Game not working right :(

I bought Super Mario Bros./Duck Hunt for the NES, but when I select Mario, I can't start the game. The Mario start menu will start up, and when I press start, it does nothing and the Mario "Demo" will initiate. I've cleaned the game with a q-tip and 50% isopropyl alcohol. What do I do???

Sounds more like a controller issue

  • The controller works fine. I just played Ninja Gaiden with it.
  • Did you actually have to use the start button in Gaiden though? I don't recall if that's required. If not, have you tried pushing start really hard? I have a few controllers that require extra pressing for start/select.
  • I tried converting SMB / DH to Famicom and I ran into the same weird issue. SMB wouldn't start, but DH would. Instead of NES-MHROM, I used HVC-GNROM which is the same mapper, just capable of a bit more PRG ROM.
  • Clean your controller board, also use 91% Iso or higher if possible.
  • Many NES games respond to the Player 2 Start and Select buttons as if they were the Player 1 buttons because the Japanese Famicom did not have Start and Select buttons for P2. Many others completely ignor P2 Start and Select. If the game select menu is one such program that responds to it and SMB is not, this is exactly how it would behave if you were somehow connected as P2. I can't test right now to see if that's the case for this particular title, but the game select menu was tacked on later and so it sounds plausible.

Are you using an NES Advantage? Could the ports reversed or the switch set on Player 2? Has the NES been taken apart? Could the port connections have been switched internally?

This has happened to so many of my snes controllers. Its a pain in the ass. Ill even pull em apart and clean them with no luck

  • Yes I do use the start button to pause the game.
  • I'm also having this problem with a regular Super Mario Bros. cart.
  • Have you ever taken the NES apart before?
  • I have never taken the NES apart, but I'm not sure if anyone else has. When I bought the NES, I bought MC Kids and had this problem.
  • Are you using a real controller? Do you have more then 1 to test?
