Toad. The quick lifting and digging are super useful, and most of the jumps are still make-able with him. If I'm going through from start to finish there are usually a few stages I'll use Peach though. I never really use the Brothers. Mario's lack of any specialty makes him kind of dull and I dislike Luigi's floaty jumps.
Kinda funny to see so few people play Mario in a game that bears his name. :-p
OP please make this a poll if you're a cool and interesting person like we know you are.

I would also like to see a poll... No, we need a poll for this, NEED IT!
Interesting to see others have picked Mario. He's definately more useful than I give him credit for, but I always had fun NOT picking him. I guess because I felt like I was already winning at the game by not playing as Mario as I was most times forced to in other games, haha.
Now that I'm older though, I can give Mario his credit... he's faster than Luigi & Peach. I just prefer the height of Luigi's and distance of Peach's jumps.
I think we should have a poll here... did I say that already?
As a child I would use either Peach or Luigi, and then as a teenager I discovered how bad Luigi was and switched it to Peach and Toad.
Now, I always use a combination of the four characters. I will start with one and then work through the four using a pattern of sorts, making sure each character gets equal playtime. This is fun for me, as it adds a new challenge to an easy game.
I use Toad in every level. I pick him mainly for the digging strength and speed. I don't even notice his low jumping height anymore. I use the Toad equivalent when playing Doki Doki Panic (I forget which character that is), but the inability to run in that game drives me nuts.

LOL. Now I'll have that mental image whenever I use Peach.

I wonder if it is a fuzzy peach?
And Princess.
I think it would be neat to go through the game four times, one run dedicated to each character.
