  • I'm not worried about small batches. I'm more concerned that after a few thousand sales that it could reach a point where it just becomes discontinued. Could be all kinds of reasons for this, but there are quite a few discontinued repros that I believe still have enough demand to sell but were discontinued anyway. And I'm not questioning his motives (it's his business after all), I just would hate to miss out. I'll do everything I can to budget for this when it first comes out, but life happens sometimes so I just thought I'd ask. Though now that I think about it, there is probably no way that he could give me a concrete answer on it anyway. It'll probably depend on demand and profitability. Both things I'm confident of, but also both things that are hard to predict with the accuracy my questions imply.

OT, but does anybody have a working SMB2j ROM with the level select cheat? Any other repros I've ever seen don't have the level select code, and most repro don't have stages A-D accessible (no stars on title screen). Any attemps to dump it using my CopyNES have failed, likely due to custom mapper.

That game is too hard; the level select code is what made it golden and the only way I'll ever get to experience all of it...

As for the AVS, I'm getting it day one no matter what. I have a credit card and even if my bank has zero funds in it, I will find a way to afford this!

I also haven't been able to find that ROM. Everything you said is the reason I don't even bother with any of the other available repros for SMB2j.

I did manage to successfully get a graphics dump from the ROM. I posted a thread about the hack BunnyBoy used somewhere. Someone stamped the initials R:S on the castle flag which originally had a red star on it.

I have a CopyNES. Getting OT here, but if only someone could tell me what register to write too, I could possibly dump whatever bank that contains the level select code, the code which could then be extracted and copied into Loopy's MMC3 hacked version. Seriously, the B + A to select any world/sublevel is really all I would want in a potential repro.

Some guy on NESDev attempted and failed in that regard to recreate the ROM exactly. No level select:

It seems they just added the stars to the title screen so you can start on World A. The original RetroUSB repro had a stage select so you could hit A or B to start on any world and any stage you wanted.

  • Isn't this RetroUSB's "I have a dream" thread?

I am pretty sure it is nobodys "Dream" to have people reproduce their code or make"reproductions" their for personal or business use.

Lets try to keep this on topic about the AVS, it release, and all the hype that is behind it.

There won't be any restrictions on quantity because I am not doing small batches.  I will not do fake rarity or slowly trickle them out on ebay to boost prices.  Everyone who has money will be able to get one right from the beginning without scalpers, unless demand is FAR higher than I expect.  Selling out immediately would be amazing for my bank account but it won't happen

With the minimum order size being a few thousand, at some point I will have to decide whether another order will completely sell or if I would be stuck with too much unsold.  But I don't expect that point to come for many years.

And we are about to see exactly what this means . Oh, and will the wireless controllers come with opera glasses so we can play from the neighbor's house looking through the front window?

Comes with a 300 foot RF cable so you can play from the other side of a football field on a 13" CRT using a small telescope to view the game.

Pretty sure if this console was designed right unlike [cough] Retron5 [/cough], a replacement connector will never be necessary.

RetroVGS should start an "I want my AVS" campaign sort of like the 80's "I want my MTV" thing, where youtubers say "I want my AVS" somewhere in their videos...

Snes does not need them but it did not stop me from buying a few solderless connector replacements. One day it may be of use and i like to be prepared.

  • admittedly I have no idea as I have never made a game or system lol but a few thousand? I would think that would sell out within a year. I mean there are 20k members on this site alone with millions of other fans that are not. I for one am buying 2 if allowed off the get go 1 for upstairs 1 for downstairs. Also a strong possibility I buy this for my brother and brother in law next Christmas. I have talked to a few other who would like to buy more than one.

Not for purposes of being nosey about income but just curious of numbers wise what is considered a successful homebrew? 500 copies 1000 copies? I have always been curious about all time homebrew sales like which one has sold the most. I don't expect brian to publish this data but would be cool to know how many he sold first week, first month first year on the avs. In my head everyone is buying one of these but maybe I am way off

That said man I hope you sell out and have to make that decision to reorder or not!
  • I can say for certain that I will be buying 1.

According to Albert of Atariage, a lifetime run of 250 copies is very good for a homebrew. Of course the NES collecting scene is much bigger than Atari collecting. But I would still consider 250 copies of a game to be a successful production run. This is why most games are made to order. Still most vendors aren't releasing production numbers on regular edition homebrews, but nobody's getting rich on sales. Sadly it seems reproductions are a bigger business than homebrew, but NES homebrew has significantly more options now than a few years ago. Many are using custom flash mappers that do not rely on donors.

The AVS is in a different ballpark entirely as it seems Brian is going commercial this time. I imagine it will sell quite well, and if Brian says there will be enough to meet demand, there will be. Also a lot of collectors out there who don't even touch homebrew or repro stuff will want this. He plans on striking deals with B&M stores as well as selling online through RetroUSB, and I suspect in this senario, it would be wise to open a shop on Amazon and eBay to expand the market and thwart scalpers. Many gamers are fed up with cheap POS clone chips and it seems there is a market for higher end clones. The continued sales of Retron5 proove that.

I also feel other FPGA guys will follow in Brian's footsteps. Kevtris for starters announced plans for a modular and expandable system. I would love to see the AVS treatment applied to SNES and Genesis. Until then I have a Retro Freak to play with. But like the Retron5, it is an emulation machine and due to the fact NES games don't have built in headers, the machine cannot dump unknown games or homebrew mappers.

I'll just wait for the AVS. No mods for me. The n64 kit seems tempting though.

Yup!  The NES socket is on a separate PCB so it is "easy" to swap out.  Hopefully that won't be needed for a decade but that isn't something I can accurately predict...

If it takes a full year, that is plenty of time to build more before they run out.  They would only be unavailable if they sold out in a month instead of a year.

A few hundred is a success, with almost all that coming in the first few weeks.  A few thousand almost never happens (BK).  There are still tons of people who don't know new games even exist so those numbers should be able to go way up for someone good at marketing.

"skinny" is subjective, what ratios or measurements do you want?
  • bunnyboy did you watch the video at 6:30 minutes in?
  • Yes, and the question is still the same. He thinks one option is too "wide" and another is too "skinny". Both of those are subjective.

maybe you can ask him what you can do to prevent that problem.

There is no preventing it, and it isn't a problem.  3x 256 pixels = 768 across which he says is narrow.  4x 256 pixels = 1024 across which he says is too wide.  There are no integers between 3 and 4, so it can't be prevented.  It is still subjective personal preference, and also ignores that the TV will have its own scaling options.  I think 4x looks amazing so it isn't a problem for me!
