Ugh I hate dealing with Car Sales people!

I was planning on buying a new car tonight (Jeep Wrangler) but the car people keep jerking me around.   They offered me half of what the NADA said my car was worth so I just got up and walked out.  Plus before that they already tried to renig on the price that they offered me so that special was over.  Just annoying all the crap they try to put you through.

as long as the sales lady was attractive, i see no reason why you hate dealing with car sales people! quit complaining!   image

on a serious note, care sales suck. they should be doing EVERYTHING in their power to get you into a new car.  you should be able to pick something up for minimal down and 0% apr for at least 60 months... some car companies are offering 0% over 72 months!

  • Jeep is offering 0% APR for 36 months through Chase, plus 1000 rebate and employee pricing. It made a 27820 Jeep down to 23886, which I was perfectly happy with. But then they tried to say the employee pricing and rebate was over even though THEY said it was good till midnight tonight. What pissed me off was them offering 5k for my car that is in very nice shape and I could easily get 9k for in a private sale. It books at retail at nearly 11k....They keep leaving the room type of crap and I don't like to play silly games.

  • Sorry to hear about your car buying troubles. I just recently purchased a newer Jeep to replace my Camaro. Before I bought the Jeep, I went to a Hyundai dealership to look at the lowest end vehicle they had. I needed something to get me through the winter that was good on gas and at least front wheel drive. They ended up wanting to sell me a Mercury ... something. That's not what I wanted! These car salesmen are always trying to take control of the sale. Instead of letting the car sell itself, they try to push the sale on you. Regardless, I went to a used car dealership that was of much smaller scale with no pressure and was able to buy my Jeep for $2,000 under book value and I got an interest rate 3% lower than the Ford dealership. Best of luck to you in your car-buying journey.
  • You should do an email/fax blitz. There is no reason to haggle in person. You can have a locked-in price that is well below invoice before ever stepping onto the lot.

Go check out the car buying thread on Fatwallet Finance.
  • I was happy with the price we worked out on the car I was buying, just not on my trade in amount. I was prepared to buy the car that night but they didn't want to play ball. You would really think a company (aka Chrysler) that is about to go bust would be trying their best to move some cars quickly. I have them till noon today to call me back if they wanted to work something out.....we will see soon enough.

  • Dude, ya gotta take your car buying advice from Dr. Cosby. Dress like the drunkest, hillbilly, redneck that you can make yourself up to be and then go shopping. Trust me, it works. I did this when I bought my entertainment set up and went car shopping a while ago. They treat you a bunch differently if they think you make $80k/yr or $25k/yr. They would let me ask stupid questions, browse alone, and offered me the deal I wanted when I asked. If you go in there in a suit, they will dick you around to no end. But dressed like a redneck and walking out of the store with a $5000 TV and $5000 in stereo equipment makes their jaw drop. image

Try it, you might get a great deal like my brother did on his almost brand new 2008 Jeep. 11K for an vehicle that would sell 18K, only had 2000 miles on it, and still had 2.5 years of warrenty left.
  • Don't give them 2 variables to screw you with. This is exactly how car people work. They might give you a killer deal on that new car, but they're gonna screw you on your trade it. Doesn't matter to them how they get your money. Only give them 1 variable to work with, the price of the car you are buying from them. Never trade in your car to a dealership. Always sell to a private party, you will always get the most money that way.
  • I disagree blarky. I traded my last car into a dealer and got a KILLER deal, they gave me 2k over blue book for it, and they came down 4k off the sticker price. I saw several of the same exact car sell for the sticker. Just depends on the dealer and how badly they need to sell a car at the time I guess.

  • Also I believe you get a nice tax advantage when you trade in. I could be very wrong though. I believe when you trade in they take the price off the new vehicle so it is less sales tax, and you wont be hit with a tax for selling your vehicle somewhere else.
  • Private sales of vehicles shouldn't incur any sales tax that I know of. And unless it's a high-end vehicle that appreciates (likes a Rolls Royce or a Ferrari) then you don't have to worry about capital gains, either.

I'm pretty sure it doesn't lower the taxable basis of your new vehicle either. The deal has to treat it as a separate transaction so they can accurately account for their own taxes on the trade in when they finally sell it.

    This is true.

Have you shopped other dealerships?  Bring in the deal they originally offered you to other dealers and see if they'll match.  I can't imagine dealers will not take a reasonable deal these days.

Ideally  it is best to deal with only one variable like Blarky mentioned.  Specifially, work out the price then move on to the trade in, etc.

  • I have been to 2 of the 4 Jeep dealers so far. 1 dicked me around, and other didn't have any that I liked at all. I am going to hit the other 2 up tomorrow hopefully and see what happens....

I don't know about the US, but in Canada, any trade in automatically reduces your purchase price for tax purposes, so yes, you do save a considerable amout of tax.

  • I'm with Jason. When I bought my last car. I walked in the dealership and said I'm giving you this for that car and you will give me this for my trade in. If you don't like that, then I'll go somewhere else. Good luck Jason.

I was able to get the %0 for 60 months on my new lancer gts. But not right away, the first time I went in there they lied and said my credit score was lower than it was and would only give me a 3% rate....which is still good but I wanted 0%. I went back a month later and said you have 5 minutes to sell me a car and they went right to 0% with a $285 monthly payment ($5 more than before)

Jason - you will be getting a phone call from the dealership in the morning. Mine called me EVERYDAY for a week after I left the first time. It's a buyers market right now.
  • If you can get the deal at another dealership but they don't have the vehicle, see if they can trade jeeps. A lot of dealership exchange inventory amongst each other.
  • JEEP JEEP JEEP JEEP JEEP JEEP JEEP JEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEP image Hooray JEEP

Just got home from the a different dealer and I am the proud new pappa of 09 Silver Jeep Wrangler - Sahara Edition. They were much easier to work with and I got a better Jeep. I am giddy like a school girl...now if it just wasn't supposed to rain for the next week image
