On the flip side, it's hard to find a 2D Sonic game that I don't enjoy (maybe Sonic IV).

Sonic Generations on PS3 is fantastic, one of the best 3D Sonic games in my opinion. So I recommend giving that a try if you haven't yet. I also enjoyed Sonic Adventure 2 and Sonic Heroes. But yeah Sonic's 3D games have mostly been terrible.

Sonic Colors is also solid. I also liked Adventure, but not as much as Adventure 2.

Couldn't get into either Sonic Adventure or Sonic Colors.  Still need to try Generations, but at the end of the day, if I want to play Sonic, I'm always going to go to the 16 bit Genesis versions.

Fair enough. Most of the 2D Sonics were well made. I think out of all the 3D games, I'd recommend Generations the most to someone who doesn't like 3D Sonic. It's half 2D half 3D with old levels and remixed levels. It's probably my favorite Sonic game since Sonic & Knuckles.

Now you have me wondering what my favorite Sonic game is.  Sonic and Knuckles is awesome, but I would probably have to vote for Sonic 2 since I have the most memories with it and it's the version I go back to most often.  S&K would be a clost second.  I'm also one of the unusual guys who absolutely loves Sonic Spinball.

I think it has a lot to do with what you grew up with. I played a ton of 2D sonic games as a kid, so the 3D games just don't do much for me. I would be willing to bet that a younger person who grew up with the 3D games probably wouldn't enjoy the 2D versions very much.

I grew up playing Sonic 2 in school and the Sonic Game Gear games. My first real 3D "Sonic" experience was with SA2B on the GC, which I love. After that, I've slowly gone back and played the others, and I think I enjoy 2D and 3D Sonic about equally.

I thought Adventure was just okay, but I played Adventure 2 first and the first one just felt so disorganized to me. I often had no idea where to go, the camera was very glitchy, and I only cared about half of the characters. But Adventure 2 was almost entirely good. Especially the Chao Garden!

Sonic 2006 is flat out awful. My GF got it for PS3 and we spent hours trying to first get to levels, and then get through the first level. It's a glitchy, incoherent mess with extremely touchy controls. When you're using tails, it's almost as bad as trying to pilot a remote control helicoptor in wind. We couldn't beat the first level, although, people's talking animations are hilarious.

It's worth nothing that the Colors and Generations on the DS and 3DS are also great. I also can't really think of any 2D sonic games that I didn't enjoy.

Gamma and Big are the two characters in Adventure I hated playing as, especially Big the Cat... ugh. Generations was a fantastic game for a Sonic game, and it really makes you wonder why they can't make more new Sonic games like that. I can't think of any 2D Sonic game I didn't like either, though I also didn't play the DS version of Colors, but every 2D Sonic I've played has been solid including spinoffs like Knuckles Chaotix.

Have you tried Sonic IV yet?  I'm not aware of a physical version, so I have the digital verson of Episode I and II on my OUYA.  I like that they are 2D, but they just don't have the same feel as the old 16 bit Genesis versions.

Nice, you can't go wrong with either Sonic 2 or S&K. I also like Sonic Spinball though I don't know if I ever finished it. If I remember, it was pretty hard. Sonic 3 is my favorite but of course it's technically only half a game :-P But after Sonic 1-3 and S&K, I'd say Generations is my 5th favorite.

There is no physical version as far as I know. I've played Sonic 4 and thought they were pretty good, but probably my least favorites of all the 2D Sonics. But still solid games. Ep 2 is a bit better than Ep 1. Sonic was way too floaty in Ep 1.
