Ugh I hate dealing with Car Sales people!
I was planning on buying a new car tonight (Jeep Wrangler) but the car people keep jerking me around. They offered me half of what the NADA said my car was worth so I just got up and walked out. Plus before that they already tried to renig on the price that they offered me so that special was over. Just annoying all the crap they try to put you through.

as long as the sales lady was attractive, i see no reason why you hate dealing with car sales people! quit complaining!
on a serious note, care sales suck. they should be doing EVERYTHING in their power to get you into a new car. you should be able to pick something up for minimal down and 0% apr for at least 60 months... some car companies are offering 0% over 72 months!

Try it, you might get a great deal like my brother did on his almost brand new 2008 Jeep. 11K for an vehicle that would sell 18K, only had 2000 miles on it, and still had 2.5 years of warrenty left.

I'm pretty sure it doesn't lower the taxable basis of your new vehicle either. The deal has to treat it as a separate transaction so they can accurately account for their own taxes on the trade in when they finally sell it.
I don't like to play silly games.

C'mon now...
Also I believe you get a nice tax advantage when you trade in. I could be very wrong though. I believe when you trade in they take the price off the new vehicle so it is less sales tax.
This is true.
Have you shopped other dealerships? Bring in the deal they originally offered you to other dealers and see if they'll match. I can't imagine dealers will not take a reasonable deal these days.
Ideally it is best to deal with only one variable like Blarky mentioned. Specifially, work out the price then move on to the trade in, etc.

Private sales of vehicles shouldn't incur any sales tax that I know of. And unless it's a high-end vehicle that appreciates (likes a Rolls Royce or a Ferrari) then you don't have to worry about capital gains, either.

I don't know about the US, but in Canada, any trade in automatically reduces your purchase price for tax purposes, so yes, you do save a considerable amout of tax.

I was able to get the %0 for 60 months on my new lancer gts. But not right away, the first time I went in there they lied and said my credit score was lower than it was and would only give me a 3% rate....which is still good but I wanted 0%. I went back a month later and said you have 5 minutes to sell me a car and they went right to 0% with a $285 monthly payment ($5 more than before)
Just got home from the a different dealer and I am the proud new pappa of 09 Silver Jeep Wrangler - Sahara Edition. They were much easier to work with and I got a better Jeep. I am giddy like a school girl...now if it just wasn't supposed to rain for the next week
