So happy to see the love for B.O.B. Very enjoyable little game. It feels a lot like what Doom might be if it got made into a kiddified 2D scrolling platform blaster. Right down to the "3 worlds" and "punch" and "BFG" weapons.
Haven't seen anyone mention either Rocky Rodent (hard as hell though) or First Samurai. The latter is an Amiga port I believe, and has a unique look and vibe as far as SNES titles go. The latter is a typical mascot cash-in from the early-mid '90s that has its moments.
Huge fan of True Lies and Blackthorne, neither of which gets enough credit, particularly True Lies.
And on the import/fan translation side, Guman's Proof is perhaps the best "unknown" SNES game out there. Wait, scratch that. It's second to "BS Out of Bounds Golf" which was never released but absolutely devious fun with 4 players. You can knock your opponents' balls out of bounds and cost them dearly. It's cutthroat competition at its finest.
You specifically calling B.O.B. a "platformer Doom" in another thread is what got me to try it in the first place, and I feel like I should thank you. I always meant to play that game as a kid, and I absolutely loved it when I did - the graphics are fun, the weapons are always useful, the levels are huge but not overwhelming, and it's just a fantastic experience overall. Good call, Steve, and I wholeheartedly endorse your endorsement of this product.
Heh, you're welcome. I'm glad to help spread the word on B.O.B. I have fond memories of it as I remember seeing it on the shelf all the time back in 1993 but never got around to rent it. Finally, in the summer of 2006 I sat down with it and had an absolute blast with it. Although the controls can be a bit stiff, I soon adjusted and it was pretty well designed, overall. A tough game -- the sort where you progress a little more, die, learn from your mistakes and rinse and repeat. Very satisfying game to devote a weekend or two to. I've also noticed that whenever B.O.B. is recommended, most people walk away happy that they played it. That's a sign that it's a solid game when the majority of people are glad to have played it as opposed to not.
I love giving it the "Doom 2D kiddy platformer" speech because that's always what the game has struck me as. If you love Doom and you love platformers, you'll probably get a kick out of B.O.B.
Did anyone mention Lagoon? That, in my opinion, is a fun little action RPG. You can find it CIB for less than $30 on ebay, so maybe cheaper elsewhere.
Never played it myself, though a friend rented it a few times back in the day and seemed to think it was fun. I always recall people talking about the ridiculously short reach of the main character's weapon.
