Never beat this game, but man do I love it. The cutscene music is one of my most favorites.
Speaking of music, who here has started the game, and heard the long note at the beginning of the title screen and thought that the game locked up? I know I did.
The boss before the Joker is mindless if you basically just stay where you are.
He's the easiest boss aside from Killer Moth (the first boss.) My strategy is to jump immediately after he appears and does his little pose. That causes him to jump back and you have a second to move into position to take him out. Stay on the far left side, leap over his fireball and immediately throw a batarang at the top of the jump. He'll jump into it (and it'll likely hit him twice, as it goes right back to Batman.) If he starts throwing punches, they won't touch you if you're far enough left. I usually wait a second as he is punching and then hit him with one (or more) batarangs. Throw too early and he will jump out of the way. He'll also toss a fireball as he jumps back, so be ready to leap. 50 or so batarangs usually takes him out, it just takes a bit of patience. Keep your head and you'll even avoid damage.
Joker's gun takes three health away for every hit. It's the most powerful hazard in the game, but it has a blind spot right in front of the muzzle.
I was going to say, basically as long as you're patient- you'll beat the boss before the Joker.
On my first play through, I probably went through about 18 lives before I beat the Joker.
2nd playthrough I was able to get him on my 3rd life.
This game was a lot of fun... gonna track down the manual just for completions sake!
Yeah, and it's one of the few flaws in the game in that the points don't mean anything. There are no extra lives, and you can only see your score if you pause the game. You don't even get a final score screen. I think the only way to see your final score is if you beat the Joker, but pause before you stand over him (it won't go to the ending cut scene until you stand by him.)
Even if you were going for a final score, you can grind for Bs, so someone beating the game quickly on one life can actually get a lower score than someone maxing out continues.

That's a flaw caused by Hiroshi Yamauchi. He wasn't a gamer but he thought he knew what gamers wanted and had final say on approving pretty much every licensed game. Game developers would talk about how he looked at their RPG or strategy game for 5 seconds and then denied it saying something like "Users like scores. Put in a scoring system." Sooooo many games had useless score counters to please Yamauchi.

So...many...times!
Bahahaha. Same. I remember buying my cart about 6 years ago and testing it, shutting the system off, re-trying, etc. Cause of that noise.
Then when I went to go play through it the other day, I thought something was freezing again.
Agreed. That soundtrack is simply amazing. Sunsoft's did so many things right with this game. I sure hope no one avoided it expecting a crappy game which only sold because of the movie license. This is a game I had to borrow when I was a child but I got all the way to Joker. I first beat it about 13 years ago but I already had all the same nostalgia for it as the games I turned inside out and beat every which way and the music was a huge part of the reason why (same goes for Ninja Gaiden).
Awesome game! Saw this thread and did a play through last night and today. Very challenging at times but overall made extremely well. Did anyone notice the difference between the movie and game ending? In the movie they fight and the Joker falls to his death as a result of Batman hooking his ankle to the statue, but in the game Batman whoops him, tells him he is the one that will dance with the devil in the pale moonlight, and straight up throws him off the side of the bell tower! Pretty cold blooded!
The Batman Beta version, which has different cut scenes and other minor changes, doesn't have the Joker boss fight (Firebug is the final boss.) Batman sneaks up on Joker in his office and punches him out for the final scene.
I totally didn't think I was going to do a no-death run.
I actually restarted the game because I lost a life in the sewer section in a really dumb way. It wasn't because I was trying to no death it, but I was playing so poorly I felt the need to start the whole game over. Second run through I'm doing better, until I get to level five. On the ascent to the boss fight, I end up losing three bars on the claw on the left side, and three more bars at the last jump across (fell into the hole and had a heck of a time getting out.)
So I go into Firebug with only two bars. I considered just dying intentionally and fighting him with the second life just so I could go into Joker with full health, but then I thought, "that's lame, plus you've beaten Firebug with no damage before." I beat him without taking a hit, but there were a couple of close calls. I fight Joker with just six bars, and manage to stick to him like glue. Didn't get hit with his gun, but did take four hits from the lightning. Two bars left and he falls over, and I sit there, stunned. Actually had to pause the game to make sure I still had all my lives.
Still going to keep playing to see if I can do it consistently, and because I love it.
Side note about the music, I love it because it's not taken from the movie or any other Batman show that I know of, but still sounds like Batman music.
Damn. I came SO CLOSE to single credit clearing this beast on my last run through. I used one continue before the final stage, and then beat the last stage, Firebug and the Joker without dying. Maybe I got lucky.
This game really does get easier the more you practice.
I think the trick to the Joker is don't waste time ducking when punching. Stand and keep punching him as fast as possible and he'll go down.

That playthrough sounds like it was epic! Agreed on the music.
And now I got to Joker on the last life of my first continue and then beat him on my next continue.
I think if I could manage to get to Firebug with at least two lives and without getting a game over I could finally 1cc this.
EDIT: I made it to Firebug with all three lives, died once on him, and then died twice at the Joker. CRAP. But I'm getting so close to a 1cc or no death run.

Just managed my first no-death run of this sucker. Holy cow, though, it wasn't easy. I'm still out of breath.
That's a tough feat for sure. I always die at least once before the joker and there's no guarantee I'll beat him first try either. Congrats.
