computer, windows 10

I need advice. I was all ready for Windows 10 until some issues came about. I've decided privacy isn't a huge concern. My computer visits the daily kitten a lot and Facebook has me registered as an air bender and most likely to be the one of my friends to get in trouble at a nursing home. No big deal. Yes I know the privacy issues are a little deeper.

My real issue is that I tweaked windows 7 to work like XP. i have a real taskbar. No pinned programs, open tiles for programs, a link bar that actually works etc.. Will Windows 10 piss me off?

  • I just got a new laptop on Friday and it has Windows 10. Its not much different than Windows 7. I personally wouldn't replace 7 with 10, as 7 is more like XP.
  • If you're looking for something more like XP, definitely keep Windows 7. Windows 10 is a new experience that you might enjoy, though. They're not too terribly different
  • I have found W10 to be full of customization; more so than any previous Windows and I've used them all since W3.1.

If privacy is a concern for you there are some helpful patches one can download with the help of reddit threads. Turns off all the stuff Microsoft does to phone home.

When I installed W10 for the first time I basically just sat there for an hour clicking on each menu and option; set things up how I like them. I would definitely recommend you do the same. My start menu is just letters with apps, there is zero metro interface I turned it all off, I've got all the widgets and toolbars turned off. If you like minimalism you can turn even more stuff off than W7. I skipped over W8 and waited for W10. I have cortana, xbox, skype and all the bloatware totally stripped from my OS.

It's really fast like noticibly quicker than W7 if you are running a good SSD. I find myself able to click around and multitask much better with W10. Everything just works all my programs and apps have functioned. I've heard some people have problems with W10 but in my experience 99.9% of issues people have with their computers are a problem between the keyboard and chair.

    Currently running i7 5820k @ 4.5ghz, asus x99 deluxe, corsair h100i, gskill 16gb ddr4-3000 ripjaws and an EVGA 780 ti sc
  • If you like Windows 7 at all, you'll probably find the new features and changed carry-overs to be irritating in Windows 10. Functions like Cortana, permanent automatic update and P2P update sharing require a lot of internet access too. As someone who uses Windows a lot, 10 offers no incentive to upgrade, other than the guarantee of being updated for the next 10 years. Some things in 10 can be changed to be more like 7, but you still get saddled with useless new features and crippled core functions.

There's a reason why Microsoft wants everyone to stop using Windows 7 and 8.1... (less control over users)
  • I find Windows 10 extremely customization. Plus, DX12, yo!
  • W7 differs a bit from W10 but you can customize it and disable services that you don't need.
  • i personally really like Windows 10. You could always try it out on a different computer or load it up a different hard drive to see if you like it. Or hell, use a virtual machine to test drive it.
  • Windows 10 is faster and has DirectX12. It was great loading up all my barely-playable Steam games and seeing they no longer had framerate stutter on the same computer. I had zero problems migrating over and didn't have to reinstall a thing.

You can customize nearly every facet of W10, have your old quick launch bar and task bar, but still get the advantages of being able to install actual apps (not just Widgets) and use touch screen functionality if you ever decide to get a touch screen monitor.

I didn't have to remove any of the bloatware these guys are talking about and it's still freakin' good. But then again, so is Windows 7. And then again-AGAIN, I'm one of the few people that actually liked Windows 8.1.
  • ive heard alot of mixed things about win10. i like it it sure beats the crap out of win 8 or 8.1. other than disabling all the microsoft spyware its a good os
