry.

Cause of my health condition i can't carry CRT TV's so I had to get an XRGB mini. Best $300 i ever spent on the hobby.

I hope you figure it out though. There's nothing worse than having all these awesome retro systems and nothing to play them on!!!

Member Cheesemeister posted me a link to a Youtube channel and in one of the video they talked about the Framemeister. Is it really as good as they say? Maybe you don't have the same brand, but it's in the same price range. Do you still have problems with the display (waves, blurry, etc) or it's all gone with your XRGB mini?

Like I said, I will do more testing this week, but I might consider it if I can't get a proper image. It was quite good on my 32" LCD before I switched, I never thought it would be that bad on a bigger screen!

Yup you re right XRGB is the framemeister

The XRGB Mini makes my games look better than i even remember them. I will hook it up today and plug in a bunch of systems i have and show you some pictures.

It's super expensive but like i said, after scottmog showed me everything i was blown away by the quality.

I use RGB cables for SNES

    And Component for PS2

And S video for N64 ( N64 actually looks good, well you know what i mean )

You can use RGB for everything but then you need to use an RGB splitter which i have yet to find a good one.

SNES benefits the most from RGB and its my favorite system so SNES got the RGB cables lol

I have no experience with the NES but i hear the quality is on par with SNES if you have a good set of cables and a modded NES since NES didn't have AV cables.

  • x2 on the XRGB Mini. The up front cost is huge, however, with the Mini itself, modded systems and all new cables. It is hands down the best looking picture and it's not even close. Beat the hell out of making room for and handling CRTs.

Do you really need modded systems to get the best of the mini?

I'm not very familiar with modded systems, but let's take the NES for example. If you plug it to the XRGB mini with the standard yellow and red output on the side and a good cable, is it enough?

  • I bought one of these for my Sony Bravia TV and it works great.

    http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00I482KZI?psc=1&redirect=true&ref_=oh_aui_detailpage_o03_s00

The only thing is that the picture looks like crap when it's stretched out in 16:9, but if you just change the aspect ratio to 4:3 it looks really good. I was trying to convert the composite signal on all my old hardware to HDMI just for ease, and this worked really well if you're on a budget like I was lol. Hope that helps out!

To get the best out of it? Yes. Is it going to look better than plugging directly in to your LCD without RGB mods? Yes. I can tell the difference, however, when RGB is used instead of RCA. I'm of the opinion that if you are spending $300 on the XRGB already, why not just do it all the way.

Thanks for your input. I did more tests tonight, my NES still looks the same with different wires, the SNES looks better, but I'm not satisfied. I'll think about all of this!

  • Go for it dude if you have the money.

I thought NES didn't have AV/RCA though?? I thought only RF and it needed to be modded for anything else? I could totally be wrong.

But yes even the RCA would look amazing on your HDTV. But an RGB is way worth it they are only like $20 bucks.
  • Just start saving money now. RGB mod your nes, get RGB cables for your snes. Get a good SCART switch box and buy a framemeister like I and many others have.

Here are some pics. I am working on some LTTP pictures as well since your avatar is agahnim

It's a beautiful picture. And i notice no input lag. I have my TV in game mode which is a must. And turn all the filtering effects off.

I also play in 720p with scanlines, you CAN now use 1080p with scanlines which before you could not. The quality suffered.

So i am now deciding if i want to convert all my profiles to 1080P but to be honest, i have no issues with 720p, it looks fantastic. There are A LOT of settings on this thing, but once it's all set up it's easily the best piece of equipment i have purchased. Every system that i have put through it looks even better than i remember.

Keep in mind since i am taking pictures with a phone and not screenshotting the pictures do not do it justice. The scanlines are super crisp, they show up blurry in the pics.

Do you play in 720 or 1080???

1080. Anything less that the TV needs to do (scaling/processing) the better.

Where did you get your profiles from?? I see a lot of websites that mess with the zoom feature, but i never feel like it's needed.......

All my other settings are the same as what's recommended.

I will have to switch to 1080p now that the scanlines are fixed

  • Thanks both of you for taking the time to post some pictures!!

The quality is quite impressive. I'll start watching prices.. At the moment the CAD is so weak, it would cost me 400$ or more to afford one and I don't know anybody that would be able to mod my NES.

I'll wait a few months, Canada is officially out of recession now, so maybe our dollar will raise a little.

Thanks again for all your advices and I will pm you if I need specific details!

Mother of god, i just hooked the XRGB up to my projector thanks to Jauneystudious reminding me. It's..........it's........so beautiful.

I can't wait to play chrono trigger like this, or any game for that matter.

The input lag is just about ZERO on this thing. It was amazing on my TV already but i can definitely notice a tiny difference in lag on the TV.
