Definitely worth checking out. It's a bit of a "hot trendy" title, so it pretty costly and in demand. But I'd say it's well worth it if you have any love at all for 8 bit games in general.

Congrats on the milestone. I really admire the effort to go for a complete CIB collection. I love the DS library and have been collecting all the solid titles for it that I can find CIB. I was happy to see I had all your spotlighted titles except the mega man title and Color Cross one, the latter of which I bought immediately since I'm a big Picross fan. Also missing the slipcover to Super Robot Taisen but happy to have found it at all in the wild.

Keep it up! Looking forward to seeing all your future finds. Subscribing!

Thanks man! Glad to hear you picked up Color Cross. If you like Picross, it will not disappoint. There are some insanely big pictures and it's just a generally fun title to kill time. Let me know how you like it once it arrives. Super Robot Taisen is one of the most expensive, if not most expensive games on the DS. Finding it in the wild in any condition is a trophy in my opinion. Was one of the titles I resorted to eBay for and it's a rather recent pickup because I was getting impatient and worrying about future spikes on it. I'd say that game and Infinite Space are the 2 most pricey DS games.
  • Some real gems there. Hamsterz superstarz AND cake mania?

I am kinda curious how these play though
  • Jesus, mate! That is impressive!

Having 1,000 games period seems like a good enough accomplishment that I'm trying to get to, then you have 1,000 for one system!!

I must ask, Mr. XYZ, how many games do you have in total? And are you able to post pictures in the Collection Pics thread..?

I have been playing the hell out of NES remix on 3DS so it sounds like it's right up my alley.
  • Awesome job sir! I've been having fun collecting DS as well, though I try my hardest not to pick up a CIB unless it's $3 or under. Just grabbed all the Cake Manias and Mama games I could handle today!

  • 3/26/16 update. I picked a few up earlier in the week but don't have pics. As of today, my new total is 1015.

First up, Girls Only by O-Games. One of the hardest CIB games to find. I have no idea why, other than it's a small crappy publisher, paid 6$ on Amazon! Usually none on eBay for this game. Next, Disney's Herbie Rescue Rally, which I got for $2.50 locally.

Last night, I stopped in Wal-Mart (I usually go there every few months to check for random deals) and found Monster High re-sealed for 8 bucks. Not a great deal or anything. I also decided to post my 3DS pickups because I am also collecting for that system and it's so brotherly to the DS. Professor Layton vs. Phoenix Wright; I paid $30 (retail price) at Target. I really want to play it and have never seen a copy at GameStop used, and it's selling for even more online than new in Target, so I figured I'd bite the bullet since I'm eager to actually play it. I did my first count on my 3DS collection and I sit at 101 titles (far fewer than I thought I had).

  • Wow dude, amazing!
  • I recently crossed 850 myself in DS land (before variants, NFRs and all that good stuff). Just think, you've still got ~800 to go!
  • I honestly read the title expecting to see you cracking open 1,000 sealed DS games and thinking you had a hell of a fun day. Geez I'm naive.

    Congrats on the monumental milestone!

  • 4/7/16 - Time for an update!

I am up to 1021 titles after today. These items are pickups from the past week or so.

First up is 3 games from GameStop. Yes, that's right, CIB's from GameStop! Iron Man 2 was <4$ (can't remember exact amount), Juiced 2 was I want to say $1.79; and Pokemon Mystery Dungeon: Explorers of Sky was $16. Not bad!

Next up are my 3DS pickups for the week. First is a sealed copy of Code Name S.T.E.A.M. for $9.99 and then an item I have never seen before, a collectible outer box for the first Final Fantasy Theatrhytm game, with a special area in the middle that allows you to push it to hear audio samples from the game!!! $4 sealed the deal. I am in the process of getting the 2nd Theatrhytm game on 3DS, which has a boxed edition w/ soundtrack. I think these 2 will go excellent together!

Lastly, I picked up a sealed copy of the last DS game released. It's the Disney 2 Pack featuring Big Hero 6 and Frozen: Olaf's Quest. I originally suspected it was a GameStop exclusive, but it is not. I got it sealed for 20 and as it turns out, there are only 2 on Amazon and 2 on eBay. The copies at GameStop are all opened, so finding a sealed was a priority for me. It was the ONLY game from 2015, I believe, and like I said, last DS game. Next up, a sealed Shepherd's Crossing 2 DS. This is hands down, top 5 rarest game on DS. I guarantee this game will prove challenging to find CIB or sealed. Lastly, another very, very obscure item. It's the pre-order bonus for Moon, still unopened. It includes a stylus and cart holder. I have not pictured my other pre-order/merchandise for DS, but I am very close to having every single one. I believe the last ones I need are the stylus for the Wal-Mart edition of Wappy, but I have worked diligently on these pre-order items for several years and I had until 2 weeks ago not believed the Moon stylus existed. I accidentally snapped a pic of the back, but the front kicks ass with a logo on both items.

Nice pick ups.  I nabbed a Shepherd's Crossing 2 last year on ebay. What's the story on that Theater Rhythm? Any idea if that was a store exclusive?
  • I love the DS so I'm always happy to see a fellow DS collector! Great job on the 1000 mark!
  • ^ Thanks Krakensoup!

^^ Alakhira, I wish I knew the backstory on Theatrhythm. Like I said, I have never seen one before. In the back of my head I feel like I saw one at GameStop a few years back, but that's not fur sure. If I figure anything out I will let you know. I definitely don't think it was ever offered for sale, but rather put on display as a promotional piece. It just doesn't look or feel at all like the typical display boxes that GS sometimes uses. It has a small battery inside that can not be opened without tampering/tearing open the insides.
  • i have a shopping basket full of cases and manuals. Don't know whats in it. I might have to sell off the lot.
  • Hey XYZ, I love collecting and playing DS games as well! What are the top 10 DS games that you enjoyed playing the most? They can be popular or hidden gems. I just want to make sure I'm not missing anything. I always think I have all the ones I want to play, and then I'll hear about 1 or 2 more cool ones that I didn't know about. Drone Tactics is a good example of this. I discovered it last summer when I saw it at gamestop for $2 and decided why the heck not. I played it all vacation long and couldn't put it down.

Hi Yukfou, here's my faves, in no particular order:

Color Cross - a really good Picross-style game with very large puzzle

From the Abyss - an action-rpg w/ very smooth gameplay

Lufia: Curse of the Sinistrals - a re-imagining of SNES Lufia, in 3D, but so radically different it's like a whole new game.

Steal Princess - I have a thing for Atlus games. This is a "3D" action-puzzle game.

    Draglade - A music/fighting mash-up from Atlus

Dragon Quest Heroes: Rocket Slime - action rpg

Blue Dragon: Awakened Shadow - another action rpg, pretty uncommon game, but very good

Lunar Knights - and another action rpg - from Hideo Kojima, very fluid gameplay

    Monster Tale

    All 3 Castlevania games

    All 4 Professor Layton games

Scurge: Hive - this is a really awesome game, was on GBA as well, but I prefer the 2nd screen personally, while others prefer GBA version. It's an isometric adventure game and really is a hidden gem.

    Hotel Dusk: Room 215

    Flower, Sun & Rain

    Again

    Theresia - nice Shadowgate/survival horror

Miami Law - from Hudson Soft

    Lux-Pain

    Moon

    Dementium 1+2

Commando: Steel Disaster - like Metal Slug, total hidden gem

Aliens: Infestation - very good, but frustratingly hard

Bangai-O - spiritual successor to Dreamcast game

Legend of Kage 2 - the sequel to NES game! Cool cutscenes/story, and love the double screen play just like Contra 4.

Dungeon Explorer - sequel to Sega CD/Turbo game, different entirely from PSP release

G.I. Joe - 100% different game than the PS3/PS2/Wii version (which sucks).

Ghostbusters - Ditto above, but quite confusing to be honest.

Elite Force: Unit 77 - talk about an out there hidden gem, this one took me a few minutes to remember the name. It's a really, really unheard of game. It's only 5$ new on Amazon too. I'd say check it out if you want a cool little game; reminds me of only one other game: Commandos for PS2.

So that's more than a top 10, but hey, I highly recommend the entire list! And fwiw, I tried to name mostly unknown or hidden gems of games, rather than bore you with the normal top 10 list stuff like Mario/Metroid/Kirby/etc.
  • Monster Tale is indeed awesome. Picked it up when it came out. Great game.
  • very impressive collection, really enjoying the updates!

I have some of those like blue dragon, lunar knights, scurge hive, and dragon quest heroes rocket slime, but I'll be adding commando steel distaster to my list for sure, and maybe bangai-o too. What exactly is elite force unit 77? I looked at some still images and it looked kinda like a combat game?

  • Nice collection. With Nintendo apparently stopping all DS cart production now is probably the best time to pick up DS games. My DS collection is currently small and needs attention but I have been able to grab some of the hard to find gems, cheap. Will continue to add to my collection whenever I can.
  • Great collection you have there. I also really enjoy collecting for the DS.

Check out a video on Youtube to see gameplay, but basically Elite Force involves controlling a squad of people on a 3/4th map, it's just a unique/cool game, and this comes from someone who doesn't play strategy games. As for Blue Dragon, there are 2 on the DS, the game called Awakened Shadow is the good one (in my opinion) and it's also much more costly (but worth it!)

I actually have both blue dragon games. I got ridiculously lucky and found them both complete at the same gamestop a couple months ago. I realized how rare awakened shadow was when I looked it up later and didn't see a single complete one on ebay. I'll definitely be playing that sometime soon. Gotta finish up fire emblem first.
  • That's the biggest DS collection I've ever seen. Looks unreal!
  • Time for an update! I was planning to keep this thread current but Photobucket is just such a pain in the neck to use. If anyone knows a good Android app for uploading/storing photos, please lemme know!

Anyways, here we go! These pics are covering mostly the past 2-3 weeks. I have been scouting cheap titles out as the price points right now is just too good to pass up. I'm close to pushing 1,100 titles, so below is the majority of all recent DS and 3DS pickups. Everything is a local in the wild find w/ the exception of the 2 imported DS games (see below) and one very, very rare Atlus game.

First up we have the 3DS pickups. First is 50 Classic Games 3D, which is basically a re-release of a DS game. It's by Maximum,. which is known for low print releases. I got it for $10. And then Mahjong Cub3d, which is 1 of 2 Mahjong games for 3DS. This has been on my list for a while because it is by Atlus, costing me $7.

Next up, some more 3DS stuff. Skylanders SWAP Force Starter Pack for $10, Dead or Alive Dimensions, $8 at GameStop, and Rodea the Sky Soldier bundle from Toys R Us for $10. They marked the Wii U and 3DS versions way down then the price got marked back up. I was able to secure this one but not the Wii U, which is fine as I have the NIS pre-order version:

My other 3DS pickups for the month. Chibi Robo Zip Lash bundle, clearance form GameStop for <20$. And Megaman Legacy Collection from Target for $47.50. The Megaman box is one of the cheapest and flimsiest I have ever encountered in this hobby. Shame on Capcom. I figured I'd pickup the closest thing to a mint box now before it's too late. In a year or 5 from now, I guarantee this will be hard to find a mint copy of. This one has a ding and so did the other 2 I came across. Also in the pic are 2 DS accessory kits for 3$ from GameStop.

Next up is DS! 8 pics for DS pickups!

What is this? These are 2 of the last DS stylus' that I needed. the Mario & Sonic set was a pain in the neck to find. An the envelope is a Kirby stylus sent as a "gift" for registering your copy of Kirby DS (forget which one) and includes a small letter thanking one for registering and offering the stylus for doing so. I have never seen one other than here.

I have wanted to get this one for quite some time now. It's a Zelda franchise spin-off by Nintendo only released in Japan and Europe. I have been holding off for the longest time and the price just keeps going up and the amount available keeps dwindling. I got it for under $50 after S&H from UK. One of a handful of awesome titles we didn't get here in the states. Anyways, if anyone else is going to import Tingly's, make sure it's the English version as the French, Italian, etc. often have said language on boxart, but nonetheless, the game is 5-in-1 languages, so make sure it has that little 5-in-1 logo on the back before importing it. This one is the UK version so it's English box art too:

Oops, I forgot, I did indeed import another DS game, from my favorite franchise ever, Ys. This is Ys Strategy, a somewhat disappointing game, but an Ys game nonetheless which was approx. $20 from UK. Next is Dragon Ball Z: Attack of the Saiyano for approx. $10, Ace Attorney: Justice for All, $15.00, and then a really awesome item, my first repro for the DS, Retro Game Challenge 2, the English version. The sequel to RGC was never released outside of Japan, so somehow this company got rights to do a translation and legally release it here. I tried it out and it's just like part 1 but more in depth, as in many more games. All text is in English and it only works on a DS, not a 3DS. Includes a nice little cardboard slipcover too!

My Baby Boy, an uncommon shovelware title, $2.50, Are You Smarter than a 5th Grader: Game Time, $2.50, Spyro $12, Sonic Rush Adventure $10, Spore Creatures $.89 from GameStop, and 4-in-1 w/ Battleship, $2.50:

Emma at the Farm $5, giving me now both Emma games, Hamsterz Life, $2.50, Backyard Sports: Rookie Rush, $2.50, Harvest Moon DS $10, Harvest Moon DS: Island of Happiness $10, Chick E. Cheese's Gameroom $2.50 - there are 4 on DS and I now have 2 (plus 3 on the Wii), yippe doo daa, considering I have never been to a Chuck E. Cheese but own 6 games! Oh, and the 2 Harvest Moon's bring me up to 4 of the HM games for DS, out of, I want to say 6 or 7.

Ben 10 Galacting Racing, $2.50, Alien Force, $2.50, and Ben 10 Triple Pack $5.00; Imagine, 2 more for $1.00 each, and SNK vs. Capcom Card Fighters DS for $5.00:

The last 3 Ace Attorney games I needed, each ~15/each, My Make-Up from O-Games, an obscure shovelware title for $2.50, Hello Kitty Daily for $5.00, and Diner Dash: Flo on the Go for $5.00:

Barbie Island Princess for $1.00, Mega Bloks: Diego for $8, a game that will actually get played with by my daughter who loves Diego and Mega Bloks; and lastly for $5, I got another copy of Fullmetal Alchemist: Trading Card Game. Why? Because this copy included a mint exlcusive card that I needed:

Monster Jam, $2.50, Lego Battles, $1.79, Nicktoons Attack of the Toybots, $2.50, Shrek Smash n Crash, $1.79, Golden Nugget, not sure how much I paid, maybe $5, and Guilty Gear, roughly $7:

Dupe pic of Diego; Rayman Raving Rabbids 2, approx. $5, Dragon Ball Origins 2 for $10, Rayman DS, $5, and Ridge Racer DS $2.50. Lastly, the impossible. a CIB copy of Izuna 1 from Atlus. This has to be a top 10 rarest on the DS. Why, I am not sure, but part 2 is much easier to find. I got this on eBay and did a BIN for a high amount as I have had a hard time finding a copy for sometime now.

Lastly, a picture of all the Professor Layton and Phoenix Wright games altogether! 5 Phoenix Wright's on DS, 4 Professor Layton for DS, 2 Professor Layton for 3DS, and the Phoenix vs. Professor game, makes 12 altogether!!!

The Final Fantasy Theatrhythm playable box was just a shelf talker for the game.  No copies ever came with this 'on' it or as part of a bundle for it.  They were at GameStops promoting the release of the game before it came out, then were taken off the shelves and tossed, or left there till they broke or were swiped.  It's possible they were in other stores as well, but I only ever saw them at GS and the pair I've got came from a GS store.
