Game hotlines were multi-million dollor businesses, and I'm the only one it seems who admits to calling them.
I've never met anybody else who did. I know my parents would have been PISSED if I'd called a toll-call number.
My parents would've blown a gasket too. Never even dialed the number once, and none of my friends called either. I always thought working for Nintendo, helping people beat games, would've been a cool job.
You can just start a new game with the character named "Zelda" and get the 2nd quest by default.
It's well worth playing through.
Completely new dungeon layouts. Most dungeons have been relocated. Enemy difficulties have been stepped up (Stalfos shoot at you, for instance).
All of the secrets (hidden shops, money, etc) have been relocated.
I've had that on my "to do" list for a while, but I've never got around to it. It's kind of like how I kept putting off playing StarTropics for about two years before I finally started and finished it.

Well, for your first 2nd quest attempt, be sure to keep it as "pure" as possible with respect to hints, etc.
Those of us that beat it as kids did it before there was any kind of player's guide coverage (though that might have filled in some holes/missed items LATER).
It's a fun challenge, and having it as a new experience again would be a great feeling.
I used to only play the Second Quest. Every time I started the game when I was a kid, I ALWAYS named Link "Zelda". I would borrow the game and didn't have access to the instruction manual to know any better.
I was always only able to get to level 6 or so back then before getting too frustrated. I was able to find the entrances to levels 7, 8 and 9, but couldn't beat them.
One day at a friends' house, I warned them about how the Stalfos throw their swords, and when they never did, I started realizing something was wrong. The hidden levels were no longer in the same place as well. I didn't get around to playing through the first quest until about 3 years ago. It was revelational to me. Much easier. After that experience, I was able to plow through Second Quest right after, and I even managed to do so without any armor upgrades (as green Link).

That must of been some sort of mind f#$kery
Yeah man it was. I'm sure I would have figured it out if I owned the game but I had to rent/borrow back then.
And calling him Zelda, I guess I was playing as female Link before it was cool. lol.

That's a good way to put it. I guess I'm lucky in a way that I never really tried it before.
I had so much time and patience way back then that I played through the second quest of Zelda without any help. I'm still amazed at my early accomplishments like that. I then did the same with Zelda II.
What differences are there in the second quest of Zelda II? I know when you beat the game, it starts you back at the beginning with your levels intact, but that's about it. I never hear anyone talk about the Zelda II second quest for whatever reason.
I only meant that I beat Zelda II without any help; I didn't even know there was a second quest in Zelda II.
