R.O.B. repair

I bought a ROB online and when I opened him up this morning all his contacts have alkaline crystals and corrosion. I don't want to return him because he a good deal with all the gyromite parts (the spinner is also corroded though) He looks undamaged otherwise and I'd like to play my Gyromite and Stack Up if I can get him working. One of the contacts looks unrepairable to me though and I'd like some input on what I can do.

  • Good luck with this. Vinegar supposedly cleans off corrosion, but I have never been able to test this.

I am sure someone will come up with a method!

Try looking there I am sure there is a bunch of options to go with.......in this case I wouldn't care to much for having original parts if you just want a working ROB find some connectors and mount them inside with glue......for that last picture anyway I am sure that the other pieces are still restorable.

I would be taking the entire bottom of ROB apart to check for any other corrosion as well.

  • steelwool on a q tip will help
  • While I'm unsure of exactly how a ROB is put together, you will definitely want to take it apart to make sure the corrosion hasn't spread into the boards. If it has it will be very hard to fix.

If not just replace those contacts and you're good to go.
  • I usually take a Q-Tip dipped in rubbing alcohol and wet the corrosion and pick up what I can with the Q-Tip then anything that is still there I gently scrape away with a small screwdriver. Repeat this until it's all gone. You'll need like 10 Q-Tips. It works like 75% of the time.
  • In the past, I have used emery cloth on battery contacts and have had much success. Don't want to rub too hard but apply the vinegar and scrub the corrosion right off. Only use this on the battery contact points though. Not really going to recommend this be used on other parts of the R.O.B but it should help make a good contact.
  • Here's an old trick, put the contacts in a container with baking soda and vinegar then slosh it around for a minute and let it sit in it, you need both to really reverse it. Clean up with a slosh of isopropyl 97%
