Gaaah tooth pain!

So a little over a week ago, I went in for some dental work on a molar that a chunk had fallen off of about a year ago. I thought I'd need a root canal, but the doctor cleaned it up and said it hadn't reached the root, so all I needed was a filling.

Now the tooth is KILLING ME. I'd never really had problems with it before, except for gum agitation sometimes. Now it's really sensitive to cold, and about three or four times a day decides to hurt like absolute hell for a half hour or so for no reason. I can feel it all the way down in my jaw.

No real point in this post other then to complain. I hurts. Tooth pain is the worst. image

  • Tooth pain and ear infections are the WORST! I guess call the Dentist. I bet your having a hard time sleeping.
  • sucks man image one time i had a tooth that i thought needed a root canal but the dentist just said it was irritated or something and ground down the edge of it. it decided to hurt like hell for a week or so before calming down finally.
  • I have a canker sore on my soft palate right now, and it KILLS to eat anything and swallow. Even talking is painful. 3 days now it's been hell, I think I may have jabbed it with a toothbrush or something.
  • I know. I dealt with incredible tooth pain for about a year one year when one of my fillings fell out and the tooth broke. With no money to go to the dentist I had to deal with the pain of the exposed nerves underneath, my only temporary source of somewhat relief being pain medicine from the drugstore shelf and there's this stuff, forget what its called, that can be used as temporary filling. Since that time that tooth has pretty much all rotted out and what hadn't has been covered up by gums, but also since all my top back teeth are getting pretty nasty too. Guess I can blame myself for all the junk, particularly chocolate that I used to eat constantly. And brushing don't seem to do a damn thing. I haven't been to the dentist since I was in my preteens, 12-13 years old I guess, and that was the only time I ever went to the dentist. Going to the dentist is a luxury, anyone being able to get really good tooth care should definitely consider themselves privilaged. There is a possibility that all my health problems stem from my bad teeth (its just the 3 upper back teeth on both sides, the rest of my teeth look pretty good), but what can I do, teeth aren't pulled for free unless you can pull 'em yourself, not an easy, nor safe task to do, teeth would rather rot than fall out, and they're deeply rooted, not going anywhere, unfortunately not any time soon.
  • Sorry to hear about this man... Tooth/teeth pain is the worst..

I just had a root canal finished up yesterday from an abscessed tooth..
It was not fun.. Feeling much better today though..  Alot less money in my pocket though.. Teeth are expensive..  I say  F*** em..  I'll just get dentures..  Just kidding.

    Good Luck!!!
  • I had what I thought was a small cavity about two months ago, and when I went in to have it filled, it turned out that half of my tooth had been eaten away from the inside. $2000 dollars later, I have a porcelain tooth. Sucky.
  • You jinxed me with this topic man, I just lost a filling a little while ago while eating a McDonalds cheeseburger, one moment its all good then suddenly ouch, that's an awfully crunchy burger, WTF. image
  • I kinda WISH my filling would fall out, so it'd stop HURTING. image

And my dentist is on vacation to watch his nephew graduate. image
  • Not my tooth, but the inside of my upper lip got a nasty scrape back in Feb while I had the flu. I was taking my temperature in the bathroom, and for whatever reason I suddenly felt extremly dizzy, passed out, banged my head on the door, and flopped on the floor. The wound wasn't bad at first, but the next week or so while it healed, my eating habits came to a screeching halt. I couldn't eat or drink anything without excruciating pain due to the exposed nerves. I had some oral anethetic to deaden the pain for about an hour or so, but the very act of applying the stuff invoked the worst possible pain I have ever felt... I can't even describe how bad that hurt. I had to endure that several times at day for several days so I could at least eat. So yeah, MOUTH INJURIES SUCK!!! Your "signal to noise ratio" of nerves is very good there. Lots of them, and very near to your brain. OUCH.
  • to help with the cold food or hot food idea maybe try some sensodyne toothpaste it works pretty good for me I sometimes have sensitive teeth and this helps.

Yeah, I gotta get me some of that.

So far I've noticed if I take some advil right when it starts to hurt, it does a pretty good job of cutting it off. Ambosal or whatever it's called don't do jack though. Which makes me worry, since that means it's deep down pain...
  • I second the Sensodyne toothpaste... It's a must use for people with any tooth pain..

Colgate also makes a toothpaste for sensitive teeth and it works okay.. but not as good as sensodyne..
  • There's no excuse for not taking care of your teeth.  I didn't have insurance for a couple months one time, so I went to the Dental school aorund here, $5 for a cleaning.
  • kind of OT, but back a few years ago I had an earache that was super bad. The pain kept getting worse and worse. I went through all kinds of medicine and ear cleaners.. even tried an ear wax candle (probably made it worse lol). Stupid me went fishing to Erie in the back of a cold van (made it worse). That next day the pain was so bad I couldn't think, could barely talk because the pain was unbearable. I felt like bashing my head in. Went to the ER, they said it would be like 3-4 hours before I could get in. Went to a different hospital and got right in. Up till that point I was like an idiot, I probably looked weird holding my head and talking to myself about bashing my head in haha... oh man... +1 on the dental school thing. Around here I think they take in volunteers for cleanings (i think you pay a small amount for the use of equipment or whatever supplies).
  • My ex-fiance told me a horrible ear story about her aunt... One day she woke up and couldn't hear very well out of one of her ears. She never did anything about it. Then five years later, she pulls this looong down pillow feather out of her ear, covered in earwax. ...And then she could hear fine. image

Jared, dental school is okay for cleanings.. but my wife had some fillings done there and they messed her teeth up worse..  after we got married and she got on my insurance, she had to have 17 crowns done because everything the dental school did was getting worse and worse..

Just be careful when going to a dental school for anything other then a routine cleaning.
  • I have a cavity in the back of the right side of my mouth. It's a little deep, so much that food gets stuck in it every time I eat on that side (some of it I can't get out). On the exact opposite side I have another cavity, and a few other teeth have some as well. I've already been to the dentist like 4 times to get some filled.
