    Ninja Gaiden!

I've finally gotten to the point where I can make it past all three more often than not. It still seems like Jaquio is far tougher than the Masked Devil and the Demon.

Jaquio is arguably the toughest final boss in the entire trilogy.  "Ninja Gaiden III" has the easiest final bosses once you know the patterns, except for the lightning during Clancy's first form sometimes being hard to dodge.

  • This happened to me earlier tonight. In Double Dragon I got all the way to the final room with both my lives, only to get my ass handed to me. It's not too big of a deal because I don't have any trouble getting to the end of Double Dragon. I do however rarely if ever get there without dying at least once.
  • This thread is a good read.

Getting all the way through a game (with no save states) and getting your ass kicked by the boss is brutal.

I've got another one to add to the list as of yesterday: Pocky & Rocky. The last level/boss is horrendous. I made it to the final boss a few times but got my ass handed to me pretty swiftly. I continued probably a dozen times... not getting much closer. I almost left the system on overnight to try it again today but I just shut it off. I look forward to playing it again.
  • This has happened to me several times. The most recent example is the final boss of classic mode in smash Wii u on difficulty 9.0. That boss fight is brutal. First you fight crazy & master hand, then master core with his 4 forms, and finally traverse the maze where you destroy the many cores inside. The maze is crazy because after fighting his other forms, you will most likely be down to only 1 life left. The walls of the maze are covered with acid which is an instant kill if you have more than 100% damage. After many, many tries, I beat classic on 9.0 with Link. I've been trying to complete all the challenges in the game. Right now I only have 15 left.
  • A buddy and I played a lot of Jackal in college. One night we got to the final boss and after we thought we beat it, we spiked our controllers into the couch and celebrated only to find the boss has a second form. That thing annihilated us. We learned a valuable lesson that day. Only celebrate when the credits roll...

Yeah, totally.... Whenever I'm fighting a boss now I'm like "I got him! Okay, did I get him? Is he dead? Maybe he'll come back" still clutching controller.

    Dr. Wily loves that shit.

  • Shao Kahn, plenty of times
  • I know this wasn't a last boss but I remember one time playing FFX or FFX-2 and played for a solid 12-15 hours straight without a save and then got triple petrified from those assholes that are a big piece of rock with bones all in them......

Plus countless other times on RPGs where manual saves were required before the auto-save feature became popular.
  • Double post.

How does that compare to the rat race in Battletoads glitching out and being forced to reset?

Man I don't even want to talk about that......Battletoads? Rat Race? I don't know what these things are.

  • Ultima 4: Quest of the Avatar for NES. This game doesn't really have a final boss (although the last fight in the game is against the other 7 main characters), but is beaten by answering a series of questions and then reading the codex book. Way back in 1991, I reached the final room for the first time, and was walking up to the book when BAM. The power goes out. When it comes back, all of my saved games were erased! It took me another 10 years to get around to playing through that damn game again........this time using save states!

Dude, I'd be infinitely more pissed at spending 12-15 hours straight on a game and losing progress (if I read that right).

At least in Battletoads, you're back to where you are in 20 minutes or so.
  • Tomb Raider for PS1, my Dad and I spent a year playing through it when it was brand new and at the final save point we saved with hardly any health and no health packs left. As hard as we tried, the boss was impossible to defeat. We ended up giving up alltogether, since then I've started new save files and still never beat the game.

It was a different feeling that is for sure......I remember playing FF and just staring at the screen going .....the fuck....? Like I couldn't even grasp it where as in Battletoads I wanted to throw the cartridge out the fucking window ahahhahahah

  • Shadow of the NInja, Captain Skyhawk, Double Dragon 1+2+3, TMNT 2+3 and Bayou Billy come to mind (all for NES).

    Sonic 2 for Mega Drive.
