Games that should never have went 3D?

  • The 2 Castlevania games on the N64 instantly comes to mind for me. Also, never thought I would say this, but I actually agree with pegboy on this one, games like... well, Castlevania: Dracula X Chronicles that are 3D models on a 2D plane don't really count, atleast to me.
  • I know I'm in the minority, but both Zelda and Mario would qualify for me. I loved the original 2D games, hated the 3D reincarnations/series, and loved the return to the 2D types. I really don't like free roam 3D versions of games (unless it's like a FPS or something like GTA)
  • Yep, Contra.

And Bubsy. Although, it's not as if the 2D Bubsy games were that good, but at least they were playable.
  • By all accounts, Bionic Commando

One series that absolutely benefited from going 3D was F-Zero though. It's not even a contest which is better.

I was confused at first but then I looked it up. I had no idea that a 3D Bionic Commando existed. The more you know!
  • Does Hitler's head explode in glorious 3D?
  • As much as i dont love n64, i must say the 2 castlevanias intrigue me to this day, as they are still fun games amongst their countless 2d games in the series. Even if i hated them, id still defend castlevania in 3d because of lament of innocence.

I vote for bubsy and alundra. 2d a+ and in 3d its f-
  • I think this question is being asked in the wrong way. Should be "which games actually got better with a switch to 3d". At least that is a manageable list unlike what the OP is asking.

And for the record F-Zero does not count and neither does Super Mario Kart. Those games were already 3D, they are just very primitive forms of it. Same with games like Doom and Wolfenstein, which use similar rendering methods.

3D does not mean polygons just like 2D does not mean sprites.
  • Shadowgate. Shadowgate 64 was so disappointing. Why did they wait to release a 3D version on the N64.
  • Zelda, Metroid, Final Fantasy and Mario Bros.
  • I loved Mario 64 when it came out but I find it unplayable today. Also can't stand any 3d iterations of castlevania.

I actually enjoyed the 3d Bionic Commando but the 2d Bionic Commando Rearmed is fucking amazing.
  • The only thing I can think of that hasn't been mentioned are the early 2000's Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles titles. Nothing ever came close to how good their 8-bit and 16-bit counterparts were.

Did you ever try Beyond Shadowgate for Turbo Grafx-CD?

I agree TMNT has never been the same after the 16 bit era.  Guess we are stuck playing TMNT IV and Hyperstone Heist forever.  Which is not really a bad thing.

Came to say this, unfortunately.  Amazing 2D games though!

UGH. God, Earthworm Jim 3D was like my most anticipated N64 game ever, too. Imagine my disappointment in the first 3 minutes. It took a lot of facial muscle to frown that hard.

  • I actually liked castlevania legacy of darkness. I'm not too keen on donkey Kong being 3d, same thing with mario

Nope.  Had a SNES & Genesis at the time, so I wasn't very interested in a 3rd console. I think I played the NES version on my brothers NES console after the SNES was released.

  • So I just played Excitebike 64 with my friend this weekend. Holy crap, it is still awesome. Just watching the replays of tracks make everything worthwhile. We don't really "race", but we try to pull off insane stunts on small hills, try to glitch the game, fly off our bikes as soon as we hit Canyon Chasm. All the fun things.

Seriously, get 4 people playing a track together and watch the replays of each racer when you complete a race.
  • I wouldn't be surprised if Excitebike 3d was better than the original, because the original game was just horrible. It's one of those games people say is good but haven't played in 20 years, so they don't realize how boring and empty the game really is. There is ZERO depth to it.
  • I have yet to find a 3D Sonic game that I've enjoyed.

On the flip side, it's hard to find a 2D Sonic game that I don't enjoy (maybe Sonic IV).

Sonic Generations on PS3 is fantastic, one of the best 3D Sonic games in my opinion. So I recommend giving that a try if you haven't yet. I also enjoyed Sonic Adventure 2 and Sonic Heroes. But yeah Sonic's 3D games have mostly been terrible.

  • Excitebike 64 rocks. Might be my favorite 64 game. I have spent hour with my buddies just on the hill climb alone as well as beating the regular game multiple times and messing around with the trick contest.

Sonic Colors is also solid. I also liked Adventure, but not as much as Adventure 2.

Couldn't get into either Sonic Adventure or Sonic Colors.  Still need to try Generations, but at the end of the day, if I want to play Sonic, I'm always going to go to the 16 bit Genesis versions.

I've heard good things about Colors but never played it. I've played bits and pieces of all the other 3D Sonics except Colors and Sonic (2006) because the latter is supposedly atrocious. I thought Adventure was just okay, but I played Adventure 2 first and the first one just felt so disorganized to me. I often had no idea where to go, the camera was very glitchy, and I only cared about half of the characters. But Adventure 2 was almost entirely good. Especially the Chao Garden!

That's fair. I didn't Big the Cat or E-102 Gamma levels, which is a big part of those games. I will also say that Colors isn't as good as Generations.

It's worth nothing that the Colors and Generations on the DS and 3DS are also great. I also can't really think of any 2D sonic games that I didn't enjoy.

Fair enough. Most of the 2D Sonics were well made. I think out of all the 3D games, I'd recommend Generations the most to someone who doesn't like 3D Sonic. It's half 2D half 3D with old levels and remixed levels. It's probably my favorite Sonic game since Sonic & Knuckles.
  • My version of Sonic Colors is for the Wii. I had no real desire to try it on a different system.

I think it has a lot to do with what you grew up with. I played a ton of 2D sonic games as a kid, so the 3D games just don't do much for me. I would be willing to bet that a younger person who grew up with the 3D games probably wouldn't enjoy the 2D versions very much.

Gamma and Big are the two characters in Adventure I hated playing as, especially Big the Cat... ugh. Generations was a fantastic game for a Sonic game, and it really makes you wonder why they can't make more new Sonic games like that. I can't think of any 2D Sonic game I didn't like either, though I also didn't play the DS version of Colors, but every 2D Sonic I've played has been solid including spinoffs like Knuckles Chaotix.
