    I've been thinking over this observation for the last day, and at first I kind of agreed. However, I think that they definitely did Locke's quest right. Even though you are forced to backtrack, everything is different. His is also very narrative driven, and less battle focused like the rest (which as a kid bugged me, but now I really appreciate it). You also have to literally back-track, reversing the exact route you came through before.

    Terra/Edgar/Banon's quest does feel less substantial than the rest, I have to agree with you on that.

    Anyways, just thought I'd share my thoughts on the matter. Thanks for bringing it up.

    I think I'm on my way to Zozo next?  Is there a way to get Shadow to rejoin you now or does he rejoin later?

    You will be prompted to wait for shadow or to not.

    Trust us and just choose wait.

    I disagree. The first time you play through it, you should not know about this and other moments. Makes the game feel more textured and gritty, and real.

    Waiting is for replays.

  • phoenix down the train....dont know if this works in all versions of the SNES but in mine it does 9999 damage and is a one shot kill. The magic tower is also a fantastic way to level espers. I beat the game at lvl 80 with nothing more than the chainsaw, air knife and some well placed critical hits. Edgar, locke, terra and sabin if im not mistaken.

    Wait for shadow......dont question this just DO IT!. Also anyone else find gau useless? i used the hunting ground as a way to gain money, and dinosaur island with xzone as a way to level quickly. Equip gear to prevent pincer attacks and your golden. Save after each battle, you will understand why later. The two extra characters i almost never used though. I pretty much stuck with the same characters through out the game.

    Did you end up finishing it Fox? Any further thoughts on the game?

    I beat Zozo, the random battles there are really tough and annoying.  Turns out I could have gotten Shadow and done a bunch of side stuff before that, so I prob need to go back and do that if it isn't too late.

    Anyway a bunch of fall releases like Battlefront came out and most of the my gaming time went to that.  Maybe its time I get back into some SNES stuff.  Thanks for reminding me.

    Shadow only shows up for the Sabin scenario until about halfway through the game. The only thing that is really missable is Mog's dance "Water Rondo" as you have to redo that entire Vedlt underwater section again, then backtrack to the Vedlt (or the mountain, wherever you parked your airship), as well as Gau's rages, but who cares about Gau?

    I usually never use blue mages (Gaus class) I just find it kind of tedious to have to gather all of their skills from enemies to be honest.

    FFVII kind of did it best with Enemy Skill materia.

    Strago is more the strict Blue Mage class character, unless I've missed something. I never use them either, though they appeal to me. Seems like he should appear earlier in the game in order to get the player interested in collecting spells for them. Gau is like a blue mage on constant berserk.

    Agreed about the materia system too! It worked amazingly, in a similar way to how the job classes work in several games in the series (FF III, FF V, FFTA).

    When it comes to RPGs I am all about class customization which is why III, V and VII are really king shits to me (VIII's junction system was kind of .....ehh...)

    I think VI really gets overrated in that department because your characters are a set class and you really have no control over them which kind of sucks, the story really holds that game together more than anything.

    You are right about Strago too though he is more like the stereotypical Blue Mage.

    ....

    I've been searching for a way to do both, tell a good story and allow for a lot of customization, but it is a difficult balance to achieve. FFVII seemed to do this fairly well, and some of the games that differentiate "Heroes" from recruitable soldiers are decent (FFL III, FFT).

    Customization really draws one in (a certain type of player at least), but the Esper mechanic just didn't feel like enough. Boosting stats with Espers was kind of a step in the right direction, but only one of them really makes a difference. I even found on this play through that I had less attachment to the characters, and kept finding faults with the story itself, particularly in the sections where the player has more control over how things go. But I don't want to reveal too much for Fox, it is definitely an experiential game, and the first time(s) through are the best (don't use a guide, make some mistakes!).

  • After you've played through Final Fantasy VI many multiple times, you start looking for interesting things to do. One of those is Gau and his rages.

    I've collected every single rage several times over, but it's the experimenting with those rages that I find interesting.

    So ... who cares about Gau? Seasoned veterans who are playing through the game for the 30th time on rereleases for like Android or Steam, that's who

    Here's a frikkin' quick guide I wrote on getting all the Rages, and which Rages are good --

    (START) ->

    Gau starts with this Rage.

    (ELUSIVE) ->

    Either 1/16 chance of encountering, can only encounter in a certain room or obscure area, is somewhat easy to miss and you can never get it again, or would otherwise be a pain to get.

    (1-6) ->

    What 'tier' I have put these monsters in. This doesn't mean one Rage is better than another; I am simply trying to label which are early, mid, and late-game Rages.

    * ->

    IMO, a pretty good Rage to use, especially at the earliest point in the game you can get it.

    x ->

    IMO, nothing worth stealing, morphing, or otherwise obtaining from this monster by the endgame.

    /*

    Enemies that have Rages, but don't appear on the Veldt (bug)

    Siegfried (Blank spot between Trilobiter and Nautiloid on Page 4)

    Chupon (First blank spot on Page 5, before Pipsqueak)

    Allo Ver (Blank spot between StillGoing and Phase on Page 12)

    /*

    Enemies that do not have a Rage, but appear on the Veldt anyway (so jumping at them is a waste)

    I have played through VI many times as well and have gathered all of Gau's rage attacks on one of my playthroughs but like I said.....just don't like those types of classes but do find it interesting.

    I just perfer the way VII went about it better with the manipulate & enemy skill materias and it isn't a deligated task to one specific character.

    **I do not want to de-rail this into another VI vs VII thread everyone I know there is waaaaay too many of those**
  • ^That's cool, but that wasn't directed at you so much as the general consensus

    Gau has his uses in FF6, especially for those of us who don't get off X-Zoning everything in sight or using Offering/Gem Box tactics anymore. It's a great character to use if you're looking for a new kind of challenge in the game.

    I don't use those tactics and still hate Gau

    The only real use I can see him for is learning Strago's lores quicker. Past that, his stats can be built the same as everyone else and lacks a controllable attack. Him and Umaro aren't necessary for the game or story at all IMO. At least in terms of playable characters.

    It's alright man I didn't take it personal.

    Blue magic......OMG i only got strago and relm to say i had all the characters. FF8 was such crap in the junction system only because the only way to really make something maxed out was to a.) get 99 of a magic give or take and b.) get high level magics to junction them with.

    I loved 6 simply for the storyline. I grew up with this game, i own it on multiple platforms and to this day is still the reason i cringe when i see the final battle with kefka.....oh those poor poor controllers whos only crime was being present during a rage quit session. they met the fate of the wall test.
  • I've been replaying this one myself for the first time in a few years and just got off the train and met up with Gau. Great tip about using a Phoenix Down on the train, I never knew that, worked on my copy.

    I'm with you there, I swear on every one of my play throughs when everyone is lvl 60+ gau is just sitting in the airship at level 35 or so. What a useless character lol.

    Also to touch on Strago, he has some AMAZING lores to learn and great mana costs. Problem is if you want every single one you need to have him face 2 of the 3 pre-last bosses, meaning you need to go through the tower twice so he can be on two different teams...

    It is a classic strategy that is for sure, I always use it against the undead boss in the Cave of the Gi in FF7 to.

    Same goes for using high Cure spells against zombies/undead class monsters.

    Really? Hmm, I didn't know that! The most I ever did with Strago was learn Grand Train and called it a day By the time I get to the final dungeon, I have 1 party teams that are invincible, so I never bother leveling up/building up more than 3 characters (usually 2 and use Mog + Moogle Charm). Last battle I fight with Terra, spam Merton, and watch as Kefta crumbles while I'm healing 9999 each attack lol
