  • i guess not to add too much fuel to the fire but to my knowledge technically under gplv2 forgiveness for not following the licence originally is not necessarily automatically granted when they came into compliance

so tl;dr its possible even the cores they could have hypothetically licensed correctly are still in violation. but i get the impression they have been a good faith actor(uh after we called them on it that is...)--to the extent their management will allow(which is to say I don't see them pulling the snes or genesis unless something forces the issue). they released the kernel code when requested which wasn't neccesarily a given(albiet short on documentation).

That would break their illusion.  So much of their talk was about how it wasn't emulators.  Of course the tech people understand they are lying but the general public doesn't.

Of course they could, it would just take money instead of stealing for free.  Emulators are done as college projects all the time, and they didn't even copy the most accurate ones so quality isn't a concern anyways.  All the hard architecture and documentation work has already been done, and by using the database they are limiting compatibility to a subset of the games.  A few paid programmers with a year could easily do all of it.  Or maybe 2x kevtris.

    They did neither

Retro Freak?  Of course it is yet to be seen if they just stole everything too!

-Retro Freak isn't quite like the Retron 5 which is why I chose that word. It embraces the fact that it is an Android box much more than the R5 did. It will certainly be interesting to see if the onboard emulator code was stolen.

-While Hyperkin didn't technically 'beg' forgiveness, they did react with an official statement of remorse once they were found out, which is the way politicians operate these days.

-Even if you feel it's realistic that if they got two developers working for two years on 10 emulators, I doubt they would be able to fully test those emulators for bugs, even if it's just for a subset of games. I did specifically say 'quality' emulators.

-Good point about breaking the illusion. Hyperkin was not upfront about how the Retron 5 would work.
  • Stolen code or not, Retro Freak takes everything that sucked about the Retron5 and made it awesome. It runs ROMs and dumps carts to SD card, plus does Turbo/PCe. Retrode on steroids. Now that I know English menus are a thing, I plan on getting once they're readily available, or at least once the YT reviewers get to test them, and provided they aren't scalper pricing.

And yes Brian, I'll also be getting the AVS for all those unsupported homebrew mappers.
  • As far as HD emulators-in-a-box go, I still prefer a basic softmodded original Xbox with a component cable. I don't have a ton of old cartridges, though, so I can definitely see the appeal of the Retro Freak(and being able to use original controllers). I love the OG Xbox controller, but can't deny the feel of a legit NES one(and I don't feel like shelling out $50+ for an adapter).
  • If youre just going to load ROMs why not get a Raspberry Pi? Or, like I do, just hook my PSP to the TV. That works just fine.

    Because carts.

Right, im the same way. But all the excitement that the retro freak plays ROMs just seams odd since there are already several outlets to do that. I wouldnt expect that thing to be any better at playing carts than any other clone system.

  • Retron 5 new for $75?

Is it worth the hassle even at that price?
