I collect as a hobby, and collecting boxes and manuals gives me something more to look for. I've slowed my pace a lot lately, because I've realized that once I finish NES, I probably won't move on to another system. I'm going to savor the ride, and hopefully it'll make the moment I complete my set that much more (bitter)sweet.
This is what I'm going to be doing with my collection. I want to play the games that made me a Nintendo fanboy.
Wow, just wow. I think I threw up a little just now. I think people that collect sealed are simply people that collect sealed. No offense, but I don't think I know any "elite" NES collectors.
I think you're taking it too literally dain He was just cracking on will for cracking on loose collectors.
The fact is some of the CIB collectors on this site seem to have this attitude like loose is garbage.... will expressed it clearly just now but its certainly not limited to will. As curtis pointed out its not only kinda sad (nice nes games = self worth?), but also deluded since if they are trying to have a pissing contest over having the mintiest game, they will lose every time to someone that collects sealed.
At the end of the day it should be about collecting what you are into, not putting down what others have or don't have. I.e. don't trash what someone else collects... its not a nice thing to do and besides, someone else might return the favor.

I have gone CIB on everything now, and I barely make over minimum wage. The key is.. I dont just buy every game, and try to own everything. I just buy the games I will play, or games with good memories from my childhood. With NES I have a ton of CIBs. The thing is though, I dont go out looking to buy stuff. I just wait till I see something cheap I really want.
this is a good point, if you collect CIB you need to be patient because you can't get stuff right away, I have paid 8-12 dollars for my CIB nes games only about 15 have I paid 20 or over for. You need to shop smart. So figure I paid 8-12 dollars for about 80 games in my collection and I dont have any crap games in there, thats about what they would go for loose anyway maybe more...

hehe you got it! Surely i've just made fun of Jumpman's post. EVery collection is cool, either loose or CIB or sealed. But i think the more "complete" the collection becomes the less you actually play games and the more you actually care about it's condition.. If i were a NES collector's i'd definitely go for loose.
CIB almost tends to give an old video game store look...I've a friend of mine wanting to shoot a fake '80s video game commercial in front of my half-wall of CIBs. To me, CIBs seem more original than loose...I mean, how many games were sold brand-new at Wal-Mart, Woolworth's, Target, etc. as just the cartridge? While the argument could be taken a step further to describe sealed games as more original than CIBs, CIBs are still playable (which is what games were meant for, anyway)...a factory-sealed game, by definition, has never been played. It should be noted, however, that I do consider cart-only games as part of my collection...in fact, they're quite a large part of my collection, roughly 500 in total (counting variants). As time goes on, though, these will be upgraded and replaced with CIBs, and eventually...well...I'll need a bigger space to house and display the whole collection.
Funny you mention this. I find the carts in a CIB game are always in way better condition than I can find loose. They always boot up right away too. Loose carts have to be cleaned and cleaned again, and then reset and they're just a pain.
That's probably just because a person who kept the box and manual very likely took better care of the game to start with.
thats what I did; kept all my NES boxes and manuals in mint shape in a drawer above my system and games, basically, not only was this good practice (take care of your belongings as a kid) but if you decided to trade a game in towards another one, you got a much higher trade in value on your games when CIB.
Ya I figured that was a result of taking care of the game or adult owned. As a kid I was not like you Curtis. I chucked out the box and instructions as soon as I got it home. Maybe even in the car going home. I'm not sure I even read the instructions. stupid eh.
Since I just noticed this, here are my two million cents:
1. NES boxes fall apart in like a day. Unless you REALLY need to have them, there is no need.
2. Along with falling apart, NES boxes take up more space. You can fit almost two loose games horizontally in the space of one box.
3. All you really need, if you're looking to collect/play is the game and the manual. The game to play and the manual to know how to play it. The box just holds crap, and if all you have is essentially a manual and a game, what's the point?
4. That being said, I have a few games CIB. These are reserved for rarer titles that are actually worth something or RPGs since they tend to come with a lot of extra stuff. Otherwise, I got rid of most of my boxes awhile ago to save space.

All the elite guys are doing it

That's a relief! I think I was taking everything literally yesterday... just one of those days I suppose.

I completely agree. If you want your home or colleciton room to look like this, go for it.

lol, my brother wanted to do the same as you Ryan!
I had to get the game from my parents before my brother could get his hands on it. lol

a) they are online
b) takes a doofus to not be able to figure out something only 2 buttons
If you're just going to play and not worry too much about collecting, go loose
- Powerpak and carts of some of the best games for playing.
That's how I do it
