As much as I dislike this, it makes sense for Square Enix. Camoon. Final Fantasy VII is 20 years old soon. Do you realize they've been making Final Fantasy XV for _ten_ years now? All these years that they've been rebutting the FF7 remake rumors before the announcements this year their reasoning has been "there's no way we can make it, there's simply too much work to modernisize FFVII world". This is their solution to that, to ensure we're actually gonna play this thing at FFVII's 20th, not the 30th anniversary. That must be the primary reason - they've finally realized, for some reason they make games at a 0.1 pace of normal game studio.
"The Final Fantasy VII director explained that since they won't be dividing up the game, the substance of the original won't be cut, and Square Enix can then take that substance and do a full-on remake.". I see this as a way of actually getting full modern HD FFVII with voices and all. Have faith! (But as a disclaimer I must say I would've preferred cel shaded original FFVII art style version over this and they better make sure Episodic does NOT mean there's no world map and backtracking options! Also, I pretty much think FFVII is the single best and to me the dearest game I have ever played. Luckily, those discs I have won't be affected by this in any way).
Oh. And obviously episodic format is going to net them more money. I've paid hundreds for SNES game and regularly pay 70-100 bucks for limited editions still so it would be pretty damn hypocritical to bitch about the price. It's FF7 remake - as long as it's still good game I don't mind paying 200 euros for the whole experience.
That's understandable and I would actually like to see the world expanded upon. And the game "looks" great, I actually dig the 3D World they are creating. Would be cool to run around in Midgar like that. I do hope there is an overworld map with airships and shit like the original(can't wait to see how they fuck that one up). It's the episodic bullshit and change of combat that's sorta killing the excitement for me. The battle and materia system of the original is one of my favorites of all time. I havnt heard what they are doing with the materia system yet but to change the battle system so drastically is sort of a blow to the system. I mean, I didn't expect a copy and paste battle system but was hoping it would be similar. There's no way I'm buying this at launch now since it will be in parts. I'll wait till it's actually finished and pick it up then as I do want to play it, I'm just frustrated with some of the direction and choices squeenixs making.
I actually like the combat in Dissidia and Kingdom Hearts so I don't mind if it is more action based. They said it is not suppose to be as fast as those and they want to keep the more strategic combat from the original. It is a bit hard to tell in the video if it is command based. Some stuff like the limit breaks obv would need to be re-worked. If they can add the flash of Dissidia/KH and still keep some form of ATB, that would be awesome.
Your right, its not really clear from the video what the battle system will really be like but i know i don't want kingdom Hearts gameplay in a Final Fantasy VII Remake, let that series have that. The 3Rd ones right around the corner to look forward to, and im sure XV will have more of the "flash of Dissidia". What I want from a Final Fantasy VII Remake is classic Final Fantasy VII gameplay. Period. That's all they had to do. Let those other games have all the new fangled nonsense. Maybe I'm wrong, but I would think, the majority of the fans of the orginal would want the same. Just a super epic, prettier version of the orginal.....released all at the God Damn Same Time!!
FF VIII's dialogue never bothered me. The setting, music, and art style still makes it one of my favorites to replay. I don't get all worked up about the complex, strange plot, I just enjoy the game..a lot.
Yeah, the draw system can break the game, but that isn't necessarily a bad thing. Attaching 100 tornado spells (using the card mod) to Atk-J makes the game much easier and even more enjoyable. I don't play RPGs to be challenged by difficulty. I would rather the game be on the easier side and enjoy the plot/setting.
Oh well we can always just play the original on the playstation.
I don't get what SE hate is with turn based combat. It still could serve a good purpose in modern games. I'd rather have turn based combat than those horrible low frame-rate battles in Lightning returns.
Let's hope DQ11 retains turn based combat....now I will return to my 16 bit RPGs
Oh god, I can see it now.....Final Fantasy VII Season Pass Pre-orders.....Someone just shoot me in the face now so I never have to hear those words!
Fixed.
I just hope i get a Pre Order in for the Square Enix Online Store Only Ultimate Deluxe Limited PS4 Timed Exclusive Special Edition Final Fantasy VII Remake Season Pass before they are all gone and i have to resort to ebay scalpers! That would be a drag...
I picked up the FFVII PC port to replay it with trophies on PS4 and man.....I played for like 16 hours straight even though I have beaten this game so many times...it is so damn good.
Now that I have been playing it since they announced the remake it just pisses me off more and more and more that this is going to be a thing......my dream would be that they DO remake this game and it is just a masterpiece.
Sadly though I have this very very eerie feeling that it is going to cater to current RPG trends (Which has already been shown a bit) and they are going to leave the hardcore fans out to dry.
I understand that turn based combat is a thing of the past in their opinion but they REALLY need to make sure this battle system works.
.....Rant over about that, I really hope they ditch this episodic garbage I wasn't overly worried about the remake after seeing the new footage but this just ruined it for me.
Why can they just not make it a 2-disc game, hell that would be awesome switching discs again!
I don't get it either except that I assume they did it the way they did because people can't sit through a turn based battle without losing interest immediately....
I don't know why it needed a remake in the first place but i agree, all it needed was some FF13+ graphics and I would have bought it. Not a chance now. I bet they could have done a hybrid, more so like FF12 but maybe even had the choice for the player to pick turn based or pick ADHD based. I mean, the people who car about a FF7 remake are the ones that played it orignally. I bet most kids today could care less about it.
they should have just called it FF7-2 and I bet we see micro-transactions. Want that Black Chocobo and don't want to deal with breeding? Pony up $5 bucks and you don't have to.
If you don't like what they're doing with the remake, DON'T BUY IT! If you're interested, BUY IT! Otherwise just play your original PS discs or the enhanced PC port on PS4 which looks great!
I think I have the right to be upset about it. It's something we've been begging Square Enix to do for decades, and I'm not happy with the direction they're taking it. I'm sure you've felt the same way about something in your life, too.
However, the outrage is justified. They're taking a beloved classic and re imagining it to make money. No other reason. There is a good shot this will turn something people love into an abomination. Squareenix has a terrible track record and a lot of us don't like the games they've been putting out recently and don't want what we loved to turn into a cash grab.
Just to mix it up completely, and further upset the apple cart, I'd rather see a modern looking Final Fantasy VI remake.
As much as I want to get behind that idea, they'd just fuck it up. I'd hate to see the legacy of VI tarnished by a half-assed remake. I think about everything I love about that game -- areas like Zozo, the Veldt, the World of Ruin... they give you the framework to let your imagination take over. I'd rather not see those be overhauled.
I'm extremely disappointed in the direction they're going with this.
The battle system has recently been described as being like Dissidia arcade.
I wanted to play "Final Fantasy 7", not this button-mashing bullshit.
You don't 'remake' Pac-Man yet give it a completely different gameplay system. Otherwise it isn't Pac-Man anymore.
I thought SE learned something from the success of Bravely Default, but apparently no. What's funny is almost every other jRPG development house out there HAS figured it out.
Now the graphics and voice-acting, and hell, even the music, appear to be quite good, but as we all know a pretty game doesn't mean a good game. SE has single-handedly proven that over and over again.
And to hear it's going to be episodic. I couldn't help but laugh ... a bitter, jaded laugh.
I think I have the right to be upset about it. It's something we've been begging Square Enix to do for decades, and I'm not happy with the direction they're taking it. I'm sure you've felt the same way about something in your life, too.
Its important to me as well. Yeah I maxxed out the timer on the original too, mastered knights of the round and all that. I just prefer to wait until it actually gets released before I start jumping to conclusions about how terrible its going to be. But I forget this is the internet sometimes, and over-reaction is the norm (not the people in this thread, in general)
In the age of digital distribution, I will never buy the "we had to cut stuff to make it fit" mantra. I was on the fence about this to begin with. Glad they made the decision easy for me.
I feel the exact same way. I was thinking "ya know, I'd buy a remake of FF7". Not now, though. Too many games are released without being finished as it is, and with the shit FF's of the last 2 console gens, I think I'm finally done with the series.
Just to mix it up completely, and further upset the apple cart, I'd rather see a modern looking Final Fantasy VI remake.

It took Square Enix selling 5,000,000 copies worldwide to call Tomb Raider (2013) a success because of how much money this company dumped into graphics and making it pretty. It was a failure for selling well over a million copies in its first week. They were seriously considering not publishing more Tomb Raider games until it became successful as well.
With how much money they're GOING to dump into this game, how many units will they need to sell PER EPISODE before they call this a success? 8 million? 10 million?
This is the stuff that scares me. Today's Square Enix can do no wrong, and for both Hitman and Tomb Raider (2013) they treated gamers like it was our fault that we're not buying their games, instead of the other way around. What if it's not a success and we just don't get the other parts? All of this is possible with this company.
However, the outrage is justified. They're taking a beloved classic and re imagining it to make money. No other reason. There is a good shot this will turn something people love into an abomination. That is the way I see it to, I can just imagine the executive meetings about having to turn profits around.
I think I have the right to be upset about it. It's something we've been begging Square Enix to do for decades, and I'm not happy with the direction they're taking it. I'm sure you've felt the same way about something in your life, too.

Come on, you cant be happy about them making it a multipart series instead of one game. Thats the dumbest idea of heard of from square enix since Dresspheres!
I'm disappointed with the whole damn thing. I wanted the exact same game with updated graphics and cut-scenes but what they are making is totally different and they should stop calling it a remake.
I think naming it remake is a good choice. This is not remastered version, but a remake which means a bit more changes than just remastering the graphics and sounds etc... Other than that, I think they have lost it somewhere in the development and got a bit too carried away of what can and should be done to classic titles...

Milking as much money as possible out of people is just how everything is. To me, personally, as long as the game is good I don't care if its released in that way. Same reason all these movies have the last part be 2 movies. I know 60$ is a lot to some people, but it just isn't to me. If they want to release multiple parts, as long as the game is fun and engaging im in.

I'd pick it up after the fact on some sort of compilation disc. But no way am I'm going the dot hack route.

Its not even about the money! Its the principle of the matter! Its insulting and sloppy. They should of just waited to announce it and complete the entire game before trying to push out what little they have to make money now. Its more of a matter of whats wrong with the game industry now adays. All this season pass bullshit, releasing half finished games and making people pay double to play the entire thing.
I hear what you are saying, but saying its insulting is silly. The gaming industry nowadays is about making as much money as possible, bottom line. The sooner you realize that the more enjoyable it will be for you. This isn't the 80s anymore. I know we like to think they owe us something because of our emotional attatchment to IPs, but they really don't.
Do I wish it was the exact same game only better? Of course.

I enjoy it just fine, I just don't support dumb marketing strategies and I wish others wouldn't either so it would stop.

BUT THAT WAS JUST A FLUKE, RIGHT? I mean Squareenix OBVIOUSLY knows EXACTLY what everyone wants and it CLEARLY isn't what everyone says they want.
I'm actually growing increasingly bitter about all of this. I've really grown to hate squareenix. This is just another straw on the dead camel's back.

Same reason all these movies have the last part be 2 movies. I know 60$ is a lot to some people, but it just isn't to me. If they want to release multiple parts, as long as the game is fun and engaging im in.
Of course.
But it just isn't going to please everyone.

I enjoy it just fine, I just don't support dumb marketing strategies and I wish others wouldn't either so it would stop.
