  • I decided to play this again tonight and managed to one credit clear it... just barely. I had a rough time with act 6 and made it to the final bosses with one life left. I was relieved that I beat it because getting a game over sucks.

Man, I was hoping that you posted to say that you beat it! Which form of the boss are you stuck on? The second one takes forever with just the sword, but if you stay on the ground, you can usually dodge his fireballs and jump up and hit him when you get a clean shot.

Nope, fuck this game. I have a feeling it will be another year before I touch it. I got stuck at exactly the same part as I did last year, and 3 hours of focused playing yielded absolutely nothing. Oddly enough, I didn't even get this pissed at Volkmire's in Battletoads.

    Fuck Ninja Gaiden.
  • I finally managed to no death it back on Friday. I can 1cc it pretty much every time, but I usually manage to lose at least one life by missing a jump somewhere along the way and another during the Jaquio fight due to getting impatient and trying to rush through it.
  • Praise you guys for your patience and persistence with this game. After 3 hours of failing non-stop, I've had enough. I'll be much prouder to complete Battletoads, honestly. That's my #1 NES classic I NEED to complete.

No argument there. Battletoads was the toughest NES game that I've beaten. No deathing Ninja Gaiden was easy by comparison, IMO.

  • "Ninja Gaiden" is total memorization and just requires hours of practice until you have all of the levels and boss patterns mapped in your head.

"Battletoads" is far worse because of the reflexes and exactness required in addition to the memorization. You can know exactly what is coming up and still die over and over again because you aren't fast and precise enough with your movements.

I'm warping past "Volkmire's" on my first playthrough because it's bullshit how fast those things come at you once you're past the fireballs and missiles. The next level "Intruder Excluder" is much easier by comparison. I'll probably still learn this level eventually... just so I can say that I've beaten all the levels.

"Ninja Gaiden" is what I put on when I want a relatively short and easy game when I've had too much of a game like "Battletoads".

I can knock out a game of Ninja Gaiden in about 20 minutes now. I'd hate to think how long it would take me to beat Battletoads, especially when I haven't seriously played it in over two years.

This will sound odd to some, but I actually prefer a game like Battletoads, where reflexes are the deciding factor. Games like Ninja Gaiden are awesome when you're in the flow, but the second you miss ONE step, you get ambushed and die. I can make it to 6-2 no-deathing, then it's like hitting a wall. Battletoads, for me, yields itself slowly, but you always progress. Ninja Gaiden is like a brick wall for me. Maybe I use a different part of my brain, lmao.
  • "Ninja Gaiden" is like a puzzle game. For every section there is a way to make it through without even getting hit. There are act 6 no damage tutorials on Youtube. Once you know how to do it, it's not that bad. That some sections of "Battletoads" require cat-like reflexes in addition to the memorization makes it more difficult. It's also a longer, denser game with a lot more stuff to learn.

Watching the "Bootsy Beats" for "Terra Tubes", that level looks impossible. You pretty much have to know what is coming throughout the entire level or it's instant death, and it goes on forever. That's "Battletoads".
  • BTW, you might want to give "Ninja Gaiden 2" a try. It's much more forgiving than the first game in a lot of ways and is generally considered the easiest of the trilogy. You get two shadow clones that significantly increase your offensive power. You can move up and down walls without having to do any tricky jumping to get up them. The spinning fire shield is now an item that you can use to breeze through some tough areas. Birds only take one health instead of three. And you get an extra life every 100,000 points. It's still very hard because it's a Ninja Gaiden game, but you might be able to beat this one. The last level before the final bosses is definitely easier.

It's also way more polished in terms of visuals than the first game. It looks great. And it has one of my favorite NES soundtracks... perhaps my favorite music of the series.
  • I single credit cleared "Ninja Gaiden III", finally. I never have to play it again! Although it is fun.

  • Great job on the single credit clear of NG3! I was thrilled when I beat it on my last continue. I've gotten to where I can 1cc/no death Ninja Gaiden every run, so I'm planning on working on NG2 before taking on the struggle of NG3.
  • The 1UP loop in 6-2B usually ensures that I can make it to act 7 with nine lives and all of my continues. The generosity with extra lives is one of the game's few forgiving aspects.

I tend to rush through the crumbling platforms in 7-3B and use my Ninpo hoping that it kills some flying enemies before they can hit me, so I always take some damage before the bosses. My main priority is to not fall to my death. I know that there are better ways of dealing with that area.

I've 1cc'd the first two, but I've never no deathed a NG game. I've come close with the first game, but I always die at least once from a stupid mistake.

For some reason I still have trouble beating Jaquio with just the sword. It just takes forever to dodge his fireballs, jump up to hit him and repeat the process. I usually get impatient and try to jump on one of the pillars and just hack away using the quick jump slash technique and end up getting myself killed. I've lost lives making stupid mistakes as well, usually due to mistiming a jump that I could otherwise make easily because I'm trying to rush through the level.

  • I think that the demon statue is actually the worst boss in "Ninja Gaiden" to beat with just the sword. It requires so many hits to destroy while also having to keep dodging all that crap that deals three units of damage. At least Jaquio's fireballs only do one damage, and his pattern is more predictable, so you're good as long as you don't ram into him, or stand on the platforms long enough for the fireballs to start homing in on you.

Standing on the platforms too long where a pair of fireballs start chasing me from below is usually what does me in. Eventually you think I'd learn to stop that. Oddly enough, I don't have any issue with the demon boss at all. The last few times that I fought it, I only took one bar of damage from getting hit by the head when it rolled across the screen. Given its size, I'm not sure that it's even possible to avoid getting hit.
  • I just no deathed it again in right under 17 minutes. That's not exactly speedrun territory, but it was probably the single smoothest run that I've put together.
  • I just tried again. I made it to 6-2 with 4 lives, lost a bunch to the rocket ninjas, and had to go the rest of the game with 0 lives which I did. Took me about 27 minutes altogether. Not a speed record.

The 6-2 rocket ninjas are the most annoying enemies in the game. Seriously.
  • Nice job, btw. I need to practice more, but I've been playing a lot of Battletoads.
  • I can still make it to the boss in 20 minutes, then it's game over. I can tell this is one that I'll beat randomly in a one-off session when I'm not prepared, lol.

The unlimited continues help. The first time that I ever beat it, I pretty much decided that I was going to sit there in front of the TV until I did it. All three sections of Act VI contain a spin slash power up, so that makes getting through each one a lot easier as long as you don't lose it. Getting kicked back to 6-1 after losing during the boss battle seems really unfair at first, but it's a great way to practice the level. I can usually make through all three sections without taking any damage outside of getting hit by a stray projectile once in a while.

All of this Battletoads talk almost makes me want to give it another try. Luckily, I'm still content with having beaten it once and being done with it.

I just picure you smiling, tossing your Battletoads cart up into the air, and smashing it to pieces with a baseball bat

I'll be very interested to see how it feels to finally beat Battletoads. How long total did it take you to complete, sir?

I thought I posted my story in this thread, but you aren't too far off. I literally took the cart out of my NES as soon as the ending was over, drove straight to the retro game store in the mall and traded it in on the spot. I beat it after we played it for one of the NA weekly contests back in 2013. I had started practicing in the middle of the week before and I played it nonstop that entire week before finally beating it Sunday afternoon. I'd say that it took me about 10 straight days of playing it exclusively several hours a day before I beat it. It was by far the most difficulty that I've had beating any NES game.

    Nintendo games:

They might take 30 hours to beat the first time, and then you can beat them in 30 minutes once you know what you are doing.

It's almost funny how true that statement is!

  • Arrrrrrrrgh. i came so close to a no death run. I made it to the demon without dying once and then screwed up. I still beat the game, but I also lost one more life deliberately on the screen right before the final bosses because I didn't have enough health. I think I'm cursed to never do a no death run of "Ninja Gaiden". Oh well.
