oooo I have bad memories of the karaoke bar.    I was about 20 and hanging out outside one waiting to get in during the 1994 stanley cup playoff run and I mouthed off to three asian kids...  well I turn around five minutes later and its the same kids only now there are nine of them and they have pool cues in their hand.   Sure they were like 150 pds each only but there were nine armed guys for christsake.   I was too drunk to know better so I thought fighting nine of them unarmed would be a good idea...    somebody's pool cue did permanent damage to my clavicle but I least I fed one of those guys some hard rights and skipped his head off the pavement a couple times.    Couldn't move my friggin shoulder the next day... took me 15 minutes to put on my pants in excruciating pain lol   I'm lucky I didn't end up in worse shape.   Haven't been back to a karaoke bar sinceimage
  • that is some crazy ass shit Dan. Same type of shit happened at my high school. Couple of guys lipped of some asian guys playing pool over a $5 bet. Next day they pulled a drive buy at the school in the back where everyone hangs out during break. 2 of our senior soccer players were hit, one in the ass and one in the calf.

it was some fucked up shit.

  • Wow. When I was 13 (1 year post cancer) me and my buddy would always walk around at night (because we were cool) one night we got jumped by 10-14 Asian guys in a Mcdonalds Parking lot and they beat the fuck out of both of us. I don't really remember what happens so I can only go by what my friend says. He told me they were stomping me. I don't remember that I remember them stomping him though. After that I didn't cruise for a while.
  • You Canadians seem to have a seriously disgruntled asian population image
  • Apparently the future of retro collecting is droves of asian-canadian street gangs trying to strong arm their way into the hobby (and sometimes our hearts).
  • as a kid that grew up in a japanese home, id like to make clear that the japanese population are much less likely to retaliate like this. we are more inclined to employ you some day and not give your family health benefits image

honestly though, if any of you gamers feel like talking smack to an asian (you're never talking to just one, as we've learned), look for socks. if there are none, stay away.... go find a math major. also gold jewlery or tricked out cars is a red flag. stock off-white honda? go for it.

Chris, i am surprised that these kids would attack you two for no reason. Were one of you offending them in some way?
  • "stock off-white honda - go for it" --- that's priceless robin!

well stuff like what chris curtis and I said could just have easily been white guys or Indo-cdn kids or whatever.  you do a lot of stupid things as a kid sometimes you get bitten in the ass.   It teaches you to do less stupid things.   And then sometimes people are just a-holes for no reason... that's the shit I can't stand.   Me getting attacked... well sure it was extreme but if I hadn't been such an a-hole myself it wouldn't have happened.   Its when kids are just looking for fights and you're their excuse that's hard to swallow.   Maybe that's what happened to chris, I dunno.   Sounds brutal in either case.
  • Man, I've never F'ed with an asian but you guys have made my mind up for me if I ever decided to. I live close to the hood (literally, voted worst place to live in the US several years ago), and thought I had it bad. If the asians migrate here, I heading out.
  • That's why I live on an Island. haha.
  • i live in the hood

the only good things that are here are the deals on games

im sure most of them are hot

i got a ps3 a few weeks after they came out for 250.00

    thats the hood for you

  • Damn Dan that is indeed some crazy ass shit. 150 lb guys are roughly my size, and I can imagine a lot of us put together could do some damage to a much bigger guy. Yeah, karaoke bars usually suck anyway, most people cannot sing worth a crap, but occasionally you see some real talent.

Nope they were just looking for a fight. It was really bad first they said they all lost their cell phones and they asked if we had any money  or a cell phone they could use then they surrounded us slowly. Then they went at it. lol
  • over here in portland they are ruthless (generalizing here), but they stick to their own, if left alone. cops even kind of stay away.

one example of how ruthless some of them can be: there was a gang member that had done something bad, and went in to hiding for a week. the opposing gang went to the kids parent's video store, knelt both of them down and executed them both one bullet in the head. this happened 5 blocks away from where i live. strangely, no one in the neighborhood felt unsafe after that. just sad that the family was brought in to it.
  • Very sad that happened. Geez. It's one thing to smack somebody around. Like Dan even admitted, in his case he deserved it. But killing family members... That's the future of retro game collecting I guess. I'll just stick to the Island of getting high and love.

Dude that's scary, glad you and your friend made it out alive.
  • The island is pretty cool, especially Tofino, but there is too much NDP support.

I was born in Nanaimo and lived there through grade 1. I went to Fairview elementary and spent a lot of time in Harewood (spelling?) where my cousin lived in the ghetto. My grams lived in Cinnabar Valley with all the other old folks.

  • what was this topic about again?
  • Curtis I took a bank cruise up north that stopped in Nanaimo about 2 years ago. Small world!

Man... it's scary that I didn't even know about this.
  • NDP NFG. I'm with you Curtis. We are a little to high over here sometimes. I grew up in Nanaimo as well. haha. I didn't think Nanaimo got any cruise ships. Cool.

yes.  i feel much better and a little gay now...
  • It is kind of upsetting to me all the people that are out to make a profit on us retrogamers. This is a hobby that is best perused by someone with alot of patience. I was buying some games from a reseller that was going out of business and everything was half off. I paid like $8 for a copy of Bomberman 2 for the SNES that was originally $16. I was organizing my shelf the other day and noticed the $4.99 Play and Trade Price Tag on it.

Also what upsets me is this....ok lets say Contra for the NES sells for $30 on eBay. So I find a copy of the game at a local flea market. The seller will want to charge the eBay price regaurdless of the cart's condition. Sun faded, torn label ect...I was at Play and Trade and they wanted $25 for a copy of Toe Jam and Earl where someone had drawn on the label.

A mint copy of Spiderman #1 is worth a small fortune. Take that same copy of Spiderman and draw on the cover yellow the pages and sunfade it a little bit. Is it still worth the same as the mint copy? According to most of the game sellers I meet then yes it is.

I am tired of local sellers using eBay as a basis for their over inflated pricing. I mean sure the game is more on eBay but I have like 10-20 diff listings of the same game I can pick from. Locally it is usually one beat ass copy.

I also hate the over use of the word "rare" is a game really rare when you can go on eBay any day of the week and find 10-20 listings for the same game? Rare no...hard to find perhaps. I mean its not like I can walk into Target or Wal-mart and buy NES games anymore. So of course it is hard to find. Locally at least.

It is just upsetting...the internet and eBay has ruined the yard sale/flea market culture. Now everyone wants top dollar for their crap. I mean it is their stuff they have every right to sell it for what they want. No one is forcing me to buy it.

I have actually found myself using eBay more lately. Sometimes it actually works out a little cheaper. Plus I can look at the pictures (if they are not stock photos) and pick the game that seems to be in the best quality. As opposed to, Seller - "here is a copy of Mega Man 5 my dog took a dump on... $60 take it or leave it."

Sometimes you do make out good...I did actually score a copy of Mega Man 5 for $11 and TMNT 2 NES for $1. That is why I still go out to the flea markets.

I am 26 and in to collecting because I played these games as a kid. I was never lucky enough to have allot of games or systems. Now that I am older and have an okay job I can buy back my child hood memories one game at a time. Or just play all the great games I missed. They may be old but a good few of them are new to me.

I do not buy games because they are going to be worth a fortune some day. I buy they because I want to play/enjoy them. I also want to make sure our gaming heritage is preserved. I am not a huge fan of modern games.

I recently bought a DSi and it is no surprise that some of my favorite games for the DS are remakes/re-imagined (sp?) SNES classics.

My Wii is basically no more than an all in one emulation station so I am not constantly swapping consoles.

My fiance seems to think that the games of today wont be worth much in the future because allot more people are into gaming these days. However I disagree. The gaming culture of today had been brainwashed into a new way of thinking. Buy it, trade it for a few bucks. Pump that money back into game stop and repeat. Plus allot of the kids today don't seem to take very good care of their games.

Also before I stop this long winded first post of mine one more rant.

I really like Play and Trade...for the most part. The guys there are really nice to me. But here is what I hate.

One local PnT will want $79 for a SNES JR in ehh shape. While another PnT wants $29 for an SNES JR Complete in box.

Sometimes I will be sifting through the loose game bin and find a decent SNES game for $14.99 or so. Then as I keep looking I will find the same game for $4.99 in the same or better condition. There prices seem to be very random sometimes. It has been good for scoring some deals but why is one copy of the same game three time as much? It is like some poeple just pull the prices out of their a$$.

SNES games seem to be at an all time hi right now as far as prices go.

Thanks for listening..this has been my first post. Hello to all.

    Kinda off topic...

This also makes me think of the time when we were promised CD/DVD tech would make games cheaper to produce thus the savings would be passed to the consumers.

However once that game co's started using the medium the number of developers it takes to make a game went up. I mean a good nes game could be done by one or two people. I am sure many of them were.

These days you need 200 people to produce all the content for a CD/DVD game. So now you have a cheaper medium to produce but you have to pay allot more people. The game co's pocket the difference.

I have never thought of this but you are totally right...

Yeah I know.   I seriously don't know how I didn't end up in worse shape.   All I remember of the fight is wrestling the first guy to the ground and feeding him a couple punches with his head on the pavement and then I don't remember anything after that.   My next point of recollection is the fight being over and me SCREAMING at them for being pussies and to come back and fight LOL.

I had two buddies with me who had the good sense to get in the car (whereas I didn't) and I think they peeled a couple guys off me after a while, but I really haven't a clue.   Just remember being enraged like never before.  I walked home like three miles solo because I was so choked
