Home cinema projectors for gaming?

It is kind of a gaming topic as opposed to a collecting topic so I have decided to post it in here. please move this admins if you feel like it should be in a different section.

Has anyone ever used a home cinema TV projector as a means to play games? other than having variable screen sizes is there any other benefits or disadvantages to having one and do you feel like they would be good for gaming?

I have had my b-day recently and christmas is coming up so I have had a few gift cards from relatives for amazon (approximately £200 so far) on top of that my old CRT just died and instead of stealing the HD TV from my living room and put it in the man cave i thought i would improve nerdvana a little bit by adding a new TV and add a surround sound system.

I have never even considered a TV projector before but after seeing a couple pop up on the amazon black friday deals it seems like a good idea.

  • I JUST got into it this last month and it is amazing.

I had bought a cheapo projector for my 2 year anniversary to replicate our first date (movie) and ended up falling in love with it.

I upgraded to a viewsonic and not even 2 weeks later to a Benq1070.

The experience is unlike anything i have ever experienced. Your screen can be up to 200" or bigger, there is no input lag i can tell, and the picture quality even on my wall with no screen is superb.

I can try and get some pictures for you.

AS far as perks over a regular tv, well the only one really is the screen size. AFAIK a projector does nothing else better or extra over a TV.

But playing games on a 120 inch screen with surround sound is mind blowing.

For retro systems i also use an XRGB mini though so i am not sure what retro consoles would look like without it.

But for modern gaming that's not a problem.
  • that's brilliant to hear. if you could get some pics of it in use it would be awesome thanks i will also check that benq one you mentioned.
  • I think the main thing people forgot about with projectors is light. You'll have to sit in the dark every time you want to watch TV or play a game. Maybe you do this now and isn't a hindrance to you, but it's something to think about.
  • I currently use this little guy.

3000 Lumens, and 1080p. I got it for just under $200

So far it's been great. It's not one of the big brands, like BenQ, but I haven't had any trouble with it.

I use 3 of the inputs for my set up, with VGA being the main.

    VGA:

    PC

    Dreamcast

    Wii

    Neo Geo MVS

    SNES

    S-video:

    PS2

    Saturn

    RCA:

    NES

    N64

Everything runs through a set of switch boxes, so only 3 lines run to the projector itself (4 if you include power).

I definitely suggest using a basement or a room that can block light. For mine it isn't necessary, it's still playable in a room with lights on, but it does look much more awesome in a dark room. Also, plan the cord path before you mount anything. It's a plus if you can run the cords above the ceiling and have them drop right behind the projector, but you can't, there are other options. I use some white plastic cable hide and it goes a long way for making the look cleaner.

  • I kinda want to do this but know nothing on the differences. My wife is slightly against it but if i can persuade her it can turn our basement into a pretty good theatre for date nights or family movies....not to mention games lol.

No joke, my wife really enjoys being able to watch movies on the big screen from the comfort of her 10 blanket cocoon of inferno. Maybe not 10, but all I know is that I'll cuddle with her for the first 15 min of the movie, then I need the hell out of there, lol. The rest of the movie I spend next to her outside of the blankets

Point is, play up the comfort side as a selling point if she's on the fence about it. Not to mention, the cost of actually going out to see a movie is expensive anymore. Like $30 for 2 tickets alone, plus snacks on top of that. Stay home for 7 movies, and the projector I posted is paid for. Sure, you don't see them when they a first released, but in my mind there are only 2 or 3 movies each year that warrant an actual theater experience. (the new Star Wars for instance)

    LMFAO i can relate

She says she hates big screens that give her headaches....idk how to deal with that I think me and her went to the movies twice in 3 years??? Sucks when you don't earn enough So the home theatre idea is what I always wanted. Do you use a screen or just the wall? I was going to paint the wall either grey or white. Will look kinda dull until the projector is on.

  • You can totally use projectors in the day if you buy a decent one.

You just obviously cant have an open window right on your screen.

My benq has no issues with this.

My fiance is blown away by it and loves watching movies on it. Even my parents that we are currently staying with want one now. We are currently watching breaking bad on it

Its something you have to see in person to fully appreciate.

I cant say i would ONLY have a projector because we also have a tv in case we want to watch/do different things.

Also note most cheaper projecyors are not true 1080. They use hdmi and take a 1080 signal but gets scaled down to the native resolution.

More expensive projectors are full 1080 and the differemce is definitely noticeable, but even the 250$ viewsonic still looked great.

At my previous home, I used the wall. At my current home I use a screen.

I had a longer throw where I used to live, so the view size was massive. Bigger than any screen I cared to buy. So for that situation, I painted the wall. I used white ceiling paint at the time (because I already had some on hand). It worked well, but I found out later that a light grey might actually be better. Best advice I can give you if you go that route is to buy 3 inch black velvet tape to boarder the viewing area. The velvet doesn't reflect light, so the edges come out to be nice and sharp without any bleed over.

    here's the old place:

  • I have been looking through amazon at projectors now for the past two hours and I am completely swamped with obviously nasty budget, obsurdly expensive and a few decent looking £500-800 models. I am completely lost!!

that moment when you want to pay budget prices (£2-300) for a decent enough piece of equipment but dont want to end up with garbage
  • This projector is amazing. Not full HD but still looks great. I nabbed it for 250 off ebay NEW. I only upgraded because i sold my car to pay off a ton of stuff and wanted to do something nice for myself.

So i got a benq. But this one was totally satisfying as well. I even was able to sell the viewsonic for just about what i paid.

I say start with this one and if you end up loving it, go for the gusto.

Or if you want to just go for it, get the benq 1070. It's easily the best reviewed projector for under 1000. In fact its only 680 now. The HD26 by Optoma is comparable but not as good. It is 100 cheaper though and is close to your $400-500 budget. Still an amazing projector, and theres debates everywhere of why the HD26 is as good or better than the BENQ.

O and all of these projectors are 3D. Yes thats right, even the cheap viewsonic.
  • Looks like you also get a $30 amazon card as well so the BENQ is like 650 now. I got that deal last week i am surprised it still is going.
  • See my last post here!! I just hooked the XRGB up to my BENQ...............so awesome....

  • I have a projector and I think the games look very good with it.

Last year I took some pictures when I was playing some games on the NES and N64.

The pictures may not be very good but the games run great when you see them in person.

    I have an 106" screen.

here is the one I use. I do not have this up for permanent use, but when I have some friends over and need an extra screen or when I sometimes play outside in the summer I throw this up on my garage door. Looks really nice and I know they have a higher res model now. This is the size of a big deck of cards
  • I have played on projectors before and it is neat. It helps to play in a dark room.

The pics provided are very neat.
