One of a kind Donkey Kong plush prototype

A few years ago, I worked on a line of Nintendo plushes. The licensing deal never went through but we got some prototypes. This is one of them. He flips inside outinto a rubber barrel. I've fallen on hard times and I may put up to sell. Anyone have a clue how much they think it would go for?

  • If it's truly one of a kind then there is only one way to find out it's value. AUCTION TIME!
  • Yup, auction would be the only way to know since its never been sold/available. Love to see more pics!
  • Some more pics. I have drawings of the Link plush somewhere. Could of been a great line. But the execs ruin everything with their greed.
  • The more paperwork you have on this the better you will be. One of a kind items like this really improve their value with substantial provenance. Cool piece!
  • I wouldnt auction something like this. Would need big time exposure to actually gsin good traction. Auction would only tell you what its worth to the people that actually discover the listing in a short window of time. Id put a buy it now and best offer on it. And promote it around forums.
  • well, how would he know what BIN to set? too low and he leaves money on the table, too high and he turns people off. I don't think the auction is a bad idea (esp since he needs the money now and won't have the patience for waiting for the right buyer with the high BIN route).

But your points about promoting it a ton are spot on! He's off to a good start by posting it here but should also do atari age and any other gaming forum he can think of. Good luck OP
  • Welcome...
  • OP- you should also post to toy collector forums. Toy collectors will be very interested in prototypes of toys like this; its a bit of a crossover item.

I'll post this on a toy facebook group I'm a part of for you. I can think of at least one guy (hello Matt ) who will be interested.
  • Prototypes of bigger action figure lines don't even go for as much as you would think, so things like this are hard to price.

Certainly not in the $1,000s if that is what people are thinking, maybe (most likely) not even in the $100s
  • OP - you should also clarify WHEN this is from (time frame will make a difference) and provide whatever documents you can to prove the time period. I'm not expert enough on the various way DK looked thru the years to say other than its obviously 90s or later.

Well.   Off the cuff my gut was at least a hundred  and no more than three but I just don't know for sure.   You collect toys?  Your gut?   If you are saying it wouldn't crack 100 which is how I interpret your comments, I have to think its worth more than that?

I buy, collect, sell toys as well as games; so I'm pretty well versed on the cross over world of the two.

Also dealing in a lot of rare "one off" or extremely hard to come by Nintendo/Sega related items things (outside of games) don't go for what you'd think. I would venture to say this is a $75 to $200 item, $300 is pushing it.
  • I think people would be interested in the Link drawings. Zelda merch is hot.
  • Maybe I missed this, but are there any documentation etc. to go along with the Plush? That would help value as well.
  • Worked on this in 2011. I also have a Mario and Peach plush that flip inside out. Mario into a green pipe and princess into a tower. They look terrible though. Donkey Kong was the best because I worked with the factory to get it perfect. I was really pushing for the line to go into production. Unofrtunetly, the toy industry is run by people who've never played with a toy in their life.

Speaking of which, when do I get my mustache ride?
  • I second the Buy It Now or best offer idea. Sell all three as a set. Write a real thorough explanation, with plenty of pics, and any documentation you can dig up.

Set BIN kind of high and see what offers you get. I'm assuming you have bills, and 30 days is just one bill cycle, so a 29 Day listing would be perfect. That way it doesn't get sold for super cheap and then regret getting rid of them.
  • It also hadn't been mentioned that I saw buy writing up the story and documenting the objects is great but going the extra step to get the documentation notarized would be even better.
  • I don't even collect plushes or toys, and I would definitely throw $100 at it. It's an awesome item. Good luck with the sale OP.
  • Its not just nintendo its donkey kong! Huge cult Following, plus the inside out idea is really unique when you get bored of donkey kong you turn it into a barrel.
