Anyone here collect for Master System?

Just thought I'd ask.  In my childhood, I had seriously never heard of the SMS at all.  Nobody in my town owned one.  When Genesis (Mega Drive for foreigners) came out, I thought it was this new original system by a company named Sega.  I don't think it was until like maybe a few years ago when I heard of SMS and found out just what the heck this thing was.

I do like some Genesis games and have been looking at Master System, though I don't know.  Anyone here collect for it or enjoy it?

  • I too thoought Genesis was the first system for Sega until recently.  About 7 years ago my friend told me of an 8-bit Sega system.  I said yeah right.  I had never seen or heard of it as a child.  All my friends had Genesis' or NES.  Then about 3 years ago, I was going through a burned out house, for work.  There, in the burned out rubble, was this wierd looking game system.  I picked it up, and it was the mythical 8-bit Sega system!  It was actually in perfect shape, with the zapper, 2 spoerts "ball" controllers, and about 9 CIB games.  I took it all and did some research online.  I showed my friend, and of course he said "I told you so"!
  • I collect Sega Master games, I find the games for the system are for the most part pretty fun. its the same as NES theres some great games and some bad games for it. Also there are not as many games made for it so getting the whole set isn't too difficult to complete.

That is, until you start looking for Buster Douglas Boxing and a US version Sonic... Believe it or not, I actually had a Buster Douglas Boxing, with case (no manual)...ended up trading it for a Flintstones: Surprise at Dinosaur Peak loose cart. And American copies of Sonic...the last one CIB on eBay went for a fluke price of about $35, if I remember right...the previous few CIBs went upwards of $150 (I think one actually ended just a little over or a little under $300).

As for whether a Master System collection exists here...I have a few Master System games in my collection, mostly shmups. I have a small stash of other Master System games up for trade, as well...
  • You people know about the Sega Pico learning system?

  • At least a few of us do, myself included image . Never came across one of those around here at the flea markets, yard sales, etc., though.
  • I actually have a CIB Pico. Scored it about a year or so ago from Ebaydot on GameTZ. He's since been banned for being a troll on the forums...it's too bad, I kinda liked the guy. Anyway, I knew about the SMS when I was a kid because my cousin had one. Safari Hunt > Duck Hunt any day of the week. Also, most people don't really care about the US Sonic...the only difference between the US and European releases was simply a sticker on the back. That's why the price kinda dropped - most SMS collectors seem to not really give a shit about a little sticker that can be (relatively) easily faked.
  • PS - I want those ball controllers image

I ended up selling all my SMS stuff.image
  • I have a complete Sega Master System collection. All my games are boxed... I need about 30 manuals or something for it to be 100% CIB, but I don't really care. I was never actively collecting for it, I just ended up with a complete boxed collection somehow, lol. All of my games are US, except for the Sonic, which is European, which most people have. For those of you who don't know, the only difference between a US and a Euro PAL Sonic is a UPC code sticker on the back of the box. You can play NTSC Master System games on a PAL console, and vice-versa.

Thats most of them. There's about 30 more that don't fit on that awkwardly placed shelf that I have them in.
  • i just started collecting SMS games, mainly because i went to my local flea market and scored this beautiful SMS System with hooks ups controllers gun, and everything for $25.00............. none of the plastic film was even removed from the console or controllers, so when i peeled it off it looked brand new!!! i was thrilled!

Then about 2 weeks ago i went to my local flea market dealer and saw he got some CIB SMS games in. Well dug through his box of SMS games and blam a pristine Mint CIB James buster douglas boxing CIB and mint caught my eye. Anyways ended up walking away with wonderboy 3, spiderman, and Buster douglas boxing all three mint and CIB for $5.00 each. So add that to my other like 15 SMS games and it got me hooked lol. I figured i got one of the toughest ones to get outta the way so why not collect for it. LOL plus its really a neat system. Check out their version of rampage, just like the NES's but with a new character!

    Nice collection jumpman :-)
  • I'm about half way to a complete set. Still need Buster and sonic tho. Nice pick up on the Buster, Parpunk. Something bout SMS I really like, not sure why.

    Nice collection Jumpman!
  • I actually "officially" got all the games today. I've been saying that I have a complete boxed collection, when really I still needed one game (Michael Jackson's Moonwalker). It's not even that hard of a game to find, its just I was so focused on NES and N64. Here's a pic. image
  • Nice. I started collecting sealed ones for a little while and got about 1/3 of the library, but I'm not going after the rest. I have too much stuff taking up room already.
  • Wow Will, that looks really nice! Would you mind sending me a list real fast of all the US master system games?
  • It's right on dp...

  • There must be a hell of a lot more European releases for the SMS, I'm up to about 130 and I think there are ~280 out there.
Heres how my sms collection looked about 5 mins ago:
  • I have some games for the master that are for sale.  I'll give someone a real good deal on the.  let me know...Nothing rare.
  • I always felt that SMS games looked nicer than NES games. Like Rocky and Space harrier. You can't go wrong with Adventure Island and Altered beast.
  • Congrats jumpman on the full collection! I've often been tempted to collect for this system and a few others but so afraid my focus will get off the NES image
  • I actually did it WHILE collecting for the NES. I got most of the library in one shot a few years ago for pretty cheap, and I've just been picking up the final 40 or so copies that I needed here and there.
