5/13/2009 Poll of the Day

Comments

  • Assuming you're talking about Kurt Russel's "Jack O'Neil", then he wins, no contest.

    Next Generation

If you're talking about TV Series, then Star Trek...movies...Stargate.

Humans will probably never leave the solar system. You have to go light years before you reach the next cold rock beyond our own solar system, so huge advances in propulsion technology would be needed.

It is my firm belief that weapons technology will advance more rapidly than space propulsion technology leading to humanities eventual destruction. The peaceful Star Trek world is a fun thought, but not realistic at all.
  • Kirk. He doesn't like to lose, whenever there's a no win scenario, he always finds a way to win.
The original, though I love Next Generation as well.
    Star Trek
I dunno, also don't care, won't be in my lifetime so its trivial stuff that doesn't affect me one bit.
  • Han Solo

    Next Generation

    Star Wars

I hope we leave this solar system some day. I doubt the Earth will live too much longer, so we'll have to find some other place to set up shop.
  • Kirk, no contest, he is the ultimate bad ass. Voyager, hands down, DS9 a respectable 2nd. Star Trek, the others suck. Once I finish my super seceret cannon I have dug into the Earth, no one will stop me from getting out of here.

    Anyone get that last reference?
  • I Not a big Sci Fi guy, but I do believe that someday we will leave this solar system.
  • Kirk for sure

DS9 hands down...esp the last few seasons.

Star Wars and Trek are equal IMO.

We will but prob not anytime soon.

    ~~NGD
  • You guys are smoking something you think Shatner's Kirk could beat Kurt Russel's Colonel in a fight. I mean, have you guys actually watched the movie Stargate? The colonel is HUGE and a badass, to boot.
  • Im sure eventually we will be able to leave the solar system. It could even be from the development of weapons. Rockets were first developed for war. Have the ability to travel in the blink of an eye would certainly be usefull for war. Propulsion may be the short term answer, but I think eventually we will have to find ways to cheat the distances.
  • Nathan can I vote for Kurt Russel in Soldier? That is sci fi and in space... I love that movie he is a bad a** in that one!

Your last sentence... "It is my firm belief that weapons technology will advance more rapidly than space propulsion technology leading to humanities eventual destruction. The peaceful Star Trek world is a fun thought, but not realistic at all. " In your first post is chilling but probably DEAD ON unfortunately! image
  • Yeah, it's not a happy view of the distant future, but weapons always advance more rapidly than defenses. And you will always have cancerous elements that want to tear apart society (whether we're talking about terrorist or rogue dictatorships).

It's just a matter of time before those cancerous elements have access to weaponry powerful enough to eliminate the human race (decades, maybe...but WAY before we can viably inhabit other planets, let alone leave the solar system).

EDIT to add:  ANY vote for Kurt Russell winning a fight between those three is fine by me image
  • None of the above.

don't know, don't care, never was into Star Trek.  Though if pressed I'm sure I'd support whichever series Scott Bakula was on.

    Star Wars.

    huh?

I think its society as a whole to blame, not just rouge dictatorships and terrorists. Terrorists are fueled by the acts of ignorant world governments. There will always be ass holes bent on evil doings, but they wouldnt have fallowers if the fallowers didnt have cause.
  • We have so much to explore in our own system, but never is a long time. We haven't even mastered the energy sources and explored all of the depths and heights of our own planet, much less the dozens of interesting and potentially habitable/exploitable moons from here to the outer asteroid belt.

I think there's enough going on "locally" that there won't be much need to push out in a solar sense.
  • Han Solo.

Don't know and don't care. I've never liked Star Trek.

    Star Wars.

    I doubt it.
  • OMG! I am OUTRAGED that there is no BDG in this poll. for SHAME!!!
  • no what? BDG???
  • outrage!!! image

lol! ok, i can't type. that's the real outrage.

    bsg.

bdg is big dog? battle dog galactica?
  • Han Solo

    Next Generation revived it all

Before the prequel I would have said star wars, but now it's all about money and the story is just crap.

With all the necessary elements needed for a habitable planet (250+) the likely hood of us finding another habitable planet, having the energy source needed, and solving the problem of traveling the distance to other systems I don't think it will happen.
  • I don't like Star Trek, STAR WARS all the way! And unless they don't find some artificial gravity system for space ships, the health risks are to high. Additionally we definitely need to travel much faster to even reach our outer planets. So we might be able to leave our solar system by means of better fuels or something like that, but unless the human race evolves into something that is able to withstand zerogravity, it is useless, we won't be able to set food on any other planet!
