Laugh at my misfortune...
This story is so ridiculous, but I figured most people would laugh, especially considering how my friends have reacted.
Long story short, my company hosted it's first annual golf tournament
this past Thursday and I've NEVER golfed before. I had absolutely no
desire to play, but my boss and colleagues kept begging me and even
offered to pay my $50 registration fee and provide clubs. I figured,
hey what's the worst that could go wrong, I don't have any fun? Boy was
I wrong...
So it's Thursday 8AM and the golf course is FLOODED, standing water
everywhere but there's no rain falling. Even the groundskeeper says
that "This is the worst conditions I've allowed play in the 30 years
I've been here." He only allowed play because it was a scheduled
tournament and apparently the course needed the money bad.
Anyways our team (4 players) ride out to the first hole and I'm about
to tee off. I'm not wearing proper shoes, but who cares. I take my
warm-up swings and get ready. Step up to the tee and swing... barely
make contact, hear my knee crack pop and make all sorts of
gut-wrenching sounds and down I go. I get carted off by the
groundskeeper and probably have the shortest golf career out of anyone
ever, one full swing and a ball that travelled about 12 inches.
Fast forward to Friday, and luckily I'm only diagnosed with a
dislocated kneecap which should have much less healing time than a torn
ligament. He drained about 50 ccs of blood/fluid out of my knee and I
instantly went from unable to walk without crutches to able to limp
around with minor pain. Now it's Monday and I'm able to walk pretty
well with the brace and even plan on going to the gym today (upper body
obviously).
Before it was drained, sitting on the doc's table:

All of my friends have had lots of jokes, but whatever I'm just glad I
didn't ruin my whole summer with an ACL tear or anything. Hopefully
I'll be back to action in no time even though I've already had people
tell me I should give up sports and basketball. No damn golf injury is going to sideline me for long.

Injuries suck..
And ALWAYS wear golf spikes. Your body is producing a tremendous amount of torque when you're coiled up to take a swing.
I hope you recover quickly. Knee injuries are terrible.
Seriously, though...basketball is almost the worst thing guys in our age bracket can do to their bodies.

True, but basketball is usually more tough on the ankles than knees. I'm also familiar with right knee injuries in the past, I've sprained my MCL twice (football age 14, basketball age 19).
I can't be afraid of "what ifs" though, I'll be back on the court ASAP at least shooting around with light dribbling. Basketball is life to me and is BY FAR my favorite thing to do, better than gaming, better than eating pizza, and at least tied with having sex. Maybe when I have a kid my priorities would change but I honestly cannot picture life without basketball.

Don't break your fingers playing NES either.

Wow...I take it you like playing basketball

Well sex is great, but it is basically a daily occurrence for me (and I assume most of you guys with steady girlfriends can relate). Plus, even the best orgasm in the world can only last for 10-15 seconds at most. Basketball is a 2-3 day a week thing for me TOPS with my current schedule. Hitting a game winning shot (especially when it is next point wins in a tied game) is by far a much better experience, especially when a bunch of people on the sidelines see you hit it.
It is also VERY satisfying to put people off the court who are sore losers and immediately grab their gear and leave without saying a word. Nothing better....

You're doing it wrong if that's how you feel about sex.
As for basketball...you sound like your general attitude is that you have something to prove and that you get off on putting others down. That's more sad, than admirable.

If you played any basketball you'd be able to relate. White guys get ZERO respect from random black guys who you have never played with. You are always picked last (or not at all) if enough of their boys are there, no matter how your skill level relates.
So yes, it is quite rewarding to put these people off the court when they have the "I'm better than you" attitude without even seeing you play. You obviously don't play, so take your advice elsewhere.
I know what I'm skilled at, and I have nothing to prove, so I don't require the embarrassment of others to be satisfied.
that sux jone. knee problems are the worst. I keep playing basketball too even though i always have sore/hurt knees.
Bronty and I are gunna be playing some ball real soon now that tax season is over.
I'm playing golf regularly, and I hate golf shoes and play with very flat shoe type. I guess I'll pay more attention when it's wet to not squeeze my knee too much.
Seems like I hit a nerve. The purpose of playing any game is to have fun.
I know what I'm skilled at, and I have nothing to prove, so I don't require the embarrassment of others to be satisfied.
The purpose of playing a game is to win, but the REASON to play a game is to have fun. Someone of your intellect should be able to distinguish the two.
Here's an NES analogy:
I pop Mega Man in my NES because it is a fun game to play. In other words, the REASON that I chose Mega Man as opposed to another game is due to its fun factor. So I play all along until I get to the Rockman boss. Now do I just quit here and say "I've had enough fun today"? Hell no, you grind it out and beat the boss then finish off the game (the purpose).
No one likes to lose, and if you do then there is something wrong with you. It's no so much about embarrassing others as it is playing to your full potential. Embarassing others would be talking shit and mocking their style of play. But if you just go out there and hit your shots and win the game, then there is nothing wrong with feeling a great sense of pride and accomplishment.
I just think it's inappropriate to revel in people being sore losers.
Last year I was running to first base in softball and my acl/minuscus both ruptured and tore. Surgery and a shitload of physical therapy and I am now just finally getting back to about normal.
Except now my wife doesnt want me to play softball anymore. So I may just golf instead.
how many weeks did the doctor give you for recovery?
good luck with it
especially when a bunch of people on the sidelines see you hit it.
Couldn't that work either way?
Sucks about the knee, I play basketball with an ACL held together with screws these days, thanks to blowing my knee out playing basketball. Hell, I don't even like it that much anymore.
Hope you heal fast man, don't overdo it on the knee until you're sure it'll hold up, take my word on it.
My 2 favorite things are, blocks and offensive rebounds
haha, Jone! sick career stats. Basketball is by far the best. Nothing better than blocking someone's shot. Nothing better.
My 2 favorite things are, blocks and offensive rebounds
Dunking.
Far and away my favorite thing to do in a game.
Now you can feel less silly.
