Batman (The first one) for the NES, horribly underrated.

  • NES Batman is great. It's weird playing the Famicom version after playing the NES version for so many years and hearing the stage 1 and 2 themes switched.

The PAL version is improved though. Maybe not great but still a good game IMO.

Oh, improved how? I beat the NTSC version, but there was very little enjoyment involved.

I didn't think it was that bad.

But I loved the maze-exploration portions of Blaster Master, and it is very similar.

Unfortunately it suffers from the same problem of if you lose your charged up gun you're screwed.

Games like that should "lock in" your weapon charge and just kill you in one hit...

In the NTSC you can't shoot through walls. THis is extremely annoying when you are walking through narrow passages (you can't shoot in front of you because of the wave pattern). In the PAL version this is fixed and  you can shoot through walls.

I also think that the PAL version is a bit more generous woth power-ups.

I really thought I was the only person in the world that actually liked that game! lol

Actually one of my brothers love that game too. Lol!!

Yeah, I've never heard of it being underrated.

I wonder if this is a generational divide between people who saw that movie in the theater and played Batman: The Movie: The Game back when it was released and those who played it later and didn't realize it was a pretty big deal back-in-the-day.

That's what I was thinking. That movie was huge back in the day. Saw it in theaters, bought the game, hell, I still own the collector cups from Taco Bell that promoted the movie. Every time I think about the first batman movie, I'm reminded of cheap taco bell curly churro whatever the fuck those things were and soft tacos.

Not to mention, that music from the game has been stuck in my head for over two decades now!

Dear god I hope you are talking about the arcade version and not the SNES atrocity.

Ha, wow, this movie came out before we actually had Taco Bell where I grew up. Del Taco was our fast food "Mexican" option.
  • I made it up to level 5 (the clocktower) and my kid reset the game while I was making coffee! This game has some pretty tough platforming. I like it for the most part, but I wish the levels were a less linear, with more nooks and crannies secret areas to explore through the wall jumping

The only items you can get are from killing enemies so there is nothing to explore and no reason to explore. That was a weird design choice in an otherwise great game.

At least they should have hid extra lives in the stages. That would have made the game more possible to beat without continuing (only three lives for beating this game is ridiculous). I've only been able to beat it by using a bunch of continues. The Joker is one of the hardest final bosses on the NES.

No worries. I know Batman Forever (SNES version) gets horrible reviews, and it possibly deserves them, but back in the day my brother got it for Christmas and him and I played it to death. I really don't find the game that cryptic or hard at all. I believe you hold select + up to grapple and such, and I don't know why reviewers get so bent out of shape over that.

It had impressive backgrounds and lighting for the time, and it's basically like Mortal Kombat-lite in the form of a side-scrolling beat-em-up. Anyway I thought it was a decent game, but I'd put many other Batman games ahead of it, including Batman Forever: The Arcade Game (which was a decent beat-em-up available on consoles as well), Batman Returns on SNES (decent beat-em-up too), the original NES Batman of course which was quite excellent, Batman Returns on Sega CD (but from the menu, make sure to select driving mode only).
  • I've never played batman forever on the SNES but I have my childhood copy on the genesis and I always enjoyed it as a kid. I played it again recently and its still fun. Maybe the snes one has worse controls?

I agree that I don't consider NES Batman underrated. I think it was well publicized back in the day. It's not talked about as much outside retro gamers like Zeldas, Mario, Sonic and the huge franchises but I would say most here would agree its a fantastic game.

I remember as a kid putting it on my Christmas wish list. The funny thing is I have a vague memory of playing it (it came back to me when I re-purchased it recently) but it was not mixed in with all of my other NES games at my mom's house. My dad and I would go to Play-N-Trade a lot and switch out games for the NES and Genesis since we didn't have a lot of money to buy new games all the time. I bet since the Batman game is so tough we must have traded it in. I am lucky that my mom never threw any of my games out, when I wanted to get back into gaming she had all my stuff in her basement (NES & Genesis consoles and games). The best things she had in her basement was a toploader NES (with 2 toasters) and a CIB Contra Hard Corps (I love that game but would hate to have to buy it at current pricing)
  • Love NES Batman, and what makes it better it's super common. I've raged quit many times playing this.
  • For a second i read the thread title as "horribly overrated" *puts down pitchfork and extinguishes torch*
  • Bah, there was no need to nerf Batman. The game is beatable if you practice enough.
  • True but that joker at the end is super hard.
  • I just picked this up the other day. I plan on playing through it and Batman Returns over Christmas break.

He is, but there are a few tricks to beat him once you know his pattern.

  • I'm still on a mission to beat this sucker

    Good luck.

I've managed the 1cc, but I still want a no-death run. I actually think a no-damage run might be possible (Joker may be the wrench in the gears, though.)

  • Batman on the NES rules. Great graphics, sound, and gameplay!
  • Still have my copy from way back. It's one of my go-to games whenever I want to play some NES, but haven't decided what to play yet. I always land on this.
