Going to see the new Star Trek movie in about a half hour!

I have been talking about this movie for three months and now that its out (came out in theaters yesterday), I am now going to see it.  My expectations aren't high but my Trekkie senses are (god that doesn't make any sense)!

On a side note, I am looking forward to the new U force game.

  • I hear its pretty good
  • it is very good for an action blockbuster
  • I watched it last night. I liked it, but I also had... problems... with it. image But if I talked about them, this thread would turn spoiler-fest. I do recommend it though. The stand out for me was the guy who plays Bones. He is Spot. On.
  • Im a pretty hard core trek fan and I loved the new film. My awesome wife won us tickets to a preview screening a week ago or so and I had goose bumps in some parts.... she thought that I am sad because of this but I just think it means the film is awesome!

It has its flaws, yes, but let go fools and go with it... listen to the bridge noise pings and watch bones carving up the screen and youll know your onto a good thing. Im going to see it again tomorrow with some like minded nerds from work yes its very good.
  • I am a hard core Trekkie also. I thought it was awesome, don't get me wrong. I just thought that they jammed too much into it. They could have added an extra hour exploring all the characters that they were introducing, even if they had to add another B-Story or something. Oh, and more space battles. There wasn't enough shit getting blown up. They needed an all out war, like the Dominion Wars sequences. Those were bad ass. I did like the pulse phaser effect though. Like when they first introduced the Defiant in DS9.

The movie was awesome.  Any fans who had "problems" with it must not have understood the story or the premise of what was going on.

I thought this was the best way to reboot a series and make it something new and original.  It was done incredibly well.

If you want to see exactly the same story that existed in the original series...then watch the original series.
  • Just an all around great movie. In an age of many crappy movies its refreshing to see movies liek this.
  • I loved the new warp effect, too. Breathtaking.

I missed the Kirk/Bones/McCoy trifecta but I'm sure they will explore it in the next movie. There wouldn't be enough dramatic tension without Kirk and Spock being at odds for most of the movie. It was a shame that Bones was pretty much sitting in the background with his eyebrow cocked for the last 1/3 of the movie. I think he did the least of all the crew, except Uhura (all she did was intercept a Klingon transmission and get all up in Spock's biz).
  • I liked that all of the crew members were actually utilized. I also enjoyed the set pieces looking much more realistic and authentic than the sleek interiors of the other series. The naval influences were pretty clear.
  • Being a pretty hardcore Trekker myself, I'm on the fence about whether or not to see it. If Roddenberry were still alive, I would have been the first one in line. When I heard they conveniently gave Shatner the cold shoulder, I was pretty disappointed. I realize this is supposed to be a prequel, but I really wonder if it's just another one of these "reboots" that seem to be so common these days. I dunno.
  • Dain - Shatner had no place in this movie. The story would not have made any sense if he were present.

It is NOT a prequel. See it for yourself and you'll understand how good a job they did giving fans something new while not dismissing the original canon.
  • I never have like Star Trek.. well, actually I never bothered to give it a chance. After watching the movie though.. I just dropped $70 on the series 1 blu-ray. I loved this movie. I know the series probably isn't a WHOLE lot like the movie, but I'm for sure giving it a chance now.

  • I was kinda hoping the new movie would be a prequel, and we would get a new series out of it with the new actors. I suppose we still could in one of two ways. Same actors tell the pre story of TOS.. That would be pretty cool. Or they fallow the altered timeline.. that would be lame.

Overall I thought this movie was great. Certainly one of the best made Trek movies of all time. If you are looking for the normal Trek experience, this may be a little different. This is an action based drama, rather then Treks well known intellectual dramas.

I know this is weird, and some people may not be happy with this opinion.. But am I the only one that thinks Roddenberry's Star Trek is not cannon? I know its his story and world.. but to me TOS was just another Outer Limits, or Twilight Zone sci fi series.. it was just set in space. Great show.. I loved TOS.. But it just seems its self contained. Its just a show where random wierd events happen like the Twilight Zone. The series just exists to show bizarre things.

To me Star Trek is, TNG, DS9, and Voyager. Those three series are the biggest part of Trek, and they all seem to flow together perfectly, and tell a linear story of a Federation, rather then just being bizarre. Enterprise kinda failed for me, because the acting was so terrible, and starting off from the theme song, the series just didnt seem to fit. At least though it was telling a linear story.

To me.. if I want to watch one episode of cool sci fi.. ill pop in TOS. If I want to get engaged in a good story, and one the continues, and makes me want to see more, and explore a complete world and enviroment, ill start off where Gene is absent.
  • I liked the movie too but I will say that the whole way they did it made it convenient as if to say we know we know we're making a money grab here that doesn't necessarily fit exactly like you all know the history to be but the way this story goes it CAN make sense. That said if you just sit back with your butter stained hands and enjoy it for a stand alone movie that it is you will love it. I thought it was great once I got past the long time Trekker fan in me going but umn that's not exactly right moments....

Considering the story was written from scratch, means they decided not to give him a place in the movie. They game Nimoy a place, however. Either way, not putting him in there was probably a strategic move to generate (bad) press. It's working!

Actually, it is. Whether or not it came across as one is another story (i haven't seen it yet). The movie was to take place after Enterprise, but before the first series. Granted, that's what I read, so I'd have to see it to verify that.

  • Well.. once you see the movie, you might understand. It doesnt take place after Enterprise and before TOS.

    SPOILER BELOW*

The events of DS9 have already passed. The movie is based in the future of Star Trek, where Spock and A Romulan travel back in time. It would be like calling movie 4, the Voyage home, a prequel, just because they went back in time. Movie 4 of course is not a prequil, and neither is the new Star Trek movie. Just like when Picard and crew went back to make sure the first warp flight took place, and the villans didnt destroy the future.. the same happens in this movie.
  • Seriously Dain...see the movie, it is NOT a prequel. It involves time looping and multiple universes, but makes plenty of sense within the confines of Star Trek mythology.

Either way, fair enough. I really want to see it, but I just have reservations. It's one of the final frontiers I thought was sacred enough that Hollywood wouldn't completely destroy. I'll probably crack under my own pressure and see it twice, the first time to get all the "@#!*& they can't do that!" screams out of the way, then the second time to try and enjoy it!
  • ^plus, it's fun. You'll love Chekov, all the little nods to TOS...it's well made. It's a good trek fix. Try not to get too pissed off at the suspension of disbelief it requires of you at certain points, and the obvious tangents it creates with its own time paradoxes.

    Enjoy the ride! image

We'll put it this way: I love transformers, and I love Star Trek.

I hated Bay's Transformers I, and I won't be paying him to see #2. I've no desire to even pirate it and peek. If I thought it would be worth watching, I'd be happy to pay.

I loved Abrams' Star Trek, and will be first in line for a sequel.

/to the Bay TF fans: please don't hate me in this topic, feel free to hate me in a new topic.
  • Haha...I won't hate on you for your Transformers opinion. Opinions are like assholes, everybody has one, and yours definitely stinks image

I get a good laugh at the concept of suspending disbelief, though. It's freaking Star Trek...you already have to check your disbelief at the door to get past the opening credits image

Ya like I said above Dain... without giving anything away... I had the same thoughts... but once you get past that the movie itself is very good.  It's hard to explain why it CAN make sense without giving anything away but let's just say anything CAN make sense if it's in a parallel dimension affected by events such as time travel, etc....

I don't think I stopped screaming at the screen when I saw this.

  • I loved transformers as a kid, and wouldnt mind watching the old episodes again. That CGI pile of hollywood poo, I have never had any desire to see. To me it just looks like the bought the name, and said lets make a movie with the transformers name, and have a whole nunch of explosions and surround sound effects. We will rake in the cash from the 20-30 year olds.

With Star Trek, I actually wanted to see it, and I wasnt dissapointed one bit when I did see it. However I didnt go in there with the mindset that it had to live up to the Star Trek leagacy. I had already seen the previews, and knew it would be different. It is a solid movie.
  • Michael Bay's Transformers movie was the single largest steaming pile I've ever plunked down 8 bucks to suffer through.

Hearing Optimus Prime say "my bad" was like hearing the death rattle of everything that was good about my childhood. Hearing Jazz say "this looks like a good place to kick it" made me want to violate Bay in front of his family.
  • Oh, and the new Trek movie kicked ASS.
  • michael bay = ass hat. you smart guys should have known better

Seems like as good of a reason as any. I'm glad I wasn't the only one who died a little inside.
  • Alright, I gotta do me some spoilers... Keep in mind I did like the movie, but I also like picking things apart. image

Okay, not so much a spoiler first off, but I have to say I was actually kinda disappointed with Leonard Nimoy. He just didn't seem like Spock to me at all in this movie. He could've been telling me what I was doing in Civ IV the way he played it. He didn't seem Vulcan. Everything he said seemed laden with emotion. I know Vulcan was just blow'd up when we see him, but... He's got 129 years of logic going for him.

My biggest gripe, though... WHERE THE FUCK ARE THE TEMPORAL POLICE? I know there's temporal police from at least TWO periods in time, and no one's noticing, hey, Vulcan's gone, we should go fix this?!

There's also other stuff, like why would Pike make Spock and Kirk Captain and 1'st officer when they're cadets, (and also do it when no one else is around, so why would they believe these two noobs,) but those are the things that got me most.

^also, why are Pike and Spock on the same vessel. They both held positions of high authority, and would presumably if called to lead ships full of cadets, would command different ships. And what of the actual men and women of starfleet...they mobilized the entire fleet, but didn't have enough people to staff the fleet so they had to dip into the cadet pool? Also...there's an obvious threat, so let's send every single ship we have at once, blind-warping to confront an unknown? Is that tactically sound?

This is the suspension of disbelief I was talking about...perhaps I should have said "suspension of common sense."

  • Spock was a commander's rank and was the 1st officer. That's why he and Pike were on the same ship. I guess you guys don't have a grasp of how the navy operates. You need more than one officer per ship image
