The future of retro collecting....

The fact is the collector pool is a buncha fucking broke teenagers and the odd 30 year old guy with a half decent salary (the "money").    That is nickels and dimes and peanuts.

i agree with you Bronty.. but what happens with our hobby in aprox 5 to 10 years?

when the majority of now broke teenagers has a job and can pay more for games?
will prices rise? or will the demand be gone by then?

It's easy to make an example for myself.. now i find it very hard to decide wether i want to buy a $150 game because that is a shitload of money to me now
In 10 years i expect to be working as a doctor.. by then the game wil be maybe $250.. only a days work!
I think that will be the same for many collectors that are now broke teenagers

  • I believe whatever games the 20 -30 year old grew up playing will be the ones that are the "in demand" games to collect. As the previous set of collectors ( the 30-40 year olds) their systems go down in price except for key titles. For example the Atari 2600 went threw a big collector boom years ago with 20 - 30 year olds and now they have moved to the 30-40 group. Now the NES has the 20-30 crowd and as we age the next group of 20- 30 year old will move onto the SNES and the N64. The NES common and uncommon titles will drop in value and and not be worth much. Of course key titles will be expensive, but even then I don't think they will command the value they are currently today.

I look at it this way, I am 30 years old. I was born in 1978 and I clearly remember the Atari. Now again the NES came out in the US in 1985. I was 7 when this awsome new device changed gaming. Over the next few years I participated in the Sega vs Nintendo advertising campaigns. It was part of my childhood, not the Atari that was around me "early" years.

Now look 10 years into the future. We can take the middle of the road person that turns 25 in the summer of 2019. So when he was born it was 1994, right there that is the SNES generation; if you the 7 more years that puts him in 2001 where the Xbox and PS2 reign. They most likely would want to collect the games of their childhood. The NES would be 34 year old tech by the time they are 25 and I doubt they would spend big bucks on those games.

I think we are starting the SNES/Genesis boom now. PS1/N64 in 5 years, and Xbox/Cube/PS2 in 10 years.

Of course this is just my ramblings. I hope some of it mades sense and wasn't just random thoughts.
Feel free to tell me how wrong I am, and how much I suck. image

Well to be honest, the SNES boom started a LONG time ago, prices are already quite high and rares like Supa Copa are well known.  PSX is also undergoing a boom even though it is in the N64 generation and not the SNES generation.  Of course both of those systems could continue to climb much higher, but the boom has already started for both.

I think that generation collecting is a pretty logical assumption as well, but the one thing the NES holds is "being the original".  If you go back to the comic book analogy, the 90s comics aren't worth the paper they are printed on but the original comics are the ones worth crazy dollars.  If Nintendo continues to make consoles for all of the foreseeable future, that will do nothing but solidify the NES market.
  • Thinking about this some more, I guess part of the issue depends on whether people collect because they are actually interested in the games, or not. I could see sealed games continuing to go up because the classic box art is fantastic and really puts modern alternatives to shame.

But other than box art, the big thing that seems to drive video game collecting is nostalgia...and newer generations will have none for the classic NES.
  • Exactly my point. I would consider the Atari 2600 the first "major" nostalgia system and that died off years ago.
  • What do you gentilmen think about the value of the NWC in the future, will it go down like the rest of the games?
  • No. I think certain titles like the NWC will retain their value. I believe regardless of the popularity of NES collecting, that cart is considered a "game collector grail" and would want to be put into any body's collection. You might find in the future people won't collect complete sets of games. They might just collect the "in demand" and "grails" of each of the systems.
  • I think the small handful of extremely rare or desirable games only need a core group seeking them to keep their prices up. Currently there seems to be an adequately enthusiastic core to support those prices. Something like the NWC would seem to have a better chance of maintaining value in the future...but then again, I don't think it will rise forever and it will likely peak at some point and settle to a lower steady-state price.

People's interests change all the time, and it's naive to think that "hardcore collectors" don't succumb to the same changes of heart that everyone else experiences.

is that a hungarian last name I see?   If I ever sell my SE I might have to give you first dibs.   I'm half hungarian and the previous owner was too.

Except the previous owner sold it to go chase a girl halfway across the world.  I don't think my wife would like it if I followed suit image

Lmao yea Im half Hungarian and half Italian image

  • I see that a lot of people want to put in their $0.02, but if you press and hold the 'ALT' key and type 0162 on the number pad, you'll get the ¢ sign.

    That's my 2¢ image

By the way, I collect Nintendo games because I like having them and I grew up playing them as a kid. What else is there to spend your money on?

Im not knocking anyone so dont take it that way. since NA ive seen plenty of members once joining buying up stuff at very hefty prices, then turning around a few years later selling everything to a new on fire collector for even more money. My guess would be several of these people spent way to much money sat back and looked at the games on the shelf and thought what the hell was i thinking. then say im burnout and sell off everything. then the next on fire guy steps in. well one day there isnt going to be the next on fire guy willing to pay thousands of dollars for a game. since NA started there is only a handful of people that still have there collections and will probally hold on to them.I think there will always be a few people that will want to collect video games but i belive within 5 years the majority of people in or getting into the hobby will shrink drastically. Its been said by quite a few people prior to letting everything go. well ill never be able to afford this cart so im just going to sell my whole collection because i cant have that one cart. one day it will come to just about all new people being completly turned off to collecting due to the insane prices people are paying. its pretty rosie now but it isnt going to last forever

I think this is true to some extent.  But as for me, I don't think I'll ever sell my core collection unless I get an offer I absolutely cannot refuse.

I can say safely say that I started seriously collecting over 10 years ago, that is, with the concious effort in mind to collect certain items.   Sure, I'll sell a few things from my collection here and there, the extras, and stuff I don't really want anymore.  But I'll keep the stuff that matters the most to me because it meant a lot to me growing up, not to mention it would be impossible to replace.

I might even give the hobby a break for a while.  I've done this before for a several year period, and eventually got back in again.  Something else is bound to grab my attention more someday, and I might forget about the hobby for a while yet again.  But I should always still have my collection (bearing some incredible offer).

  • It's funny how many of you live in BC now as NA grows... next time I make it to the "Asian Karaokee bar capital of the world" VANCOUVER... I will have to look some of you up.
  • Hahaha Asian Karaokee capital, thats good. I didn't even know about this. I guess we have it everywhere don't we. The funny thing is I don't think I have ever seen an Asian person singing, it's all drunk white people.
