what kind of protection are you using?

curious as to what kind of protection people on here are using to keep their carts & boxes minty.

i have several hundred games i would like to protect...especially many boxed i want to keep the wear & tear down on.

currently i have most nes, snes & n64 in orig dust covers and/or ziplock bags to keep them clean.  i store most of my games and display just a few.

ive seen here and there different companies make custom bags & clear plastic boxes.  im trying to see where to get the best deal on large quantities.

1.  what are you currently using?

2.  what brands/company are you getting yours from?

3.  what quatlity differences and fitment?

4.  best prices you have found so far?

5.  do you store or display your games?

i recently found these protectors, not sure how long they have been out.  you can hang them on a hook or stand them up to display.  they do cost quite a bit more than others, but quality looks good.  has anyone used these?  i can see where game stores would use these.

  • I only collect loose NES and I use retroprotection.
  • BitBoxes from Stone Age Gamer all the way.
  • JimPoles' box protectors (NES, SNES) and cart protectors for the high-end SNES and NES stuff. Simple, cheap, and perfect.
  • I have tons of plastic clamshells for sale. PM me for info.
  • Clamshells for NES

sorry, old picture, there's more now...

the solid wall of blue is SNES, the multicolored ones are N64, im still debating what exactly to do with them

  • For the majority of my 300+ boxed nes game collection I use the regular flimsy box protectors they work just fine, for my rarest nes boxes i have bought acrylic cases for them which are spendy. for my semi rare to rare carts I use regular nintendo cartridge clamshells, and my 2 rarest and most expensive carts I bought acrylic cases for them. And the majority of my cart collection is organized on a custom shelf my dad and I built with no protection on them, I don't feel they need it, none of the carts are gonna get hurt and if they do they are all common and cheap. I also own a big box Gyromite and I bought an acrylic case for it.
  • UGCs for consoles, Euro style clear DS cases for hand held, and if they make them, box protectors for the boxes. Since I've been getting a lot of PC boxen, no box protectors fit a good portion of my stuff
  • Box protectors for...boxed games.

Plastic baggies for higher end cart games.
  • I use the following for my cart bases games:
    • UGCs - SNES, N64, Genesis, 32x, 2600, 5200, 7800, Jaguar Odyssey2, Fairchild
    • Shadowfox Custom Game Cases - NES
    • Shadowfox Game Boy Cases - GB, GBC, GBA
    • Original Sega, and Shadowfox Sega reproductions cases - Master System
    • Black DVD cases - PC Engine Hu cards
    • All others are in their original cases (DS, 3DS, Vita)

For disc bases systems, everything is in its origianl cases except for some of the following:
    • Blue DVD cases - Sega CD
    • Yellow DVD cases - Sega CD 32x
    • White DVD cases - Sega Saturn
    • Black DVD cases - Atari Jaguar CD
    • Black DVD cases - 3DO

I also use the clear box protectors for the small number of original boxes I own.  I'm typically not a CIB collector for cart bases games.
  • I mostly just have NES stuff, and use jimpoleshuk's protectors for boxes and carts. They do the job and kinda make boxes look better in my opinion. Haven't bought in a while but I'm pretty sure they're a decent price. He gives you more off using a certain code for NA members.
  • Box protectors for boxes

plastic cart protectors for high end carts (nes and snes)

    Sleeves for common nes games

protectors all from video game box protectors
  • Use Jimpole's box protectors for my boxes. I don't use protection for my carts, since I want to be able to insert them into the slot whenever the urge moves me.

Booklets go in Martha Stewarts recipe card binder sheets (4 per page).
  • none and just pray it doesnt fall off in the morning
  • I don't use protection.

  • ^^^^^^ I was waiting for someone to do that
  • I raw dog it. Games are facing bottom in on a shelf, dont think any dust can get in.
  • Another guy for Jimpole AKA videogameboxprotectors.com stuff over here.

    You beat me to it.

  • thanks for the recommendations guys...

also, if you have a link to any sites, please post them for those of us interested getting some.
  • I have just SNES loose carts, got about 100 so far. Everything is in dust covers, I have about half in the official dust covers and everything else in the ones Amazon sells. They don't fit as nicely and have a tendency to slide off games but for sitting there in my wall cabinet it's perfect. Search snes dust cover on Amazon they are $6.99 USD for a pack of 6.
  • I use 2 mil poly bags from uline and box protectors from jimpoleshuks site.
  • I also use jimpoleshuk's stuff, except for a few vga cases I have.
  • I've had a hard time deciding on these options for some of my game sets. I've been really happy with Jim's box protectors for NES/SNES/N64/GB/GBA games. I have my SNES carts in UGCs and my 64 carts loose in a couple of plastic boxes currently; I have a few of the rarer/expensive games in OEM N64 clamshell cases. I'd love to case all my N64 games in the OEM clamshells, but I only have like 7, they're expensive to grab online, and I'm going for the full set, so...we'll see how that goes. I've also been trying to think outside the box with my storage options: for example, building a tiered tabletop shelving unit for my 64 games, so I can see the labels.

I've been mulling grabbing Jim's individual cart protectors or clamshells of some sort for my loose NES. Not sure what to do, and it's not a high priority at the moment. Most of my carts are cheaper, and they're fine on the shelf for now.
  • I've been looking to invest in clamshell cases for my loose carts for some time now. Problem being that I have almost 500+ games and a bookshelf to fit everything on. And seeing how now I had to start moving my 3ds games where I have all my consoles displayed along with my CIBs and two empty display boxes filled with manuals my game room is starting to become somewhat of its very own ecosystem. The mess is starting to drive the wife closer to insanity so at some point I should maybe, possibly, in the future consider buying another bookshelf so I can start putting my carts in protectors.

God damn that's a ton of clamshells! Where the hell did you get them all lol?

I use clamshells on my more liked games for the NES...Zelda, FF...so on and so forth. Everything else gets a dust sleeve if I have one.

SNES games get those dust covers...I don't have a ton of them so only the best games get them. No clamshells for them yet...never seen them in the wild.

N64 games are actually in N64 drawers: https://images-na.ssl-images-amazon.com/images/I/31tc-OTRNmL._SL256_.jpg

I got two of those drawers and they're stacked on top of eachother. But my collection is more then what those two can hold...so the rest are just sitting out. I have a single N64 clamshell...and it's protecting my only NFR game that I own...Mario Party 3 lol.

The few boxes I do own are kept in the corner on a special shelf just for CIB games. It's also the darkest corner of my room...no sunlight gets in there so it's the best I can do for it. I think one of my boxes has one of those plastic protective box on it...I forget which one. The rest are just sitting out on that shelf.

  • if i get some of these protectors, i'll prob sell off my dust sleeves and clam shells...
  • so im ordering a few different brands to see the differences between them.

    any others?
  • None. Dust Sleeves are enough

The only game I bought a box protector for is my CIB Myriad 6-in-1 since I do NOT want to damage this one
  • Good ol dust covers. Except I'm down about 80 lol

I love Jim's box protectors as well
  • Here's what I've been working on a bit last two days:

Great way to store games, not too expensive (Like $1.50ish/cast including ink/paper), and lets you customize your collection so it's YOUR collection.
