  • Hello, I'd like to confirm that I also have a 5-screw Mega Man. It's been my own personal copy for over 20 years, never had a box with it. I'd only recently been reading up on screw variants and finding this out really surprised me.
  • Wow great find! I sold my 3 screw in hopes I find a 5 screw, original mega man is awesome!

This is one im not even gonna bother looking for.  The game itself is over $65 and one of those games people'll go 'this one looks very different from all the others'.  Ive convniced myself its borderline impossible to find this one for cheap.  I got lucky with my MTPO but with that i lost all my luck

I agree with you, I got my MTPO cheap, I honestly think I'll find another MTPO before mega man.  it's helps that that game is cheaper.

But yea it definately not cheap when one pops up, and the game is scarce in general to begin with.

The only 5 screw I haven't seen for sale is star force, all the others have popped up within the last year.

    Got to keep the faith!
  • I haven't really cared about them until i got my MTPO. Just got a Goonies 2 today, also have a 5 screw Pitfall and 3 screw Volleyball. I enjoy the hunt of finding something rare that has a chance to be pretty inexpensive. Which is why Mega Man 1 is out haha. I do look for the others in lots as stuff. I enjoy it.

Nice. Did you find that locally or on eBay? I took Gyromite off my save searches for now so I haven't been keeping up with what's been for sale on eBay.

  • Hmm... this thread seems to focus on a very specific kind of variants. Where do I go to see if all the *other* little variations between the labels on my dupes are rare or undocumented?

For example, I have two Ivan Ironman Stewart's Super Off-Road paks where one has a 4-player box and the other has the proper 4-score logo. I have three versions of Spy Hunter. I have two versions of Blades of Steel even though neither is the so-called "red label." One of my two Galaga Demons of Death paks has a very different background colors. I have a LOT more than that.

Man, these two extra screws are getting expensive. That's the 2nd one to pop up in 2months, there's gotta be more out there! So glad I didn't win that auction
  • Well I'm happy.  2 new additions to my collection.

I don't get it. Castlevania II Simon's Quest is obviously 3-screw in the third picture and 5-screw in the second picture. They aren't photos of the same game pak. The seal even changes from oval 5-screw to round 3-screw, which seems backwards.

I could only see 2 pictures on the ebay app, can you post the 3rd picture?

It was definitely a 5 screw.

Explain. Did you buy/sell/receive it? The one in the third picture was not 5-screw. You can see the clips at the top and the label is completely different than the 5-screw one in the second picture. It doesn't even have the same Seal of Quality. The auction clearly has pictures of two different Castlevania II carts. The 3-screw one has visible label damage matching the description written by the seller.
  • If you're talking about the castlevania 2 cart. I did buy on eBay. I thought it would go under the radar, but there are so many 3 and 5 screw collectors now it's crazy, few years ago when I started collecting these, I would find them locally or facebook. But now everyone questions. Even people that don't care about them.

The Skate or Die was luck, ebay post too.

    THANK YOU!  This is weird

Why?!  Because A... the date code is 21st week of 86... a 3 SCREW in 86?!?  AAAAAAND... its product code is NES-CA not HVC-CA which is the famicom chip code where they were made.  It looks like a LOT of the early 5 screws were not printed in the US but famicom chips socketed in US PCBs... so now that theres a US printed DKJr. Math means this game was certainly printed in the US.  But on bootgod, his 5 screw was printed in late 86/early 87.  So perhaps this 3 screw is a refurb?
  • Most likely a refurb. No licensed NES games were produced in the USA. The NES games wtih HVC chips are those that didn't change at all from the japan release. Having a NES code on the doesn't mean anything more than the data has changed.

Yes you're right, my mistake.  Meaning it was meant for the US release (translation etc), but then why print these as NES not HVC if they'res no difference?  My DKJR has HVC and theres no revision codes either.

I even notice the PAL Stadium Events uses the same CHR as the US, but has a PAL PRG obviously
  • Who says there's no difference?
  • I haven't read through the whole thread yet but why does RC PRO AM count as a normal 5 screw while CONTRA is counted as a factory mismatch when they were both released in February 1988? I thought the Dec 87 (or maybe the Jan 88) games were the cutoff.
  • Correct me if I'm wrong, all the konami/ultra games have no warning labels on the back. RC pro am wasn't konami and still has the label?

I think RC pro am counts in the set as a normal 5 screw variant
  • Man its been a happy new year to me!!! Woooohoo. Look what I found. 3 rares in 2 months. Dang only found 4 all last year.

RC Pro AM should be in the factory mismatch section.  There is a clear Dec 87 cutoff date for 5 screw cart production, so it would take all the games between then and Pro Am showing up as 5 screws to be evidence of it as a variant.  Not the case.

  • Makes sense. I did realize though that maybe RC PRO AM was produced earlier and delayed so it did not get released until after the Dec '87 cutoff. It's hard enough to even get month/year of release so I can't imagine much information known about delays.
